12:35 - Ref view here! The ref here could (and almost certainly would) have brought play back and awarded a penalty. It was a fantastic advantage played though! The rule of thumb I was taught for playing advantage was something like "did the team gain an advantage from me not calling the foul". In this case, if he had missed, then merely the act of getting to take a shot from around 7-8 yards while under pressure would not be an advantage over getting a penalty - so definite penalty (for me) if he had missed. Obviously scoring the goal ends the advantage time successfully. Was a great call. Especially at this level, a lot of referees are loathe to play advantage. Also goes for teams at this level and below, though. When I signal that I'm currently playing advantage, some teams see me and just stop - they've been dying for a break in play to catch their breath! :)

Its a tough one Smiv, if he misses the shot the ref can call it back for the penalty, as you have played advantage and the laws state that you can call back any foul, But a shot can be seen as using your advantage, imagine an advantage as a free pass to make a move, shooting revokes that pass because you have fully used your advantage, so some refs wouldn’t call it back, personally I would but it’s a tough decision.

A few comments on here on playing advantage in the area. The key here is that the ref doesn’t signal advantage, he just seems to pause for a moment to see what happens, which is the correct approach in the circumstances - and worked well given the goal was scored. Had the shot been blocked or whatever, he’d have been within his rights to still blow for the penalty as he didn’t signal advantage. With a penalty situation, you should only ever formally signal advantage if, following the infringement, the ball was about to be put into an empty net/similar. Guidance though says refs generally shouldn’t formally signal advantage following a foul in the area, they should just ‘wait a moment and see’.

Smiv, you asked about refs playing advantage on a penalty. Unless there is a very obvious goal scoring opportunity, practice is to always blow the pen. From our angle it didn’t look super obvious, but of course the ref was in a better position. Good reffing overall I thought. But only 3 yellow cards for a lot of nasty challenges... sometimes I think if those three yellows were for the first three bad challenges, none of the other challenges would have happened, and everyone would have been safer. Still, they were all pretty borderline.
