I drove a 1998 15 Passenger van for our church many times filled with primarily either kids or teens. I had no special license or anything. I simply looked at the vehicle and concluded without even really thinking about it that it can't be driven like a sports car. I mean Duh!! I quickly got a feel for the van and simply didn't dare take any unnecessary maneuvers with it. Slow down, take your time and be careful with them and you'll be fine. Keep your passengers safe. If you have to swerve that quickly out of the way as in the video then your not being vigilant enough as a driver or keeping a good stopping distance. You can avoid most of those sudden situations if you remain vigilant and always consider the worst thing that could possibly happen under any given driving situation.

Mr. Extreme -Agreed. I drove one of these on a college trip to DC when one of the teachers got sick and couldn't attend. Frankly the initial thought of driving something this big scared me. It wouldn't brake as fast as my car, certainly wouldn't corner in a pinch. I realized that the only way I could handle this massive vehicle was to SLOW THE HECK DOWN AND GIVE PROPER BRAKING DISTANCE. Fortunately, no college students were harmed in the making of this post.

+Mr. Extreme Totally agreed loaded van / suv / truck is not a sedan it could weight 4+ tons and should not be driven as sport car. Each person is about 100 kilograms so 15 people make 1500kg = ~1.5 tons with seats and their luggage load could be about ~2+ tons to the car that already weight ~2 tons = 4+ tons total weight. This suspension they offer does not chance center of gravity either, so i'd like to know what it does exactly however, this video gives no clue on how this "roadmaster" suspension operates what it actually does versus standard one. Could be marketing trick like in "as seen on tv" they put something higher in the van to raise center of gravity and make to make video without it look worse, at best it adds 10% improvement.

The problem doesn't present itself in everyday driving. It becomes a problem when taking evasive maneuvers to avoid a crash. If you've ever had an old woman look you in the eye from a dead stop in a parking lot pull directly in front of you, it's comforting to know you can go to the left and right again without going rubber side up. Especially when hitting that old woman in the door handle is sure to kill her.

And if you get into a situation where you think your going to crash into the vehicle or whatever but front of you. Don't swerve. Just stop to the best of the vehicles ability and take it head on. It's alot less likely you will die in a head on collision in one of these as opposed to a high speed rollover. And just saying swerving to avoid stuff is a bad idea anyway. You could easily hit another car driving to the side of you and cause another accident or into head on traffic, which in smaller cars is worse for you. For an example if someone fly's in front of you and brake checks you, don't swerve into the other lane to get hit and be at fault for a different accidents. Run straight into that asshole who wants you to crash. A dashcam is a good idea to prove you weren't at fault. Or say someone hair darts into your lane and your space. Don't freak out and tank your wheel around, let that idiot pit themselves on you or hit the side of your car. Keep your car stable. Don't let's some asshat push you around to the point that you cause a crash with another person. Now if there's a semi truck at a dead stop.. yeah swerve you might die but you should see a semi stopped up ahead

My parents had a 15 passenger Dodge Maxivan back in 1980, it was a 1977 and was 3 years old when they bought it. My parents never once had any problems driving it because my parents are both great drivers and were careful driving that big van.

Even if it means a frontal collision.( Dashcam would help with the confidence to prove you we're not at fault) really swerving isn't q good thing no matter what kind of car your driving. Especially if it means swerving into an opposing lane of traffic. Seen so many videos of people swerving to avoid a brake check or another accident and run head on into another car or into the wall, essentially screwing themselves and putting them at fault for a separate accident

I'll tell you what these vans REALLY need. Sure these may be useful. But with Airbags all inside (side curitain of course) , A really strong roll cage, pillars, etc, and Roll stability control can really maximize the safety. And even have an extended axle ratio as well to great reduce rollover. But if it does, bam. Strong rollover cage, and good side curtain airbags all inside to protect the passengers.

