80's were the best years of my life. The summers were so long and beautiful, all the colors were neon, the music was the best ever, even today people mostly listen to the 80's hits. The ocean smelled so good and everybody was cool. It was a much simpler and epic time than these days.

Proud 80s kid here! No one understands how awesome the 80s were unless you were a kid back then. It was a very special era, and I feel so sorry for the kids of today; they have no idea how amazing music, movies, fashion, and just how wonderful it was back then. Just hanging out at the mall and arcade was like Disney World. I miss those days.🥰 Oh, and I can't forget Michael Jackson ruled back then. No matter where you went, you would hear or see someone wearing MJ. The malls were almost completely decorated in MJ. I remember the complete upstairs of Sears was nothing but MJ merch. They even had The Making Of Thriller playing on loop. I was lucky to look like Michael, even dressed like him. It gave me a huge advantage when it came to the girls. They absolutely adored me. 🥰

The 1990s and Early to Mid 2000s (before 2007) were the last times anyone wanted to go outside and have fun. But once the smartphones came around no one ever wanted to go outside and by the 2010s pretty much outside was just not as fun anymore as the 1950s - 2000s once did. Thankfully we have videos like these to remind us of a time when it was simpler and not so chaotic as it is nowadays.

New Yorker here. Up in Washington Heights in the early to mid-80s, we had Barb-b-que'd hot dogs and burgers, DJ's playing all kinds of music, hanging off the traffic lights and then sitting up on top and we even had these HUGE rented trucks come over with ladders leading up to a pool on top. No violence, no danger, just lots of fun and hanging out with your neighbors til sundown. Can't do those anymore. Us Gen-X kids had the best childhoods. I wouldn't trade mine for anything, certainly not with today's kids.

As someone who was born in ‘00, it’s because there was no where to go. The mall in my small rural hometown was dying and if you spent too long anywhere, someone would come up and accuse you of loitering/causing trouble. Fortunately nowadays, there is a local game/comic store and coffee shop that kids can hang out in but that doesn’t negate how hard it is to travel safetly with such wide urban scroll/large trucks that can see someone on a back.

Except for a few minor differences, mostly due to changing technology, the summers of the 80s kids were just like the summers of the 70s that I experienced as a kid. Back then, we would show up at school (during the school year), and instead of going to class we'd ditch school and go to the mall, watch movies, go to the arcade, get food at the food court. I was born at the absolute perfect time to be an '80s kid. I was 7 when the decade started and 17 when it ended. I remember doing most things on here. I couldn't help but remember that ALL my favorite memories from then occurred when I was outside!!! As with most kids then, we ran the streets. Whether it was going to the local pool, playing football, soccer, or baseball. We was always on the move. The only time we was indoors was when someone had a basement party. Now, kids need to be dragged outside. It's like they can't miss a moment away from their games or phones. And while we probably lived a more dangerous life, I think the fact that we were experiencing more socially, and on person, we made lifelong memories. Today's youth only have the repetition of doing the same exact thing daily. I just can't help but feel their missing out on life.

@Rhetty for History I couldn't agree more. Having the whole world at your fingertips has made kids less interested in going out and exploring the world first hand. While the internet has made it easier to communicate, it's made it harder for kids, cause if your talking to people from just say England, I think it takes away from the fascination of actual going there and experiencing it in person. I can't help but feel sorry for them, knowing just how much they're missing out on.

Camping was a great way to make new friends with peers from all over the country, as most campsites had animation teams. There was an abundance of on-site activities that suited every age category. I'd drop by unannounced to friends' houses. Often on a regular daily basis. Did the playground thing, steel equipment, and all. Did that merry-go-round thing you described. I'd swing on the swing set, and get as high up as I could. Like almost high enough to go over the top when I was in reverse. Then, when I'd reach the same height going forward, I'd jump off at the apex. It was only grass, lol! Hella fun! Biked helmetless on long journeys around town. No water bottle, of course. Drank from the hose. Fished with my family. Tried The Moonwalk. Ran through sprinklers. Made mixtapes from my cassettes or 45's. Recorded off the radio with the cassette player. Collected magazines and cut out pictures to hang up. Spent time with my grandparents, but they lived a few houses down from us. Watched soaps with my mom and sister. Went on family vacays. Ate Lucky Charms. Played Pac Man. Held sleep-overs, and attended them. My Mom, sister and I went to the skating rink every weekend at one point. Rented videos very often. Plenty horror! School shopped with Mom.
