I think many houseplant enthusiasts can lament the fact that there just isn't 'enough space' in their homes for the bigness of their plant love. Well, Mauritian-born James Ipy, who now lives in Singapore, has found a way to create quite an indoor-outdoor oasis on his small apartment balcony.
Enjoy this FIRST installment of Plant One On Me's "Houseplant Home Tours"! And if you have a home that you'd like to suggest for a future Houseplant Home Tour, then fill out the form below. We may very well just come for a visit: bit.ly/2T7tW1q.

Yeah true, imagine every free space.. walls/roofs etc in the cities built up with plants, I bet if everyone did that there would be less health problems and even climate problems a thing of the past and more biodiversity too. Plants regulate everything...

@@silverhairdemon **sigh** Athens could be such a beautiful city, if we did that... oh well, maybe one day? People seem to be more interested in plants nowadays (myself included, even though I've already gone crazy), I hope it's a more permanent "trend" and we can make a difference.

@@valiumk.9489 Yes indeed I too am crazy with the plant virus, building my house full with plants. and to be honest on the heavy note I think its the only true way to save the human species from themselves, by blending their abstract structures into mother nature so we can all live in a more equilibrium state. Imagine more plants, more insects, more birds, more bee's, more fresh air, more colors, more happiness, more health, more stable weather....etc...etc...

When you get in this "home planting stuff" you realise that you need to know the Latin names of them, to know their necessities, how to grow, how not to kill them. Is it possible to be a plant owner without knowing the scientific names? Probably, it is. But the chance of you get lose A LOT of plants is really HUGE. The best thing to do is to learn their names, go to the internet make some research and even to buy books. So, when you notice it, you are going to to speak their names so naturally that seems you are talking about kids' and niece's names. Belive me.

Once you get interested in plants it happens almost automatically. All 80+ plants I have I know the names of, and that's not even 1/10th of the names I know. To be fair, I'm also studying biology so that helps.

@Hilarycar
@Hilarycar 4 жыл бұрын
@@marypolk9820 sure thing. Check out hd_cardozo on Instagram for images of my balcony pond and other house plants. I'll also make a video of it real soon. Long read alert! But till then, here is how I usually go about with it. I look for a nice sun lit spot where there is direct morning sunlight for a few hours, at least till about 11 am. Cause the lotus flower blooms daily from 9.45 to about 2.30 or 3. Next I set up any box or tub or bucket that is waterproof and can hold water without leakage. I prefer to avoid plastic though cause it heats up quite a bit. Glass tanks or cement tanks or styrofoam containers work best. I've found that they need to have a minimum depth of about 10 inches. I then drill holes in the seeds of the lotus plant that I buy online and keep them in a bowl of water for about 3 to 4 days till the seed germinates. In the meantime I fill the container with clay-like mud. And fill it with water. Once the dirt has settled, I gently suction out the water without disturbing the mud at the bottom. I do this once every day till the water stays clear. Next I drop the germinated seeds in the pond and just leave them alone. I introduce fish only once the plant is string and healthy enough.

The difference though is that I am in Sacramento where the afternoon temps can reach 110° Farenheit and it is very dry. I've only been successful with succulents, a few herbs, and a tomato plant. Beautiful. I finally draped my pathos over my kitchen windows and replanted it and my spider plant. Now, I totally want more plants. I ordered a string of pearls and a eucalyptus.

It took several years to grow so many. You can certainly start small and increase gradually at your own pace 😊

Haley Costner you can really regrow everything...food scraps like onions carrots herbs...even plants you find in your war. You can put them in like refurnished old glass jars with water so they develop roots and then plant them in soil :)

I've been seeing the possibility of small spaces for living, and in this case, in growing such a massive collection of so many varieties of healthy plants! Awesome watching this for the second time, but the passion he has is inspiring to do more with my own space!

@@jamesip2947 I love the little ecosystem(s) there!!...above the small pond, to the not so humid! I need to grow my papyrus which is now outdoors in a pot with small drainage, into more wet soil (our Los Angeles climate can't keep up with the humidity requirement).....So many tips in the video! All your plants are so lively!

@@pattin4015 thanks Patti. Glad you appreciated those little tips 😊. Your papyrus would probably do just great in a pot without drainage - a mini pond of sorts .
