Mark Kozelek's music has this deep universal sadness in it, you can really hear how it comes straight from the soul. And all he needs is a nylon string guitar and poetry. It's so pure.

He's right up there with the Nick Drakes, Jeff Buckleys, and Elliot Smiths of the world. He puts his heart & soul.into every note. I was chaperoned into adulthood by the Red House Painters. I worked in the music industry in my 20's. You don't find the real deal very often. But Mark is a real artist in business of mostly posers.

My worst memory of Norway was playing a festival in Giske I got a call that my cat lost her ability to walk And she was very sick And I loved that cat more than anything in the world She shared my bed with me for sixteen years She was my little baby girl So I booked a flight out of the island of Giske With hopes of getting home in time to see my kitty cat Before she took her last breath The whole thing was so upsetting And the anxiety was building up so badly on the plane And I kept writing in my journal, “Please Pink, don't die on me Please Pink don't die on me Please Pink don't die on me when I'm up there in the sky I'll hate myself forever if I could not kiss you goodbye”

In a weird way the disconnect Mark feels (aka: wallpaper reference) between the audience and himself actually adds a background noise that adds to his brilliance. I know many of you may thak I am grabbing for straws, but seriously, listen to this with headphones and the background chatter actually highlights his intimate tones, despite being edited out at around the 12:00 min mark. So look forward to Mark playing in Vancouver again. Fingers crossed. Hail to Sun Kil Moon and their music that truly moves me. Thank-you! (from a Canadian; obviously).

I totally agree with you SirThinksTooMuch that the contrast between his humble but magic performance and the way the crowd do not give a fuck about him makes the whole nicer to see. XD

The murmurs sort of creep in out of nowhere, at first I thought it was some effect Mark added to be played in the background of the song, because it fit so well and bled into the song seemlessly. Then I thought what a dumbass am I it's just the people.

42:05, when Mark comes out of the flamenco inflected instrumental into full-on folk picking and the vocals pick up, it's got so much potency. Even as nonchalantly as he played, his performances around this time sounded like emotional exorcisms.

I really hate that such otherworldly and beautiful music has to come from such a shitty person. Mark’s music has uplifted and calmed me for almost a decade now, and that’s not going to change, but it’s really disappointing when someone you’ve looked up to for so long turns out to be a terrible guy. I guess that’s why they say “don’t meet your heroes.”
@slipperytiger2 жыл бұрын
I think there is this widely held belief that whoever produces art that speaks to you must be an infallible, almost holy, person. I also think it's human nature to feel this way, you don't want their art "tainted" by the thoughts of who they are/were as a person, you want to believe that not only are they a good person, but that they are likely even better than you. The problem with this is that we are all humans, we are all shitty people and have all done and said shitty things. His art doesn't elevate him to a higher status, it doesn't put him above horrible human behavior, he is a person at the end of the day. While you may love his art, you don't love him. I think that's a very important distinction to make and this should be a cautionary tale. Don't idolize people for the things they create or people they claim to be, at the end of the day none of us are without sin. In my opinion his music is about the human condition and the flaws, sadness, and moments of happiness that come along with that. This music couldn't have come from anyone else but a broken man, and broken men aren't always good men. At least this is my 2 cents, I've been a fan of his for a long time and I still appreciate his music despite what has come out.

@@slipperytiger My friend took me to see him on this tour at Union Chapel in London. It was one of the best gigs of my life. I then went with said friend two more times and Mark was an absolute arsehold at both gigs. Shouting at fans, moaning about not being relevant anymore, singing songs about how his fans are ugly etc. To play to a large church full of fans who paid their hard earned money to support you and still feel hard done by speaks to the kind of issues that could turn you into an abusive partner. It was sad and I wasn't at all surprised when the revelations came out.

@@jackworthington4660 indie music has gone extremely puritanical and nearly fetishizing a regular public humiliation ritual and tasting blood in the water. basically they want to keep the industry as PR corporate friendly as possible, touting bands that are basically akin to Disney Radio artists.
