Great video of Sunnyside. I lived the first 29 years of my life in Sunnyside (lived on 40th street between 47th and 48th avenues) and I am happy that the neighborhood is thriving today. The proximity to Manhattan has always been a plus, but there is much more variety and options today. I have been planning to go there for a day to walk around, as I have not been there in a number of years. Your video has piqued my interest.

Excellent coverage of Sunnyside! After years of living in Manhattan and BK, I found Sunnyside about 4 years ago. I love it. And I’ve rarely had issues with the 7 train. Or getting to other subway lines. Diversity, a slower pace, yet easy to get into Manhattan.

Something cool about Sunnyside is that it has what I believe is NYC's first bike boulevard! Obviously NYC has a lot of bike lanes, but a bike boulevard is a street that is made purposefully calmer so that it's comfortable for folks to ride bikes pretty much anywhere in the street (rather than in a thin lane). The boulevard is 39th Ave, and it was made by lowering the speed limit to 20, and having one block where cars can only travel east and another where they can only travel west, while bikes can travel both directions. This means a driver going west must leave the avenue when they approach the one way east block and vice versa. This slows everybody down. It's cool to see!

Thanks for the fun fact! I didn't know that. NYC can definitely do better for bike commuters.

The downside is that the pedestrians have to be extra careful because a lot of the bikes are running the red lights. I've nearly gotten hit over a dozen times trying to cross the street on my right-of-way light because the bikers don't stop for their red lights and one of my friends actually DID get hit and had to go to the doctor for stitches.
@Jondude11
@Jondude11 Жыл бұрын
@@VixLeu That’s not a reason not to build bike infrastructure though. It’s not as though if they didn’t build it then everyone would follow the rules. I whole heartedly agree bikes should stop at red lights especially to let pedestrians go and to cede the right of way. But I also understand the argument that bikes are kind of in between cars and pedestrians - certainly no one bats an eye at pedestrians jaywalking in NYC and for good reason. Many states have “Idaho stop” laws on the books, where cyclists can treat stop signs like yield signs and red lights like stop signs (giving right of way to pedestrians and other road users who have right of way of course). Perhaps something like that would be a happy medium. I also agree that likely even with rules like that many cyclists wouldn’t follow them. But many drivers also do not follow laws too like rolling through stop signs, regularly speeding, right turns on red, but they don’t seem to be the target of the same vitriol as cyclists
@WeibenWang
@WeibenWang Жыл бұрын
Whatever the perception of bikes and their rule breaking, the fact still remains that bike lanes, and the presence of bikes in general, make the streets safer for all street users, including pedestrians and people in cars. Crash and injury rates go down in pretty much every instance.

A few things. The Farmer's market is small and only open on Saturdays. The cemetery is huge, with lots of wide and clean paths that are great for biking, walking, jogging. I really like it here. My main complaint is the lack of public park space. For that you need to travel outside the neighborhood.

I considered moving to Sunnyside before deciding on Astoria when looking for my first apartment years ago. I would have picked either, and I couldn't decide initially until I found a much cheaper apartment in Astoria close to the subway. Both are walkable neighborhoods with access to most things I need, and midtown Manhattan is just a 10-minute subway ride. Two things that Astoria has over Sunnyside are the waterfront and Astoria Park.

One of my favorite pizzerias, Philomena’s, is in Sunnyside. The 7 trains are also color coordinated. Red Diamond signifies an express while a Green Circle signifies a local. I have a relative buried in First Cavalry. If I’m not mistaken, Vito’s burial scene in Godfather 1 was shot at Calvary cemetery.

I've heard folks complain about 7 train service shutdowns due to maintenance. I believe that ended this month, though. The rest of the time, at least the express and local tracks allow for some redundancy in the event of train problems.

I love this video! Have been living in Sunnyside for the past 2 years and absolutely love it. Small town feel but city vibes is the best way to explain it I think. Although it’s getting more and more expensive and I don’t think I’ll be able to afford it come next lease renewal 😫😫 but anyway I love the walkability and reliability of the train. There are some delays here and there but the overall I can get to where I need to be pretty efficiently without minor headaches most days. It’s when I transfer trains that I run into problems. Totally recommend living in Sunnyside 😊😊☀️

side rant on talking about the 7 Train: People like doing this move where they take the Express, and get off to transfer to a local train for one or two stops, in attempt to save time on commute. However in my many years of taking the 7 train, doing this at certain times of day is a waste of time, because the local train people wait for at the express stop ends up being the one that people let pass by waiting for the express

Sunnyside has more Square footage for the price, clean, no junkies and kids actually go Trick or Treating on Halloween. It's like living in Jersey with all the city perks. You wont see people outside after 10pm because people work. I was gonna pick Astoria , but it's loud and dirty plus the apartments are way smaller. No real nightlife more of a family area, but you have everything cool in Manhattan and Brooklyn by a 15min by Uber. Paying $1700 for a 1-BR 780 sqft renovated apartment in 2023 so deals can be found if you walk the neighborhood and talk to supers besides looking at websites that are looking for $2300. As someone born and raised Uptown the peace is so appreciated. Sunnyside is a Gem.

Sunnyside’s industrial area is depressing to look at while on the 7. It’s two areas, north side after 39th Street; south side after 37th Street But the residential area with stores are really nice.
