I’ve been growing Sungolds for about 6 or 7 years now in So Cal. Every year I do a blind taste test that include a few cherry tomato varieties with my grandsons. They choose the Sungolds every time. They’re like eating tomato candy right off the vine!

I've grown sweet 100's, sweet millions, yellow pear, grape tomato's, indigo rose and quite a few others that I just can't remember the names at this time. The Sun Gold cherry tomatoes are the sweetest and best tasting out of all the cherry type tomato's I've grown and one of the most prolific growers also. You just can't go wrong with a couple Sun Gold tomato plants somewhere in your yard (potted or in the ground). Thanks for the video and info. God bless

I'm in Tennessee and I can honesty say, these are my new favorite! They are indeed as delicious as you have described and pretty easy to take care of. All of my plants are in large front porch decorative pots. I have 2 tomato plants per pot with about a 3ft. Metal trellis and one red bell pepper in in each pot as well. I pruned to get maximum fruit with minimal foliage. As long as my fruit can get sunlight and the plant can get plenty of air flow inside and out of the foliage, It's working excellently! Also I lightly treat with neem oil once a week.

All soil amendments as well as compost are 100% organic. I have had minimal blight and way-way less pests.

Love the taste, unique for a tomato. At 62 deg north the temp on cloudy days is 45-50 Deg F or 7-10 deg C, they are grown in a container (earthbox) in a heated green house. Even when attempting to contain limiting to 2 stems a stem exceeded 15' even when toped.

New subscriber here. I really enjoyed your video! I found it excellent in teaching quality and videography. No excessive, unnecessary banter or irritating music. Definitely subscribing. I live in the North Willamette Valley in the cascade foothills. I’m growing tomatoes in 7, 10 and 15 gallon black nursery pots on my cement deck. This year I’m trying Sun Gold, San Marzano, Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, , Pink Berkeley Tie Dyed, Kellogg’s breakfast, Pineapple, and Striped Rainbow. The sun-gold I bought has three main well established stems coming from I stem. All of the sun gold plants at this nursery were grown in the same configuration so I thought maybe that’s the way to get the best harvest? Never having grown this variety before I didn’t know what to think. I grew up in northern Puget Sound which isn’t good tomato country and I love home grown tomatoes so when I moved to Oregon and bought my first house with lots of property around it I went hog wild one year and just had a tomato garden. I studied up on varieties from the best experts in the US and picked 45 varieties, 75% of them heirloom. I also grew lots of basil, Anaheim peppers and Walla Walla sweet onions and hard necked purple garlic. I was growing a salsa garden. Needless to say I had a ball that year discovering what I liked. Hands down for flavor alone it was the Suddoth strain pink Brandywine. It carried the largest tomato I had ever grown which was 4 1/2 inches tall, 18 3/4 inches in circumference and I don’t remember the weight but it took up a whole regular sized dinner plate when sliced. It actually had no cracks and was a great shape considering how they often look. I had used the best available liquid tomato fertilizers and tonics recommended by Portland Nursery experts and had installed a drip irrigation system. My garden was at least 7 feet tall in most places and I made the best mild salsa I or any of my friends or family had ever eaten. Some of my friends would just forget the chips and drink the salsa right from the jar. It was the most fun summer and year I had ever had with a garden. I now, many years later , still carry the nickname Tomato Lady from a few friends that actually saw my garden and I don’t think any of my immediate neighbors ever had to buy tomatoes that year because a tomato fairy would leave bags of them on their doorsteps early in the morning at least once a week. I no longer have that property and I’m now relegated to a few feet of space on a deck I will never ever forget that summer.

Sungolds are my absolute favorite! I am not the biggest tomato fan - I like them on sandwiches, but sungolds are the only tomatoes that I'll eat by themselves. SO good! I tried them for the first time this season, so my plant is almost done now, but I got probably 3-4 pounds from one plant, all delicious. It's still producing and is almost 10 feet tall (supported by my deck behind it)! Will definitely be growing these again every year!

