The British government would not get the same favourable treatment that they originally received when the EU was first formed. For example the UK retained the pound sterling as currency. Usually a change like rejoining the EU would take at least a decade. I worked in government for 30 plus years. Wheels do get reinvented but never quickly. Brexit was bad for young people through narrowed job opportunities, as well as old people who retired to Europe and had access to the European healthcare system. At least the Tories were tossed out so the UK can start to undo their disastrous policies.

But also, Rowan (the heroine of the book - not Audrey, who is the author) is very far from a lamb to the slaughter, strong and not naive. At the point where the book opens, Rowan has studied drama in London but is back in the Twin Cities, co-directing a production of “Macbeth.” Audrey did once play Lady Macbeth on stage,, but again, the heroine of the book is Rowan, not Audrey. Elements in the book were suggested by Audrey’s own experiences, but the plot and characters are entirely fictional. It is not Audrey’s story but Rowan’s! Does KLM fly to the Twin Cities? You might find it worth exploring if you like theater and old mansions.

While she raised questions during the hearing, she voted with the republican 5 on immunity. That said, she doesn't seem to favor Thomas. Justice Sotomayor wrote the scathing dissent on immunity.