First thing to do tomorrow morning: Go out to the van with a good tire pressure gauge, and check the pressures cold, before you even turn on the engine. Next, purchase the heaviest duty compact tire inflator pump you can find, one that can be plugged into the cigarette lighter or 12V accessory outlet. Pump up those tires, and set them as close as possible to the pressures specified on the drivers or whichever door pillar that sticker is affixed to. Get used to how the van handles with those pressures, and then how it feels at at least half occupancy, with at least half a tank of gas in it. Keep that pump somewhere in the van, so it's there when you need it. I'm sure there's a cubby hole or space under the seats where it can be stowed. Typical large van cold tire pressures range from 50-55psi up front, and 75-80psi in back. But: CHECK THE DOOR PILLAR PLACARD or owners manual for the pressures specific to your van, and maintain those pressures at least monthly, year-round. Getting the tires right is the single biggest step to van safetly, that, and just slowing down a little, even 5mph here and there.

Im sorry but this is a case of poor driver skill. Most of these vans (the Dodge being discontinued) now have Stability control. The Ford is being replaced with a new European design. Regardless, extra driver skill is required to drive these vehicles whether they are filled or not. Most people do not posses an understanding of vehicle dynamics to operate these safely. Normally these kind of vehicles will understeer. Snap oversteer can occur when they are loaded with passengers. Proper loading of these vehicles is also a key factor in its stability which nobody seems to know. Suspension upgrades are good and all but its still the driver that controls the vehicle. Think of the older Ford Explorers. They roll over when a tire is blown...that was proven to be inaccurate. It was driver error in regaining control that caused the roll over. Please leave the driving of large vehicles to us who know how to drive them.

chance greer I drive an e350 work van, the shorter body style, I also feel more comfortable in tis than I do in regular cars. I can see so much more in front of me because of how high up I am, it is windowless in the back and has a wall between front and back, so rear visibility is limited to what I can see out of my window, but because of this the mirrors are designed to let me see everything behind and to the side of me, shirt of a car being literally right on my ass. But they aren't my concern lol

Second, the 52MPH test, pause @ 4:39 - the driver has already begun the countersteer before the rear end has broke loose - this throws the center of gravity rearward, inducing oversteer / unstable condition. Now, pause @ 5:00 -the driver eases into the turn, keeping weight transfer minimal and sets himself up for the next turn. 5:02 - he waits for the body roll to stabilize before turning the wheels, creating a predicatable smooth flowing curve. We have a 2004 Chevy Express 3500. It's a LOT more stable than people think. I can't speak for the others. I've driven it with 2300 lbs in it, and it was totally stable. Not to mention, the brakes are HUGE.

