It blows my mind that bakeries are open on Sunday mornings. How is that legal?
@AndersHenke4 жыл бұрын
LythaWausW The respective laws do have certain exceptions, and this does include bakeries, petrol stations or shops supplying travellers - so those smallish supermarkets in larger train stations or airports are open, though most of them do always sell at substantial higher prices (an exception I’m aware of is a Rewe market located in the railway long distance terminal at Frankfurt airport). And due to the low profit margin of selling petrol, many petrol stations do make a substantial profit from their (constantly overpriced) food sales.

@@AndersHenke Anders, I appreciate your tactful answer. You haven't given me a reason, though, whyemployees have to get up on sacred Sunday to sell us bread. My husband just told me that they are not allowed to sell, bread, actually. It must only be Broetchen, baked that morning, for Sunday sale. And any left-over bread loaves from Saturday are forbidden to be sold. Is this true? If so, that is whacked. I am poor enough to want a day-old loaf and that is not allowed? I wish I knew what happens to the day-old loaves on Saturday evening. *honestly asking here* Why is cake is allowed to be sold, on Sunday? I had the striking experience of going to a large gardening store on a Sunday, to see the complexity of the law. I was allowed to buy flowers. But no gardening tools to plant them with; they were cordoned off with red/white tape. And if I wanted to buy fertizliers, that was also blocked off with red/white tape. WHAT THE HECK. We are either allowed to garden or we are not. I trust you will have an answer to this dilemna, that makes little sense to me.

During the current coronavirus crisis, Germany also allowed supermarkets to open on Sundays: the idea was to more evenly spread the customers over weekdays and so lessen the risk of infection while shopping. After a few days of silence, all major supermarkets (not any unions!) announced not to make use of this permit, as their hardworking staff would need at least a day of rest. So after about a month of not being used by stores, this extra Sunday shopping permit was recently removed, though the usual exception still apply (bakeries, petrol stations or markets at airports and train stations supplying travellers).

@@Kellydoesherthing Shop opening regulations are in Germany normally made by the states ("Ländersache") since the federal legislative leave it to them. You come home around 4pm you have time to go shopping, cook your meal, mow your lawn. It's about 3 houshold hours per day !!! You are such exhausted after 6 days of labour and home work. You want to rest. And only shops are close, restaurants, theme parks, any sport facilities are open. And "silence" is limited to machinery. You can scythe your lawn on sunday, if you like ;-), and inside the house you can do all but drilling. Some shopping malls are open on Sundays in Germany, but it's usually only in big cities. What you can do, however, is go to gas stations, they're our 7-11's, and some of them are open 24/7, even in smaller towns or cities. That's why gas stations in Germany offer take-away food, packaged food and drinks and everyday use items. -- Whether you can make noise on Sundays always depends on your neighbors. Some aren't all that quiet. ;) And if you want to dispose of your glass bottles, you can often do it on a Sunday morning, usually everyone will be asleep, and it takes a while until someone wakes up. ;) But it's true that sometimes it's hard to get everything done on Saturdays (especially for people like me, Saturday is my sleep day when I relax from the work week). Many shops have open late (until 9 or 10 PM) on weekdays so people get their chance to go shopping even when they're working during daytime. Things are much more lax nowadays, back in the day when I was a kid (in the 1970ies), shops were open only from 9 to 5 (with a 1 hour lunch break at noon), and on Saturdays only from 9 to 12. I'm glad that opening hours have been relaxed. BTW I'm not sure if that's still the case, but there had been regional differences in that as well, so Bavaria had stricter rules than other states. In the 1990ies, the last time I spent time in Bavaria, we used to say they're flipping the sidewalks up at 6 PM, because at that time, everything was closed. :D

More accurate, it's like this: It's allowed to make public noise (= by working) 07:00 - 20:00 h, except sundays and holy days. On these days, you are not allowed to make noise at all. It's common to respect noon (as a private person 12-15:00 h, as a professional 12-13:00 h) as well. You may work in your home on sundays, as long you'll make any noise. I once did painting work in my home on sundays and even at night - anyone cares, because it was a silent work. Surely we have parties and surely you may receive visitors on sundays, but usually there aren't any parties on sundays: The people have to work on monday again. Shops are closed on sundays, but it doesn't mean everything is closed. Restaurants, cafés, beer gardens and pubs are open. In case you've forgotten some small potatoes, the next gas station will have it. In the cities some bakeries are opened on sunday morning. Museums, theaters, public pools, saunas, zoos and even some libraries are open on sundays. There is a lot you can do on sunday in Germany: For your body, for you soul, for your education - and that's what sundays are for!

Friday and Saturday evening are the times for loud parties. I think it is a good invention to have one day in the week that is quiet. Sunday does not mean you cannot do anything. You can go to the sea with your friend or have a barbecue , go to the soccer-stadium or to the cinema (and maybe to the church if you are believing). Our labour unions (like Ver.Di) would freak out if politicians would try to abolish Sunday. The poor staff for example in supermarktes working in layers also needs a day off! Was ist daran verkehrt?

