Matthew 7:7-11 - The good gifts of God the Father. Matthew 11:25-27 - Jesus as the revealer of the Father. Revelation 5:7-8 - The prayers of saints as incense in God’s presence. Proverbs 4:23 - Guarding the heart as the wellspring of life. Ephesians 5:16 - Redeeming the time because the days are evil. 1 Corinthians 6:17 - The mystical union of the believer with Christ. Introduction Purpose of the Message: To deepen our understanding of God as Father, explore the importance of guarding the heart as the altar of prayer, and recognize the spiritual significance of redeeming lost time. Core Message: Prayer is an intimate dialogue with the Father, grounded in a heart that is pure and aligned with Him. It is through this secret place of communion that believers access the rewards of prayer, sustain a fruitful spiritual life, and redeem lost opportunities. Main Teachings 1. The Righteous Deeds of Kingdom People Jesus identified three key practices of Kingdom people in Matthew 6: Giving: Giving must be done in secret, with God as the primary audience. Hypocrisy in giving forfeits spiritual rewards. Fasting: Fasting should be directed toward deepening intimacy with God, not impressing others. God rewards those who fast in humility and secrecy. Prayer: True prayer flows from the heart, seeking God alone, not human validation. Hypocritical prayer is public and performative, robbing the individual of God’s reward. 2. God’s Fatherhood in Prayer The Nature of God’s Fatherhood: God’s fatherhood is perfect, surpassing human fatherhood, which the Bible calls “evil” in comparison (Matthew 7:11). True prayer requires a revelation of God as a loving and faithful Father who delights in giving good gifts to His children. Jesus as the Revealer of the Father: Only Jesus has the authority to reveal God’s fatherhood (Matthew 11:27). There are nine distinct revelations of God’s fatherhood in scripture; the sermon explored two: God is in Secret: God operates in the privacy of the heart, emphasizing authenticity in prayer (Matthew 6:6). God Sees in Secret: God discerns our hearts and motives, rewarding those who seek Him sincerely. 3. The Altar of the Heart and Its Protection The Heart as the Altar: The heart is the spiritual altar where prayers ascend to God as incense (Revelation 5:8). The heart's condition determines the effectiveness of prayer and spiritual life. Guarding the Heart: Proverbs 4:23 reminds believers to protect their hearts diligently because it is the wellspring of life. Satan often attacks the heart through distractions, offenses, and emotional wounds to hinder intimacy with God. 4. Redeeming the Time Ephesians 5:16 calls believers to "redeem the time" because of the evil days. What Does It Mean to Redeem the Time? To recover spiritual opportunities lost to sin, distraction, or stagnation. To align with God’s purpose and timing in every season of life. How to Redeem the Time: Prioritize the Secret Place: Make prayer and intimacy with God the foundation of daily life. Seek God’s Wisdom: Rely on divine guidance to discern the right actions and decisions. Trust in Restoration: God can redeem lost years when we turn to Him with a renewed heart. Illustrations and Examples 1. Lessons in Humility and Dependence Apostle Arome shared a personal testimony about losing his car and being instructed by God to use public transport for seven years: This season stripped him of pride and taught him to find God in the secret place of his heart. Through this humbling experience, he learned to prioritize intimacy with God over material status. 2. Spiritual Sensitivity in Daily Life Even in the bustling marketplaces of Lagos, Apostle Arome trained himself to discern God’s voice. By cultivating awareness of God’s presence, he accessed divine strategies and revelations. 3. Resignation at God’s Command Arome described how he resigned from a lucrative oil industry position at God’s instruction, just two weeks before a major promotion. This act of obedience came from years of learning to trust God’s timing and direction. Practical Applications 1. Develop a Personal Prayer Life Dedicate intentional time daily for secret communion with God. Use prayer as a platform for dialogue, not just requests. 2. Guard the Altar of Your Heart Protect your heart from bitterness, distractions, and pride. Ensure that your motives in prayer are pure and God-centered. 3. Align with God’s Fatherhood Approach prayer with the understanding that God is a loving Father who desires to reward and guide His children. Trust in His provision and timing. 4. Seek Rewards Over Answers Pursue intimacy with God rather than just seeking solutions to problems. Recognize that spiritual rewards transform your character and purpose. 5. Redeem Lost Time Re-anchor your life in God’s purpose, asking Him to restore lost opportunities. Cultivate a sense of urgency in aligning with God’s will.
