hi Ian, I'm learning the tenor sax for a few years now, love listening to you improvising on the tenor and also the clarinet. I am 70, hopefully enough time left to come close to be playing by ear and improvise. Cheers, Gary

Great to hear from you Mary. If you put the time and effort in, it will happen. Motivation is the key.

Beautiful. I've improvised on this song a lot vocally but now I want to try it on clarinet.

Nice improvisation! Enjoyed it immensely. Creative and ‘well spoken’, .........so to speak. I too am 70 and have returned to clarinet after almost 50 years. I’m spending many hours per day practicing, loving my instrument and working on my improvisation. It’s coming along and I can notice improvement. Your advice to Mary is sage. Somebody way smarter than me ( which includes a colossal number of people....) said that 80% of success is just showing up. Perhaps. But when you do show up, be motivated, spend the time make the effort. Time, effort and motivation. Key ingredients. It appears you’re playing an Albert System. Great sound. Edmond Hall, Barney Bigard.........and now Ian Boyter! I was playing my Selmer RI that my father bought in 1931 or 32. But the Selmer is getting tired, so I’ve purchased a LeBlanc Rapsodie. Not a high end instrument, but plays extremely well.

Hi Lauirie, I'm just preparing the old Borgani Albert for a gig in the Edinburgh Jazz & Jive Club Club tonight. Wetting the reed. I don't play clarinet often enough nowadays. Keep on blowin'

Dear Ian. Your videos are really inspiring. I play hungarian folk music on clarinet and folk flute, but I'm interested in jazz and other styles. I have a 60-year-old Gottsmann clarinet with german system. Greetings from Hungary. 😉👋🇭🇺

Wow! an Albert system clarinet. Try a boehm system its a ball breaker. Albert is like playing a saxophone. Jimmy Dorsey played this kind of clarinet and played the heck out of it, one of the best .This cat sounds real good and has a lot of soul!
@mrjimmienoone2130 Жыл бұрын
You need a Boehm to play Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw songs, e.g.. But for these old-timey things nothing is better than an Albert. Unfortunately, I can't get an affordable one here in Switzerland.

I don't know, those Albert System clarinets, I would not be seen dead with one, but I'm pleased to say I'm still alive and playing and have four I play regularly, a Bb, an A. an Eb and a C. The Bb and the A are a matched pair made by E.J Albert, lovely playing.

Hi Ian the composer of that number came from Ukraine he started music rather late I think at the age of 12 alot of eastern Europeans music have become jazz hits ,tango when new immigrants arrived in the USA they brought with them their lost tunes.
@IanBoyterJazzsax5 жыл бұрын
Hi Roman, I thought that George Gershwin was the composer of Summertime. Born in New York. He certainly gets composer's credit for it. But do you know something else?
@romanchomenko29125 жыл бұрын
@@IanBoyterJazzsax This is not related to jazz Bob Dylan parents also came from Ukraine in fact 30 percent of American Jews actually originated from Ukraine. Hollywood director Spielberg also parents came from Ukraine .
