Summerland: A 2003 tour of the building (Part 4)

A tour around the Summerland complex in December 2003, not long before it was demolished.
This fourth of four parts has Charles Guard interviewing Brian Murray, Assistant General Manager, in the basement of the building, speaking about various things including the fire of 1973 and some of his meetings with people it effected.
This short film was created from historical video material captured by Culture Vannin as a part of our ongoing work to document the changing face of the Isle of Man.

This building looked older than it was if anything. By 2003 it was way behind facilities wise and due to the horrendous past it had demolition was the right option. I know there is now a memorial outside for the victims and i hope on the 50th anniversary there will be a commemorative event to mark this; this disaster should never be forgotten. 😢

I visited Summerland with a travel writer before it burnt down. My friend asked our host why we didn't build things like this in England. He said that the fire regulations wouldn't allow it.

Most materials burn in the presence of an oxidizing agent if the temperature is high enough. Including steel and aluminium.
