@@LTZKnight , TLDR: it's a pain in the dick. You are better off downloading a game engine and trying to make your own game from scratch. Everything is in hex code which just looks like a never ending stream of random numbers and letters... it's not like a programming language where you can look at it and kind of start to figure out what is going on. This is because EVERYTHING is insanely compacted and everything compressed to deal with the limitations of the hardware. For you that means even more limitations. To start with, unless someone has mapped out where everything is, it's a needle in a haystack combined with solving the fucking Zodiac killer's cipher. When you do know where the information is you want to change, it's not like writing normal code where you can just hit enter and put new stuff in. Oh no, that's when shit just gets terrible. The address is like GPS coordinates for the specific information is located, and every time that bit of code is used, it is referenced. So you would have to find free space on the rom, and then find EVERY instance of those references and change it to the new address. It's also super easy to fuck up converting back and forth from hex, so good luck finding where the mistake is once it's made. Say you just want to change the text of "Fire Field" but the new text is a single character more. So now you have to find free space, put the code for that text there, and change every reference to the new location. Oh! and depending on where everything is in relation to each other that can make things run slower or screw things up. Weeee! Welcome to hell! This puts you in a situation where you want to change as little as possible. All of this means unless someone has made a tool that makes, say, track editing easy for that game you are just looking at the tile maps and a wall of hex code and piecing that new track together blind. Any change you want to make (since obviously you have to test it) you have to go through the whole process again. Also, the information could be all over the place... in Mario Kart the color palettes for the drivers are with the color palettes for each track... so you have to hunt them all down (including things like character select screen and the trophy scene)... it's not like you change it once in one place and it applies to every instance where you see the sprites in the game. Why is it like that? Who the hell knows, it's probably some arbitrary limitation they had. Also, since everything is squished together as much as possible and reusing the same things over and over, you plan something out and then find out it won't work without changing a lot of other things. For instance, I wanted to do a hack of Mario Kart, and I wanted to change Mario to Wario and Luigi to Waluigi. Sound simple enough, right? Not a whole lot is changing, and it seemed like a "safe" choice. Well fuck me, Mario and Luigi share the same sprites from the neck down. So unless you want to have to EXPAND the rom to add new information (a whole other pain) you have to use the same sprites from the neck down for your new characters. Then I find out Mario shares a color palette with Toad and Luigi shares one with Koopa. So back to the drawing board to either figure out how to change that, or change your plans to fit arbitrary limitations. On and on it goes with this shit until you realize 1) you probably can't do the thing you originally wanted to and 2) It is a HUGE waste of time. You'll spend years fighting it when you could spend that time to learn something like C# that you can actually apply to something else. Plus, if you make a "clone" of whatever game you wanted to make in something like Unity or Godot, you can just change the mechanics a bit, add unique graphics and music, and actually be able to sell it.
