I like to pick up subs from the pawn shop and disassemble them and then rebuild them it’s really cheap as hell to make your own subs and to follow your directions.

back in 2010 I got a JL 6W3v3 for $120 from crutchfield to replace a dry rot factory sub. The market for small subs was very limited back then so IIRC my only options were Kicker or JL. Today the same JL subwoofer at crutchfield now cost $280. IMO it was totally worth the $120 since its been in constant use for 13yrs and counting but no way in hell would I buy one at todays price of $280.

Tens are fine but the problem is people typically expect more out of them it just depends on how powerful the magnet is and how much excursion you can get out of them. Typically to compensate people will often put them in a large box but at that point you might as well get 12s

My question is with these "mega surrounds" and large dustcaps doesn't this reduce the effective piston displacement, in this case making a 10" more like a 8"?

Yes, 3". No, cannot be made into a 4" without mill work to the steel parts. Better to start from scratch.

Tech question, on the Jerry ain loud channel he just bought 6 new DS18 xx15 subs and he was all excited saying the reason he chose them was they had 42mm of one way x max!!?? With a typical 3" coiled triple stack with what looked like a 20mm +/- top plate I do not see how 42mm 1 way is even remotely possible... My quick math using the 1 way x max formula (which if I'm correct is ww minus top plate/gap thickness divided by 2) figures the coil would have to be roughly 4" tall...! Is my math correct? I personally don't know of any brand using a 3"x4" coil especially with a run of the mill 300oz ferrite triple 1" stack motor. I'm guessing that's 42mm a 2 way measurement or just 100% bullshit. The motor I built has a 3"/76.2mm tall coil and a not very thick 5/8/15.8mm top plate and that still only yields 30.2mm of one way x max of my formula is right.... my 400oz motors have a 2.5"/ 63.5mm tall coil with a 21mm top plate and that yields 21.25mm of 1 way x max... Now that seems oddly exact to half of his supposedly one way number....? Hmmm could DS18 be lying? Huh If so someone bought a product exclusively for a reason that's not real thing.... So his "upgrade" was a samegrade!

Well, many companies tend to skew the Xmax numbers to work in their favor. That's why I prefer to just let people know the wind height of the coil.