*LET ME SHARE THE AFFORDABLE DIY FIXES - EQUIPMENT ADDITIONS I CHOSE AFTER RESEARCHING TO SOLVE THIS ROLL OVER CONCERN ON MY VAN ONCE AND FORALL!: I own a very affordable and reliable proven low mileage older 96 Ford 15 pass van window van and safety is a high concern, the riders in my vehicle are my responsibility and must wear seat belts of course, so after much research into this subject I found: Firstly yes all high profile vehicles such as SUV’s roll over easier than cars, in fact a co worker rolled her suv getting the tire caught in a rural road ditch that borders the road but these vans might be worse than most SUV’s so: These older vans weren’t taken as far as they should have been in design and accessories for roll over safety avoidance, there is too much of a danger, but just like many products these days we have to “finish the work ourselves, spend the extra money ourselves to make it more right” and there are affordable products that can help a good amount together make the vehicle a bit more safer from roll over chance from happening. Ford for instance, sold hundreds of thousands of these extended vans and said these vans are safe enough. I would say, what they said in between their words is that these vans could be a bit safer with some affordable additions but we don’t want to admit any more and then have to pay for safety additions for all the hundred of thousands on the road would cost us a fortune. First yes there are some great must watch videos on best loading methods and tire and pressures and speed decisions so I won’t go into that here. Yes the rear tires require much higher pressures(80 psi) and if you think they should hold the same as car tires pressures(35psi) is used these tires will not support the van and it’s cargo’s heavy weight and will over heat and fail. Yes of course if your van doesn’t already have any of these, don’t do it: don’t lift your van, don’t add 4 wheel drive(often a narrower front axle is installed), don’t add the very top heavy fiberglass high roof pop ups. Because these all could help the van roll over some day during a blow out or emergency maneuver at highway speeds. Of course if you don’t load the van heavy with all 15 people, each reduction of high center of gravity seated person, this in itself can make the vehicle much less likely to roll. I want to be able to carry 11 people with my seats arranged into a c shaped lounge seating party van and any chance of rolling over would really Kill any party as they say. *So I did these affordable things to bring the van into a safer zone: Looking at the videos we can see a great part of the main causes of rolling is the van leans-sways too much to the side to side encouraging rolling, especially in the rear and the heavy rear causes the rear to whip around. So these 2 items can be much improved by: 1. Replaced all the original shock absorbers with Monroe’s best for this van AND for the rear shocks I got their shocks that have helper springs that don’t effect the soft ride but do give extra spring assist as soon as heavy loads are in the van rear! Monroe has never let me down in price or quality and the often original van shocks need replacing anyways, you’ll notice the difference, I’d consider replacing them on any used car I bought. 2. Buy an affordable rear anti sway bar kit for the rear axle if your van probably doesn’t have this from the factory, very affordable on eBay! I chose these instead of the product this video is promoting because they never talked about these already existing products that are easy to install. Considering adding an after market tire pressure monitoring system! Also do free common sense things not mentioned at all in other video discussions: I used a paint pen and wrote in the fender behind the tire the proper tire pressure for anyone to see while bending down to fill the tire. Added labels at the top of the windshield to remind me to drive more carefully because of roll over concerns in a van and to check the tire pressures etc If you ever tow, add labels to remind of the towing speed limit law in your state and a bumper sticker to the tow vehicle to educate frustrated drivers why you are moving slower! Add a calendar reminder in your smart phone to replace the tires on the date they are over 6 and Definitely over 10 years old no matter how much tread is left! Another consideration but with pros and cons to weigh.. Measure the width from one tire tread beginning to the opposite side, tire tread beginning. Do this for both front and rear axles and compare. If you find your van design is much narrower standing in the rear between tires, some are as much as 8” total: Then consider buying either new rear tire rims with more of an offset to adjust fix this or also consider buying good quality rear wheel spacers that push the rear tires out to give a wider stand and reduce over steering(rear does not respond to turning as strongly as the front).. A few companies make spacers just for this roll over safety concern but spacers can fail and if they do you can be left with no rim to support the vehicle’s standing. Discuss this with your tire and wheel stores and you can discuss it in rv forums where they make such tough decisions because expensive rv’s often have driving and sway problems when new because the makers don’t care enough about compensating for all the weight and extensions they’ve added to the vehicle’s chassis. - Additionally, if you want to look at what you can easily be done to keep everyone safe if it ever does roll, the roof does not have enough cross members to always hold their position and the walls positions which effects the walls standing in a roll over and the pillars are hallow sheet metal. For these reasons the walls of the van sometimes caves in more than it should in a severe roll over and the windows break and people can be crushed a bit by the roof or fall out the now open windows. During a headliner fabric foam change, I went to the salvage yard and removed 6 cross member roof light weight metal channeled beams using a flat blade and hammer to bread the adhesive or use heat. Sawzall the bolt hole ends off and fit spaced between the existing roof beams, tucking the ends in the pockets above the walls top edge. This might not be an easy thing depending on your van design. Drill screw or rivet the ends to the wall top lip. Caulk to bridge any gaps with the sheet metal roof and the new members. This also made the roof much much stronger with hardly any flexing to where I can walk on it if needed while loading unloading bikes from the rain gutter roof racks. I also sprayed yellow foam can into some of the hallow wall members and horizontal members to give them more strength from collapsing inward in a roll over. I also insulated the van more using used poly fill loose and batts acquired for free from discarded sofas stuffing anywhere I could. This can also reduce the sun heat on the headliner foam so it lasts longer. That made a big difference with comfort and quietness and the sound of the doors when closing sound like a cooler lid, quiet and solid sounding. I also bought anti break inside window clear film on eBay and added. These are amazing for people trying to break a window(watch videos) to the van to grab a purse and should help people stay in a roll over. Replaced any loose worn steering components for a like new again nimble steering. Well for us diy’ers these vans can be a great option if taken seriously. Because really, the new vans are extremely expensive with very questionable expensive reliability they are still perfecting them some and I’m sure they have some of their own problems and headaches. And they could roll in high wind or especially if their complicated anti roll electronic applying braking system fails. Might as well make it a fun challenge(like playing a board game) to find the sweet spot with these older vans that are proven and reliable and often have much life left if we just fix the roll over issues with what we can reasonably easily do. Well I’m not an expert whatsoever but I’ve shared my experience. Take care and happy vanning!

