I literally wrestled a huge Sansevieria (Dracaena) Zeylanica from my dantist's office. They had 3 huge tightly stuffed plants and all were drastically overwatered. They gave me one. When I took it out of the pot - what I saw in that liquid dirt (I cannot even call it soil) - I don't even want to describe. Anyway - I cleaned the roots, cut the damaged ones, dried them a bit and repotted in 3 different pots with a proper soil mixture. It is such a delight to see now 3 nice plants on my staircase... To me - it is like saving kittens...💚🐈⬛💚

When she was talking about over watering I sighed and looked at my snake plant. I've had her for two years and she's about 1/4 of her original size, mostly due to rot. I've gotten it down now though, she seems a lot happier and is simultaneously pushing out three new stocks! Can't wait for her to be full again. I named her Jane Fonda after the movie Monster in Law 🤭

I too was an over and sometimes under waterer. I bought a moisture probe from Kmart-yeah, I’ve had it awhile-and it has saved a lot of plants lives. Look into one. They’re around under $20 and return the price in saved plants.

I had a snake plant planted in a plastic container with very little drain holes and with a regular potting mix with extra pieces of bark. It survived for about 3 months but I just had to amend the soil. I added sand to the soil and drilled more holes on the pot. But, even thought it wasn’t in the best conditions, it’s still grew a little bit because it was outside.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture did research and development of Sansevieria as a fiber source during and after WW2 in south Florida. Fiber was a possible national security concern as much of the natural fiber used in the U.S. at that time was imported. Imports could be curtailed during wartime. Due to the post war advent of synthetic fibers , the program was scrapped . Some of the species and varieties utilized in the program have entered into the nursery trade’s propagation and hybridization efforts.
@summerrayneoakes3 жыл бұрын
Do you recall which species they were studying? Would be marvelous to find those studies. :)
@Nhoj31neirbo473 жыл бұрын
@@summerrayneoakes - Many of the plants used were not formally described species and were simply assigned reference numbers . I did find some literature stating that the following species were evaluated for fiber production.....Sansevieria guineensis, S. ehrenbergii, S. cylindrica, S. longiflora, S. thysiflora aka S. hyacinthoides, S. trifasciata, S. trifasciata ‘Laurentii’. The last two being found the most promising. ~ Sites I located were; journals.flvc.org, (title search) Sansevieria in Florida- Past and Present. This explains that the research was conducted by the USDA and researchers from the University of Florida Everglades Experiment Station, at locations in Boynton and Indiantown, Fl.. ~ specialcollections.nal.usda.gov list the titles of many reports on Sansevieria research but doesn’t seem to have the reports themselves digitalized. For example, 300-ef Sansevieria- Florida Project 1942 - 1945. ~ Research was also conducted in Hawaii. I know that some of the remnant plants at research plots in Hawaii were later collected and introduced into the ornamental trade. ~ I could email you some of the more interesting stuff that I found, but I’m not sure where to send it.

Here in San Diego, and California in general, these are a staple landscaping, indoor & outdoor plant, in corporate, public & private gardens. At my house, and at my family’s, we have literal “hedgerows” of them. Lol, more like shaded front yard border beds of _laurentii_ & _trifasciata_ …the shape is almost picket fence-like. Then we have like five larger potted specimens (in 3 ft tall pots) of _xylanica_ & _cylindrica_ that are all the height of an average person, easily. I love them. And they bloom yearly! We actually have so many that we can experiment with diff microclimates around the property. Some of our snake plants get pretty hot sun, all day. Mostly the large laurentiis & trifasciatas. But they can become chlorotic. They’re also just as sensitive to tap water as spider plants & some other related genera. Some get sun in the morning or afternoon only; some are in full or bright shade, like ‘Fernwood’, ‘Fernwood Mikado’, ‘Black Gold’, as well as a few bird’s nests, ‘Golden Hahnii’ & ‘Moonshine’ pots. Those I can’t wait to see grow taller. Love the teal blue.
