For anyone wondering what this song is about: Basically I think it’s an ego story with her perspective and his perspective, like a complete misunderstanding. That’s why it’s so confusing and I think that’s the point. She’s talking about how she was everything that anyone could ask for, but the person didn’t see her worth because materialistically, she was nothing to him. But now as soon as she’s big, he all of a sudden wants her. So she says she was only dtf and didn’t expect anything other than that because he didn’t deserve anything more from her in retrospect. That’s why she says back when I took off, I’m a trophy, back when I wasn’t nothing, you was a trophy (you thought you were everything and you were to me). BUT the twist is that this was HER lens and side of it. The guy she’s talking about (partynextdoor) tells his side by saying she used to want a guy who used to try and shoot his shot, but now goes for someone who amounts to what she does because she feels that that’s who she needs to be with after having the experience she had; at her level. That’s why he said she let everything in her chest (what she felt but never said) go to her head (ego and assumption). He said that he’s not caught up, it’s what she thinks. But he thinks that she’s caught up lmao. When she left he realized he lost his chance with her because he didn’t have the courage to tell her... but she didn’t have the courage to tell him either lolll. They both just SAY they were just trying to f*ck, but they both have genuine love and affection for each other that they both just try to bury and hide. Just a pride thing because of fear of rejection. They both know they can’t deny or shake it. He even admits that when the Patron hits he starts to forget, so he’s literally saying that he needs to drink to forget about losing her and his guilt from letting it happen. They’re both just coming from a place of ego and assumption with too much pride to communicate how they feel and have felt to each other. They both say I don’t think you know, I still want what I’ve wanted lol. Never got anywhere because of assumptions on both ends. She thought he didn't want her because he was superficial and shallow, and he thought she just wasn't into him back then, and then changed and became superficial and shallow after fame, but really they both wanted the same thing (something real and genuinely liked each other) but just didn't approach each other. The message of the song is trying to show us how we’re just mirror reflections of exactly what others do to us back to them, and how we literally screw ourselves and what we could have had over by not communicating, which is very important to shed light on. It’s the reason behind so many relationship problems and fails. People could literally be together but they playin too much. I do know party may have written about kehlani, so it may just be his story with her and it parallels with a similar experience Summer had or she's just singing what could be kehlani's point of view...
