International Sunday School Lesson - Sunday School in 7minutes
Our lesson tells the story of Stephen, a man of remarkable faith, courage, and ultimately, martyrdom. Through his example, we'll explore what it means to live in faith even when faced with challenges and opposition.
Remember, the early church is facing internal struggles and external persecution. Here, tensions rise between Hebrew or Jewish christians and Hellenistic or Greek believers, sparking the need for deacons, like Stephen, to ensure fair distribution of food aid.
Stephen's character, as outlined in Acts 6:7-15, manifests itself through five inner qualities, each reflective of his deep-rooted faith and devotion to God:
Full of the Holy Spirit: Stephen's life was marked by a daily walk under the guidance and control of the Holy Spirit, evident in his wisdom and Spirit-filled speech.
Full of Wisdom: His understanding of God's truth and his ability to apply it wisely in every situation showcased the depth of his spiritual maturity.
Full of Faith: Stephen's unwavering trust in God's sovereignty empowered him to face opposition and persecution with courage and confidence.
Full of Grace: Having experienced the transformative power of God's grace in his own life, Stephen extended grace and forgiveness even to his persecutors.
Full of Power: Through signs and wonders, Stephen bore witness to the mighty works of God, demonstrating the supernatural power at work within him.
Because or Despite his qualities, Stephen faced harsh opposition from religious leaders who felt threatened by his teachings. They falsely accused him of blasphemy, distorting his message and inciting violence.
His courageous witness in the face of fierce opposition serves as a timeless example for believers today.
As we reflect on Stephen's life, we are reminded of four crucial truths:
Blinded Hearts and Hardened Minds: Just as Stephen faced opposition from those blinded by Satan and hardened by sin, modern Christians encounter hearts closed to the Gospel. Prayer becomes our weapon as we seek God's intervention in softening these hearts.
Inside Religious Opposition: Religious fervor can often mask a hardened heart and close minds, hindering individuals from embracing the truth of the Gospel. Like Stephen, we must be prepared for opposition, especially from within religious communities.
Facing Opposition with Faith: Stephen's response to opposition teaches us to remain steadfast in our faith, trusting in God's sovereignty even amidst persecution and adversity.
God's Sovereign Work: Ultimately, we must trust in God's sovereign plan, even when it defies human logic. Stephen's martyrdom, though seemingly untimely, paved the way for Paul's conversion and the spread of the Gospel to distant lands.
So, what can we learn from Stephen's story today?
Facing opposition: Living in faith doesn't guarantee a smooth ride. Challenges are inevitable, but we can draw strength from knowing God is with us.
Staying true to our values: Like Stephen, we must stand firm in our beliefs, even when pressured to compromise.
Responding with love: Even amidst opposition, we're called to show love and grace, reflecting the character of Christ.
Leaving results to God: Our job is to faithfully share the gospel and leave the outcome in God's hands.
Modern-day Christians face persecution or discrimination. Called narrowminded, self righteous Bible thumpers our faith can sometimes make us less attractive, both personally and professionally. Stevens's courage and resilience inspire us to live out our faith with boldness and love,.
Living in faith isn't always easy, but Stephen's example reminds us that God equips us with the strength and grace to persevere. Let's remember his story and strive to embody the same godly values in our own lives.
