55 gallon barrel with aquarium heater or bird bath heater . Connected to a rain catch and faucet hose . Also an air bubbler. With a aquarium pump to also circulate it around . Works in hot weather or cold.

I like the idea of a 55 gallon barrel. However, would an aquarium heater be enough to keep it from freezing? Do you have experience doing this?

I have the same system, but I use a fish tank heater that I bought on Amazon for less than 10 dollars and it works perfectly in the cold Utah winters.

Good morning. I'm a first-time watcher to your channel. I like your personality and your can-do attitude. I've had chickens 2 years but this is the first year the water froze due to the Arctic blast which hit the southern part of the US. I think the cheapest and easiest way to heat the water is to put it in a bucket, sit the bucket on top of bricks and Lee heating pad under the bucket over the bricks. Connect to a solar generator. You may need to recharge the solar generator inside if not enough sun light. I bought my solar generator for just over $200 but that's my emergency generator when the power goes out. If you already have a solar generator then all you need is a $12 heating pad and big bucket.

Another option is use a bird bath heater on a large rubber water basen for livestock, drill a 3/8" hole 3 to 4 inches down from the top of a 5 gal bucket with a lid, flip it over in basen on top of heater. I used 2 gal bucket with a can of sand and light bulb under the regular 1 gal waterer.

Outdoor rated and 12ga wire size. Anything smaller in wire size like 14 or 16 or will be to small and trip breakers. I run about 200ft of 12ga on a 15amp breaker and that takes care of two 150watt heat lamps and one heated 1gal water bowel 👍👍

Has anyone tried this with water cups in a bucket instead of nipples? I'm concerned about them freezing on the outside of the bucket, but would love to adapt what I already have instead of making something new. Zone 4a, we see weeks of below freezing temps
@MKD-dd6ng2 жыл бұрын
I would honestly say it wouldn't work. The water is so little in the cups that it would get cold quickly no matter how warm the bucket was. It's easy to replace those cups with nipples. Sane size screw on area. I would just order them and save the hassle. Hope this helps. 🙂💧🐓🦃💧🐥🦆💧
@JmarieD2 жыл бұрын
I'm on here searching idea for this very reason. There was an ice crust in the tank but the nipples were frozen solid this morning. I thought about pouring warm water over them but that didn't seem wise. Figured it would increase the chances of breakage and also leave the chickens walking in freezing water.

Hi Mike ! - That snowstorm looks promising ! Does that mean a new Kubota snow video coming this week ? I hope so ! 😁 P.S. - what are those little slits on the bottom of that heater ? I'v never seen something like this. I thought those were air vents, and that the thing would sit under the bucket, so I guess they are not air vents, and that thing is water-tight.

I looked up the "Perfect Bucket Heater" and they, too, don't say how hot it gets. It says it uses "only" 80 watts, which could mean the water, especially as it goes down to 2 or 3 gallons, could get really really hot coffee hot. Doesn't it?