You are thinking like an adult. When you have kids it takes a day. Everything isnt in one shop (usually), and it spread further apart than places in Europe. When I was a kid it would take us an hour just to get to the first store. When I was a kid Walmart didn't exist in Florida yet. Nowadays a lot of people don't shop at Walmart because their quality is shitty and they treat their employees like shit. It takes awhile to find clothes, shoes, school supplies, birthday presents for friends, among other things for 2 kids. Sometimes it's for more than 2 kids. As an adult if you go to a cellphone company to get a new plan for your phone on the weekend it'll take you 4 or 5 hours in some places. Also shopping for a new vehicle it can take you an entire day.

I've seen a number of these videos from people from different countries and they've been slightly interesting. I'm watching because I really don't have anything else to do during this lock down. But there is one question I have had that the German videos have failed to answer. I was a teen back in the 70s and this friend of my mother made an amazing German Chocolate cake. I've never had one like it since. I would love it if you would compare German Chocolate cakes in the US and Germany. Are ones made in Germany better? As I try to keep my sanity during this lock down, you might just save someone's life by answering.

Regarding the US, en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_laws_in_the_United_States is worth a look: there used to be quite a lot of Sunday shopping restrictions, though most of them were lifted, but quite many are still enforced. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday_shopping is also worth a look on the different rules in European countries. Sunday shopping may be permitted in tourist areas, sometimes cities do decide on their own and others even introduced a Sunday shopping ban just a few decades ago, while others at the same time started lifting their bans. And until 1994, the UK only allowed shopping in specific stores like garden stores, but only enforced mild fines on the store owner (none on the shopper), so some stores did ignore the law as their profits have been higher than the fines. Over the years, the restrictions were lifted. And on the other hand, Poland during the recent decade considered introducing a Sunday shopping ban.

Spot on! I guess this tradition comes from times when women did all the household chores during the week, as they were supposed to stay home for the three k's (Kinder, Küche, Kirche) and did not have jobs, carreers or a life of their own...Then they could stay in the kitchen on Sunday and prepare a so-called 'Sunday roast' to be served at 12:30 sharp when the hard working husband came home from Frühschoppen (actually binge drinking between church and lunch), ate and then slept through the afternoon. Those days are mostly over, but the tradition still sticks. I hope legal regulations will eventally be lifted - when stores will be allowed to open on Sundays, the other restrictions will also gradually disappear. Today is a holiday here (Tag der Arbeit)... so it's basically another boring Sunday) so I will take my motorcycle for a spin and spens the evening Booking extensively. Take care and keep doing your thing! 😊

Oh, this video was so on point. One of the very first disappointments upon landing in Deutschland was Sonntag. By the way this Sunday closing is not limited to Deutschland only, some other Europa countries do it also. I do like driving on Sundays in Deutschland, less vehicles on the road unless you encounter all the kids driving home from their parents houses. Strange that on those occasions when the stores are allowed to open on Sundays the stores are quite busy with shoppers. Seems that not all the people want to stay home and do nothing or hangout with family. One of your best videos ever.

First off, it should be, “If Germany WERE, not was“ Second, I know this is supposed to be comedy, but most is half-truths or just typical cliches. As an American living in Germany for almost thirty years, there was a time of “Sonntag ist Ruhetag”. Even the stores would close on Saturdays at 1/2 p.m. and during the week at latest 6 p.m. However, over the years it has become more Americanized, unfortunately. Personally, I‘m quite pleased to have a day without the usual crowds and for those working in retail, they can enjoy their family time.
@Kellydoesherthing4 жыл бұрын
No, it’s “was” because you treat “Germany” as a third person singular since I’m literally embodying Germany as a character in the video. It’s easy to understand if you replace “Germany” with the name of your pet, for example. “If Fido was a person, he would open the fridge”.

@@Kellydoesherthing Thanks for your reply, but you're incorrect. You use "were" instead of was in statements that are contrary to fact. I have a question for Germans. Is it true that bakeries are open on Sunday mornings but are *only* allowed to sell Broetchen and Cake? No bread at all, not even day-old bread? I went to a gardening store on a Sunday and was totally amazed because they are allowed to sell flowers but no tools, no fertilizer, no pots to put the flowers in. The store had entire aisles/sections cordoned off with red/white tape and even individual product areas had signs, "This item will be available for purchase on Monday" which I found funny cuz it's such a positive way of looking at the truth "Illegal for purchase on a Sunday." Are employees punished if they accidentally sell a loaf of day-old bread or a flower pot on Sunday?

Not that there were crazy amounts (mostly > 10%) of dislike but more than on other videos. Why do you think is that? Can you see on your analytics where (land) the dislikes come from. I would be very interessted in that. Are those americans who doesn't appreciate your criticism or are those germans which don't like the way your talking abouth them? greetings from Switzerland :)
@Kellydoesherthing4 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I am unfortunately unable to see the demographics on who clicks like or dislike on my videos (or the comments for that matter) but to be completely transparent, about 70% of my audience is German and when I read the comments, the majority of the negative comments come from Germans. So, my unscientific assumption is that the majority of the dislikes come from Germans who, based on the negative comments, are unhappy with my content because they feel that it is overly critical of their country and culture, or that it is wrong, or that I shouldn't be talking about Germany because I'm not German, or whatever other reason compels them to click dislike. I think the most dislikes I have on a video is my German Apartment tour video where it's about a 2 like to 1 dislike ratio last I checked. I hope that answer is at least a little interesting albeit not exactly what you were hoping to get. Thanks for watching!
