This was the first lick I ever heard from the Empress of FUNK while blasting Soul Train on Saturday afternoon when I was 10 years old. It completely blew my mind. I wore out 3 copies of this Rufus album on vinyl. Peace, and Respect Miss Khan, the grooviest person I have ever experienced ✌️🎗️⚓

1976... That is what this album reminds me of.. My Mom bought it, and played it constantly! Our neighbor downstairs was also playing it, often at the same time. Everytime I hear any of these songs, I'm instantly transported back to that time.

It's all over the industry. Everybody has rights to some kind of fee collection now a days. I'm a retired pro dancer (ballet, modern, tap, etc), tried my luck on B'way. It's crazy there too. Once you got your union card, certain stages could you perform on or not. Blew my hair back I tell ya! I as a performer had to be very careful as to where and with whom I performed, go figure. On the other hand I appreciate unions. I was taking care of and protected during my journeys ;-)

@BeccaTilley , A few artist comes to mind that pushed the envelope. James Brown (American Bandstand & Soul Train), DiscoTex & Sex-O-Lettes fea Sir Monte Rock III (American Bandstand). Such demands forced the industry to change rules and even lessen fees. Midnight Special & Don Kirshners Rock Concerts helped usher in actually LIVE performances.

@BeccaTilley, Back in that era, due to union rules (ASCAP/BMI/FCC) and the likes, didn't allow LIVE performances (singing or playing of an instrument to be broadcast on television. It would cost the said production company extra fees that were very steep. To paraphrase reaction from some artist, "If you want to hear a lip synce, then buy/listen to record. A live performance is supposed to be LIVE...).

@BeccaTilley, due to union rules at he time ASCAP/BMI/ and the like etc, mostly all televised performances were lip synced or canned if you will, to illiminate finacial obligations of a said production company. during that period there have been a few artist who refused to perform under such conditions. Seems the attitude from performers was, "if you want a lip synced performance, then listen to the record. My live performance is just that, LIVE..." to paraphrase.
@davekingpt10 жыл бұрын
A question on lip synching. I always assumed the artist was actually singing but the mike was off. Yes? I think I would get lost and not move my lips right if I didn't make a sound.

@BeccaTilley , it's gotten a little better for artist today but not much. It's so political/business like. I don't know it you watch ABC's The View, but many times the host(s) cut off or warn a guest who may try to sing a lyric for fun ( a simple Happy Birthday, etc) because their production company would now have to pay a fee for that lyric being sung on TV. Wild isn't it lol? Since you are studying the music field, ask your professors about such union crap.

@@JeffmChicago At the Knebworth Festival in 1976 the stage setup was that logo. The tongue extended out into the crowd from the stage and Lynyrd Skynyrd was told not to use the runway that was for the RS use only.
