I must stand up for sheep here. They are not stupid. Their macula is not as good as other animal's so their central 'high definition' vision is quite poor. Their eyes are set up to better detect peripheral movement and therefore they can avoid being eaten by spotting danger earlier. Calling a sheep stupid is the animal equivalent of calling a partially sighted person stupid. They are lost because they are blind to the way and therefore they need the shepherd to guide the way. The direct comparison is with spiritual blindness.
