Our tradition is making hop n johns with mixed greens and stewed tomatoes and cornbread and rice. Hop n johns - ground sausage, one roll spicy one roll mild, one package of smoked sausage cut in half then half again and dice, be sure and brown meat then add onions, garlic, black pepper, complete seasoning, brown, add 2-3 cans of black eyed peas, chicken broth or stock, cook down add stewed tomatoes, and then i add 2 large cans of Margaret Holmes or Glory brand of mixed greens to pot, i add bacon grease and a touch of salt add more broth and cook down. Make a big pot of rice and ladle this over the rice. This is so good for days, but it’s a one pot meal that incorporates all of the new years items. Dont forget to make your cornbread and have some pepper sauce on the side! Happy New Year 2024!

Carrie, you may find this unorthodox, but when you have a large bundles of greens, after cutting off the stems, place them in the washing machine on the delicate cycle, so the leaves don't bruise. Put a little dish washing liquid a fourth of a teaspoon. Wash about 2-3 mins, rense 1-2 mins., spin cycle l min. Remove the greens. As you get older and the many pots of greens you have washed over the years, the cold water begins to make your hands ache/ arthritis. Hopes it helps ❤ ❤

The way I always clean my greens, of any kind, is I fold them vertically, and I rip the stem completely out all the way through. Then, I tear them into pieces. My greens have zero STEMS!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

For New Year’s we always have cabbage cooked down with potatoes and tomato gravy usually with neck bones; black eyed peas with ham hocks and jalapeño cornbread. Before my daddy got sick he would always cook pork loins stuffed with cream cheese and jalapeños on the smoker. He passed recently and I loved cooking with him and also got a lot of beautiful memories from sharing time with him. He would generally put some red wine in some of the dishes he taught me and would always drink a glass of wine while cooking. He would say “always remember to cook with a wine that you would drink and the only way to know if you enjoy it is to drink a glass of it! Keep in mind he always used the same wine every time he cooked with it. 😉😅 Lord, this video brought back some beautiful; amazing and funny memories. My grandmother, who passed at 108, sent me to the store for her to make some mustard greens and this was the first time she was going to teach me how to make mustard greens. I went to the store and picked up 2 bunches of greens. When I got home and she saw what I got, she said, what the hell am I supposed to do with this? She then told me how those 2 bunches are going to cook down and are only going to yield about 2 tablespoons. I went back to the store and bought 8 more bunches! 😂

My mom then I used to always cook a roasted, stuffed turkey with all the trimmings on New Years Day. I'm old and crippled now, my nearest family is 800 miles away so my New Years breakfast, lunch and dinner was 2 slices of bread dipped in a glass of wine. Wish it was more but I can't stand at the stove and I don't have running water to wash dishes. All these comments about how abundant your meals were sound delicious!

Amazing New Year's dinner. Recent subscriber and I loooove how you take your time and explain er'thang. My mom taught me to cook a traditional meal and we didn't have any poultry as part of our new years meal... poultry scratch backwards and we are moving ahead, that's why we eat pork because pigs root forward. Either way, we're blessed. Although my mom passed in June, she lives in me. Thank you for sharing.

My mom always had a specific New Year’s day dinner she cooked every year….we would walk in the house, and all we could smell was sauerkraut and cabbage, and she would put some smoked sausage in it! It was the grossest smell in the world to me, but what I wouldn’t give to walk in her house and be able to smell that now that she’s gone❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
