Introduction
PVC has properties suitable for making up Ethernet cable jackets, but it also produces toxic smoke and fumes if caught in a fire.
However, cable jackets are not made equally. They have three basic fire ratings: CM, CMR, and CMP.
CM-rated cables are only for general use: patch cables, or cables installed inside the wall where the fire code is not strict.
CMR - rated cables are used between the floors of a multistory building.
CMP-rated cables are better than both CM and CMR. They are the most fire-resistant and should be used in plenum spaces where fire can easily start and spread.