Use no-seats E350 Club Wgn. Did a deer avoidance maneuver similar to this test starting at 70mph (limit). Was about 3 seconds from hitting 2 deer so had to initiate first turn harder than test to miss them, then slid/overcorrected to avoid center ditch then swung/slid rear into the right guard rail at about 35 degree angle on the 2nd correction. Sliding the beast sideways, despite good tires & dry pavement was an experience. now 0/4 deer hits not including one that jumped hi enough to clr van

There are a variety of suspension devices that claim to help control rollover and or loss of control. But front and rear sway bars can do the same thing. Also remember this vehicle is a truck not a sports car, slowing down and giving yourself time/space to manuver reduce surprises. Tyre pressures should be at the tyre's sidewall specification, factory recomended tyre pressure is for ride comfort, not payload capacity and safe handling.

Well either that or a advanced adaptive suspension that inhibits the body from swaying for example, making a right turn so you revert the body roll from the left to the center or lean in the right at a right turn, basically a sportyish suspension to keep grip and control full active throughout the turn(s).

Same cinematic stunt is done in the fish hook. 5:26 watch him turn left, let the body roll, and CRANK the wheel to the right. Hes using the roll centers centrifical force to sway the van. 5:42 he lets the body settle down before smoothly turning into the right turn. Second run isnt as drastic, but still evident - one difference though. Without roadmaster, he still cranks the wheel, but he decelerates (transfers weight off rear wheels makes understeer). With road master, he maintains throttle.

How much will the insurance company reduce our rates with one of these installed? I'm now seriously considering safety if I am traveling with 14 of my family members in the car, I must have it not crash... I don't want to have it crash and have medical bills be paid for... I want to not crash... I'm thinking about collision detection and other advanced features may allow less expensive insurance.... may want this feature too... but I think many have stability control now too.

stability control fixes all of this, and from what it looks like this doesn't stop the roll over ability of loss of control, stability control keep the car from lifting all the tires

Ya know what reduces risk of rollovers? Don't let dumbfucks drive big vehichles. I am a paint contractor, I've been driving Ford vans since I was 14 years old (now 20) and I have never once flipped that bitch, even in an emergency situation. The extended 1 ton is REALLY top heavy, when you put 4000 pounds of ladders on top.

So... this is not a vehicle for an immature driver with road rage. it's a cruiser but still will get off the line for a van. cruise @ 65mph in the middle lane or stay in the right lane. You will be fine! (1) Check your emergency break, they tend to fail or techs will become lazy and not set it. (2) Stop letting other people work on your van. Learn how work on your own van. They will RIP you off and not put all bolts and parts back properly.

The pictures are tragic. But is it really the vehicle's fault? Or is it the driver's fault? It is important to learn how to drive a vehicle of this size and weight. Never drive faster than the vehicle's ability to safely manoeuvre. It's easier to perform emergency lane change at 40mph than it is to perform that same lane change at 50mph.