Few more questions. This info is so helpful! 1. When you say "I wait for the plants to have 1-2 leaves and an inch tall before putting them in the greenhouse" do you mean you wait for 1-2 true leaves, or the basic leaves that the plants have when they first sprout (cotyledon)? 2. In this video, how many weeks old were the plants when you out them in the greenhouse (from sowing)? 3. I assume you do the same operation for peppers and eggplant. When do you sow your eggplant/pepper seeds? Seeing as though they are a lot more cold-tender than tomatoes?
@CaliforniaGardening9 жыл бұрын
Puff~ 1. I wait for 1-2 true leaves - in tomatoes, they show up quickly, about 2-5 days after the cotyledons show up, if I remember right. 2. I do not exactly remember but when they developed their few true set of leaves they went into the green house. After about 4-6 weeks of growing I set them out. You do not have to be exact but I was buying time as garden already had a lot of winter veggies growing :) 3. Yes same thing for peppers and eggplants but I start them just a bit late (about 15-20 days late) because they thrive in hotter weather

I noticed you keep using peat moss without a wetting agent. When you watered those containers the water seeped out and there was very to no water intake. You will need to use a wetting agent on dry peat moss or else it's hydrophobic. Try this: Get 2 containers using the same soil mix as you have in this video. One container without using a wetting agent and the second with using a wetting agent. Water both.You'll see just by watering, which holds more water in and you can weigh the two containers. Using a wetting agent or a home made wetting agent is crucial for dry peat moss like that or else you are not using peat moss for its true potential which is great water holding abilities.
@jennifern87655 жыл бұрын
Interesting, thanks. I was surprised your mix was peat moss, compost and vermiculite as all three are water holding. I thought you'd need something to aid drainage like perlite or sand?

I haven't grown sungold tomatoes but when I went to my uncle's house last year he had tomatoes that were golden yellow and the sweetest I've ever tasted. I took those seeds and grew them this year. Hola! Thanks for all your videos, you prune the sun gold tomatoes?
@MarinaWilson19589 жыл бұрын
I've never grown them in UK but I'm having huge crops of Moneymaker tomatoes grown on a single cordon. Just waiting for them to turn red. Live all tomatoes whatever ..

the author of the video is growing sungold select which is not a true sungold. tokita seeds company creates the sungold F1 seed then distributors package the seed. i have run out of sungold f1 and am currently looking for a supplier that is packaging the tokita seed, which will definity rule out any ebay/amazon provider. i have saved seed from the f1 and grown out the saved seed, they do not grow true nor taste like the origin F1...there is no replacing true sungold F1. other than that, great video.

But I heard transparent pots are prone to have the roots damaged by direct sunlight. So?
@dasoracle5 жыл бұрын
I've seen people put the transparent cup in a koozie to keep the sun off of them.

can you describe a rough timeline for when you would start seeds/transplant them into larger containers/move them into a greenhouse/harden them off assuming you were trying to get them into the ground ASAP? (not stalling for winter veggies) also specifically for tomatoes, because I know you start peppers and stuff like that a couple weeks later. something like.. mid-january: sow seed indoors on a heat mat mid feb: transplant into larger cups late feb: move into greenhouse.. and so on? thanks!!
@CaliforniaGardening9 жыл бұрын
Puff~ There is no specific timeline but here's a rough guide: January - start seeds indoors. When about 2 leaves appear, move to greenhouse. When a few inches tall, move to larger cups or pots. Then after 4-6 weeks, set them out in the ground. Make sure you keep them under shade outside the greenhouse 2-3 days before planting (to help them adapt outside the greenhouse).

California Gardening Would setting the seeds out in the greenhouse as soon as they sprout (not waiting for two leaves) do the same thing?

Puff~ Yes it would!

Hi , is this variety a determinate plant? Also, by harvesting the fruit before is ripe,do you stimulate the plant to produce more fruits? Thank you
@CaliforniaGardening9 жыл бұрын
El Buitre De Madrid This is an indeterminate variety. And no, by harvesting fruits when not ripe does not stimulate fruit production. Only plants which produce more fruits upon harvest, in my opinion, are peppers. Hope that helps!

Thank you for your prompt replay! Yes it did help. So this plant does not die after the first production of fruit, is that correct? If so, for how long it produces and how many times per year? Thank you
@CaliforniaGardening9 жыл бұрын
El Buitre De Madrid yes it will keep producing fruits till it dies due to cold weather! Once a year, starts fruiting in June and goes up to October!

You need to be more aggressive with pruning, your tomatoes are showing signs of disease quite early on, cut the lower branches early before they get infected and remove leaves as soon as they start to look unhealthy. Tomatoes can be a pain to look after but it pays off to be aggressive to stop the spread of disease and improve aeration by reducing the density of leaves stopping air flow. Try using woodchips on the top of the soil around the base of the plants to reduce the likelyhood pathogens will splash up from the soil when watering (or raining if growing outdoors) and always avoid wetting leaves if possible.

can you save sungold tomato seeds ????/
@CaliforniaGardening8 жыл бұрын
+Ian Melief Not for this variety! There are some heirloom sungold for which you can!
@micheals19924 жыл бұрын
Don't use transparent pots, it encourages algae growth deep into the soil.
