Sunny Day Real Estate live @ Best Friends Forever, Las Vegas NV (October 12, 2024) [complete set]

I never figured that I would ever get the chance to see SDRE live, in the flesh. I still remember picking up 'Diary' and rushing home to listen to it back in the day. But then they broke up before the follow-up was even completed. They've since reformed and gone on hiatus a couple of times. I even had tickets to see them in Milwaukee in the spring of 2023 on their tour with The Appleseed Cast, another favorite, only to be thwarted by a late-season freak snow storm in which the normal 2.5 hour drive from Winnipeg, Canada to Grad Forks ND took me nearly 5 harrowing hours and put me severely behind schedule on a 10-hour drive. The consolation prize was that I had tickets to see Pinback in Minneapolis and Chicago on subsequent nights. So, how very fitting that both Pinback and SDRE were playing at BFF 2024, with SDRE playing 'Diary' in its entirety on the 30th anniversary of its release. Finally, my SDRE wishes fulfilled, all these years in the making.

As an aside, although my instrument is Bass, skilled drummers make me drool with envy with their feats of extreme tetra-dexterity. Will Goldsmith does that to me. In a way, you're all lucky that my sightline was generally obstructed from obsessing over his drumming. But you can literally see it in some of the video footage and my final edit where I stayed focused on him executing some tasty drum heroics behind Dan Hoerner when I could. The rush of the band launching into Seven, the first SDRE song I ever heard, was exhilarating. And hearing the crowd shouting along to the chorus just gave you the feels. Meanwhile, after 'Diary', the encore was just superb. Three of my very fave SDRE songs to close Night Two of the festival. Just sheer perfection.
