They say that the key to humor is timing. A good joke is simply not a good joke if it is not timed correctly. Thus, the "late word" is never a welcome word. In the dialogue that took place between Jesus and Pontius Pilate, Pilate had the chance to save both himself and Jesus. His failure was the lack of courage to speak the right word at the right time. When his final word came concerning Jesus, it was too little and too late.
