S1-S042 Christina couldn’t stop shaking her head. This was incredible. “How long have you known this, Kathe?” “I have always known what I am, Christina. As I grow older, the sea and the siren pod calls to me. They might know where I am, but cannot get to me. Every time we go out in the boat, I am in possible danger of being recaptured and forced to rejoin my group. I want to stay here. I love all of you so much it hurts.” Lauren asked, “Wouldn’t you be happier with other mermaids, Kathe?” “Sirens can be horrible creatures, Lauren. I will share some of my memories with you. Some of these memories go back many hundreds of years. I remember…everything, Lauren.” Katherine now held a captivated audience. No one wanted to know, but had to hear. “The sirens run in pod groups, not alone like in some of the myths. The males have a short life span. After breeding, they guard the eggs in the nests. “When the babies hatch, they attack and eat the males. Baby sirens have sharp teeth. We rip the males apart and eat them alive. “There is no shrill sound from their screams because the nests are underwater. But there is a powerful sonar emission that drives all of the other fish away for miles. “Even the sharks leave the area in a hurry. Nothing is more terrifying to the creatures of the sea than hungry, baby sirens.” Mouths hung open at Katherine’s last revelation. Even sharks ran?! “I was separated from the group by two things…a horrific storm above and a porpoise below. I had fed already, so I simply grabbed onto the porpoise and let it take me for a ride. It was very exhilarating! “This guy moved faster than any baby siren could, so I was literally free! He took me to the beach, but seemed to give me, a sad look good-bye. That porpoise was my first friend in the world. “I wish that I could find him and thank him for what he did for me.” The story of Katherine’s escape from her pod actually started bringing tears. Their sister was a refugee from her true home…the sea. Benny got up to get some coffee for the group. Benny Junior followed him. Amy and Dovatto exchanged glanced, but remained silent. Dani went to Katherine and held her. Lisa, Lauren and Christina weren’t far behind. This was more than a secret. It was an emotional moment of release for everyone in the Ram-i-rolli family. After a quiet, midnight coffee break, Katherine said, “Now, I will tell you why I will never go back to the sea…ever.” With a big gulp of coffee, Katherine started recanting her numerous memories of the past…the pod’s past, not hers. “The siren group would gather on a group of rocks that were just below the ocean’s surface. That way, the sailors couldn’t see the rocks. The mermaids started using a group sonar wail that caught the ship’s crew’s attention. “As the ship approaches, the group slowly withdraws, further luring the ship into the rocks, where it crashes. Then the sirens attack as a group and kill all of the men, floundering in the water. Sharks come from miles away and clean up our murder scene.
