Dear Bradley, As an archaeologist, I'm happy to hear you like ancient (pre)history. Here's a tip for a great podcast: ’Tides of History’, which is as educational as it is entertaining. Hopefully, you enjoy it as much as I do. I'm curious what you might think of it. Best wishes from Holland.

Fun Fact: Mr. Eastwood _HATED_ cigars and smoking in general. That ubiquitous sneer that became common place for Clint was a result of the cheroots he was asked to smoke. This only helped to* propel his persona even further. Especially when filming Westerns. This is why we have the grimace known as the *"Eastwood wince".* Stay classy my friends. *EDITED for grammar.

Those cheroots are surprisingly good for cheap machine rolled cigars in my opinion.

I recently got my PhD in classics and had the opportunity to visit the archaeological site of Troy with a class. I highly recommend seeing the Troad--Istanbul was beautiful as well. Turkey happens to also be an interesting place for the pipe hobby, and though I wasn't into it yet at the time, I remember seeing lots of meerschaums in the bazaars. I'll have to go back one day to pick up some pipes and rugs.

My Italian uncle used to smoke Toscani cigats, and when it got down close to the end, he would tear it apart and put it in his pipe and smoke it. A rather Italian activity it would appear.

My great uncle smoked DeNobile cigars that looked like dried twigs. Then he quit smoking them for health reasons & chewed on them all day.

I also have read that Clint Eastwood smoked Marsh Wheeling Virginians, as I did decades ago. Fantastic, cheap smoke! Don't care for Dark Fired Kentucky in a pipe blend, but in an American cigar it's very tasty, so much better, IMO, than the likes of Dutch Masters, King Edward, etc. Good show today.

I love history and a significant portion of my reading is either historical non-fiction or fiction. I do go back and forth between ancient/medieval history and more modern periods, though. Modern subjects (e.g. WWI/WWII) are great because obviously we know so much more about them. We have no shortage of first-hand accounts and even video in some cases. That can be nice when you really want to dive in and learn all you can about a subject. However, I also love ancient history because there is so much we don't know that there is almost a fantastical/mythical element to it all. Even "history" can almost be like reading a fictional account, especially since so much of the ancient world was tied up with what we now consider myth. I did enjoy Eric Cline's 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed about the bronze age collapse.

I think so too. There has been a lot of speculation, but the stubs he has in the movies don't look like Toscanos, too thin. Eastwood himself said something about "virginias", but he didn't go into much detail.

I'm a big history guy! My undergraduate was in Biblical Studies and Archaeology, which included studying the Ancient Near East from the Bronze Age up until the Persian period and the Greco-Roman period of the early of the Eastern Mediterranean. I'm currently doing a masters (will be done with it in the fall!) where I interact regularly with ANE (more so Iron Age) and Greco-Roman history.

The Ancient Near East is critical to Biblical studies. Did you get a different perspective on Genesis after studying the ANE?
@TommyHail
@TommyHail Ай бұрын
@@gustingdis It's given me a whole new perspective on the Hebrew Bible as a whole! The same goes for Greco-Roman background with the NT.
@gustingdis
@gustingdis Ай бұрын
@@TommyHail There is a lot of newish research pertaining the ANE context of the Old Testament, as am sure you know. Reading the ancient texts has had a massive impact on how I understand it, and it seems like only now it is becoming more mainstream. I hope more churches start to understand, these studies can end a lot of problems with interpretation and also create some different problems all together.
