Our societies have been evolving to greater heights ever since scientific advancements have taken momentum from the beginning of the 19th century. We are living a life which our ancestors could have not even imagined. And so are our unimaginable problems. The modern society is suffering from ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, poor immunity, anxiety etc. caused due to stressful & sedentary lifestyles we have been adopting and unknown diseases caused by mutated viruses. We have experienced that the spread of such viruses cripples our livelihood and cause greater damage to humanity. Modern science could provide only precautionary recommendations such as sanitation, distancing etc. but greatly depend only on naturally generated human immunity to fight such deadly viruses. We have also seen that when it comes to such non-medical methods of disease fighting, the world has always returned to the roots of Indian culture, be it, a folded palm Namaste as a social distancing alternative of handshake etiquette, Pranayama and Yoga as natural stress relievers, use of Ayurvedic herbs as immunity boosters etc. Hence, old practises which have evolved based on thousands of years of collective human experience has relevance and reverence when the modern society struggles to understand and fix new problems.
Our culture emphasises on respecting and worshiping nature as a preventive measure from ailments caused by the elements. We know great yogis who have attained enlightenment by worshipping the Sun. All our yagnas start with the worship of the sacred fire. Ganga aarti (river worship) is a form of reverence to water. On Ganesh Chaturthi we mould Ganesh idols using clay, pray and then dissolve it in water. This is a form of worshiping mother Earth. There are traditions which pray to the forests, trees, birds, animals, and many-many more. These traditions were devised by experienced jnanis of this country for the betterment (such as peace of mind, prosperity, unity in the family, good health, and love) of the human society.
In the senseless run of catching-up with western societies we have forgotten the importance of preserving our traditions. We have discontinued a lot of sacred rituals which have been protecting our people for centuries by condemning them to be mere superstitions. The bottom line is we need to understand the importance of reviving our lost culture and preserving such traditions for the future generations to use and benefit from.
The Sun is considered to be the foundation of our environment by our ancestors. And it was immensely popular to worship the Sun God to attain enlightenment in the olden days. Hence, appealing to the Sun God today will evoke such enlightened souls of our country to restore our lost culture and in-turn bless us with good health, prosperity, and peace. Why don’t we start now?
Though there are many methods to worship the Sun God, this is a simple method which can be done at home.
This worship shall be done every Sunday at home between 6:00am and 9:00am.
Worship Method:
Fill a glass bowl with a handful of wheat grains (not flour) and place it in your pooja area. With your ring finger mark OM (in your language) on the wheat grains. Sprinkle some turmeric and Kumkum on the grains and decorate it with flowers. Light a sesame oil (preferred) or ghee lamp. Offer a little honey or panagam* as prasad to the Sun God. Now, sit and chant the Surya Gayathri Mantra 108 times. Conclude the worship with an Arti and distribute the prasad. You may store the wheat grains used in the worship in a separate container and later consume it.
Surya Gayathri:
“Aswadhwajaaya Vidhmahe'- Paasa Hasthaaya Dheemahi Thannah Soorya Pracho Dhayaath”
As you chant this mantra you may offer any red colour flower as archana to the Sun God.
On performing this simple worship every Sunday, we may observe a slow revival of our culture and tradition through natural course through the blessings of Lord Surya and the Almighty. Also, the great Rishis and jnanis of our country will bless us with spiritual strength, wisdom, good health, longevity, peace and prosperity. We strongly hope that you will worship the Sun God every Sunday and empower both our homes and our motherland with prosperity.
