That's why I'm so glad that I witnessed all these events when growing up. From Rex Lawson, I.K Dairo MBE, Tunde Nightingale, Baba Kuti, Ebenezer Obey, Haruna Ishola, Osita Osadebe, Warrior, Nico Mbarga, Dele Abiodun, FESTAC, Udoji, Changing from left hand drive to right. Changing from Pounds Shilling Pence to Naira, too many to list. That was when HONEY used to taste sweet in Nigeria. Unfortunately, Nigeria's best are in the past. Your Parents will testify to this comment. God Bless.

Although I have music in my genes, King Sunny Ade is the reason why I am still deeply involved in music. I have been his fan since 1968. My uncle, Chief John Aderibigbe whom I used to visit in Lagos before I became a student at Metropolitan College in Surulere, Lagos was a close friend and lover of Sunny Ade’s music. He never bought any records other than Sunny’s records. I transferred to Eruwa for the continuation of my secondary school and joined some local juju musicians. They were not playing Sunny’s style. I didn’t like it. I formed my own student band and mimicked Sunny Ade from one record to the other. He remains the only musician that I listen to his music 24/7. He is adorable, stylish and entertaining. May KSA live for another 40 years. I gave up playing music, knowing fully well that I couldn’t detach from Sunny’s style. I reasoned that I could not be a copycat and succeed in music.

Just wanted to give thanks for sharing your experience, and above all your honesty in the final part of your writing. Maybe you could not succeed in music but for sure you are part of music. May all musicians out there had the same clairvoyance as you. I really fell in love with juju, along high life, afro beat and other styles, and i can see not only by the music itself, but also for all the people sharing them experiences here, that this is a real and special type of music, although i can barely understand a word :) . Bless you all.

As a toddler and onwards in the mid 70s, our neighbors were KSA, Chief comnander Obey, Haruna Ishola and Salawa Abeni loyalists, and I was opportuned then to hear and enjoy them. KSA stoid out with Chief commander a close second. I have been hooked ever since.

This is nostalgia to my childhood both here in the UK in the 70s and Lagos when our parents took us to meet the extended family in Lagos. When we heard Juju like Sunny Ade , we knew it meant 'happyjolly' party time. Our families and friends came together to have house parties with their kids. There's laughter , noise, arguments, drinks, food, dancing. We children met up and it was jolly times in 70s London. Then we moved to Lagos and we heard the same music. I enjoyed my childhood because we played on the streets in my neighbourhood of Surulere.

@@olumidearo2568 Surulere was only residential back in the days of its development. Yes, we has corner shops, garage shops but, I've lived both off Adeniran Ogunsanya and at Ojuelegba (Cole Street) areas respectively. They were family-oriented residential areas....no gates on homes, low fences and alit of fruit trees in homes or outside homes. It was never commercial then and kids can wander around from street to street playing...off to our different homes in the evening or when someone is sent to fetch us.

The rich texture of Juju music is a heritage of Nigerian Yoruba culture that should never be allowed to die even as the younger generation of Nigerians have since moved on to newer art forms with closer ties to Westernization. The legacy that the legends like IK Dairo, King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Sir Shina Peters, Segun Adewale and others have left should be preserved into posterity and even integrated by younger artists as they manoeuvre and explore new musical trends. In that regard I have great admiration and respect for young artists like Seun Kuti who have kept the legacy of the celebrated Fela Ransome Kuti alive.

I was born in 1971 but my musical ears were developed enough to cherish KSA music that my childhood ambition was to be a juju musician and likely replace KSA.Today, a medical doctor for over 16 years and the power and beauty of KSA music still produce same effect. It's deeply refreshing and very therapeutic listening to the artistry genius in KSA delivered through these classics particularly those released in the 70's and 80's.

I was working in Lagos when this record came out. Those were the days you could go to three different parties in the night without being moltested by anybody. Imagine walking at about 2.00am from Obalende where Sunny was playing to Onipanu where Obey would be playing and leave for Agege to watch Adeunle or Animashaun playing. Lagos was the best and it is unfortunate that things have changed to the worse now..

Love Juju Music and Sunny Ade. Yet, "ekpen alile" you are so right, so right. Entrenched Corruption has so ravaged a once shinning star of Africa. It is still my home, but the bounty of oil has turned out to be a curse more than a blessing. May be that's we love our music so much, to balm and soothe our aching hearts.

The parts that always move me to tears are from 18:19 to 19:26 when he used the guitar to play the tune 'If I have wings like a dove, I will fly, fly away over the mountain, over the sea where my love waits for me" and when he played from 20:56 to 21:36 the popular Primary School songs of those days " By the bank of Niger River x2. I slept in the night when the moon was so bright, by the bank of Niger river" Those are classic renditions.

To love your tribe is great. use that same energy to respect, appreciate and accept the other tribe. Try to learn and teach while being respectful. OUR TROUBLE IN NIGERIA IS "GOOD TIME" Army, Police, DOCTORS are all taking bribes.Thats the end of a NATION when those three category of citizens are corrupt. CORRUPTION. LACK OF PATRIOTISM,"FUNCTIONAL TYPE OF EDUCATION" and pure barbarism. THATS OUR ONLY HOME. WE ALL MUST PRAY, PRAY, AND PRAY. WE MUST FIX IT. WE MUST.

Lol @kabungwe.... It simply means you now belong in the "old" class. I remember my dad of blessed memory spoke of how he could no longer deal with the nonsense guitar that was brought into the music of their time hence he had to drop music to become a businessman. But we were crazy about the guitar which characterised the emerging juju music. Now it is all about electronic gadgets and "rap nonsense" right? lol. But this time too will pass and the kids of today will wonder what has changed their preferences so much! So, it is very ok to be old school. Thanks to the technology to keep old records. if you live to be very very old, expect more fusions. The human mind will always create new out of old. Try to adapt to the "nonsense" of today. it will get worse. lol. But it is also beautiful and will continue to be so.
@magayusog

Makola Mambo, how does one adapt to nonsense? It's like when people compare good to bad as an example. I truly don't get that at all! But I guess that is human nature!!! Today's music is truly horrible to say the least....bad lyrics, bad instrumentation that all sounds like the same song being repeated over and over again and don't get me started on the voices...it seems everyone can sing now! The videos are even more appalling...nudity in everything...smh!
@MakolaMambo
@MakolaMambo 8 жыл бұрын
o boy! lol. Kabungwe, I sure do feel you! But look at it this way - There is a popular saying I've often heard that "one man's meat is another man's poison". The old creates the new and it will be an unending cycle when the new becomes old. There is actually nothing new under the old sun. We will be much happier if we chose to embrace the changes we cannot avoid. It doesn't hurt really and life will surely continue and luckily nothing seem to get lost anymore. You can always invoke the old spirit from the archives to indulge yourself in the old times. And from that perspective one can safely say we are truly living in a generation of the blessed. So let's enjoy it. Cheers!
