I was talking about this to my mom today. We're from Brazil and people have had some prejudice about thifting, but it's been changing now. I told her they're probably gonna start raising the prices because people are looking for it, just like what happened with copy/counterfeit pieces. You'd pay 20 bucks for fake sneakers, today you don't find a pair that originally costs like 1k for less then 300...it's ridiculous and revolting...(I'm not in favor of fake pieces, but brought them as a comparison)

There is an interesting saying in France that says “we’re not rich enough to buy poor quality” and companies like Temu or SHEIN actually destroyed that mindset of owning one good thing vs. 10 shitty ones. There’s some thinking to be done on actual savings you make by over consuming shitty products you need to repurchase often rather than one that’ll last you a lifetime. Over consumerism is not even a rich way of life, the rich wants us to over consume, so they can get the good stuff. Also rich people have mansion to fill, do you need this much crap in your 1,000sqft home? I’m on a rant as I already commented but these companies piss me off pretty bad.

My parents always told me growing up to splurge on things that will last, and I try to live by that as an adult. My dad took me to the grill section of home depot as a kid and asked which grill I think he should buy. I told him the least expensive one and he pointed to the one next to it that costed $100 more but had double the warranty and free repairs.

The Scentbird CEO contoversy has become such a big deal because so many of the creators who did endorsement deals with the brand are largely creators who cover things like MLMs and influencer grifts. So it was especially jarring when these clips surfaced- both for the offensive content they contained but also for the revelation that she had her hand in similar predatory business practices to those regularly called out by anti mlm/anti grift commentary creators. Mariya is not a spiritual guru, she is a spirirtual grifter.

I work in a health care lab and honestly, the number of skin cancers we see removed from people aged 55 and over is crazy! I'm really interested in seeing what happens to the rates of skin cancer over the next 20-30 years as different generations have different attitudes to sun exposure and sunscreen use. Also, if someone could make a sunscreen that doesn't turn all my white t-shirts yellow around the neckline, that would be great.

I’m well over 55 and have been very sun protection conscious since my mid twenties. Of course sunscreens have improved over the years but even so I’m naturally fairly pale and live in a sunny climate. Even being very careful, while I’ve never had cancer I get actinic keratoses (sp?) removed on a regular basis so I’m not sure people who live relatively close to the equator will get a massive dropoff. Protection is still totally worth it of course. Instead of staying inside, think hats and breathable protective fabrics partnered with sunscreen.

I’m 61, born before there was anything stronger than SPF8. I spent from 17 to 24 teaching swimming lessons, lifeguarding, and as a camp counselor/sailing instructor. As soon as “real sunscreen “came along, I started using it. I make sure my make up always has it. I have the skin of a 45-year-old. People can’t believe my age when I tell them! I’m not afraid of the sun. I’m a scuba diver , love to be outside, especially spending time at the beach. I live in Texas, so there’s lots of long warm/hot days here. It's the exact same factories that produce them. And all brands that have physical stores, too - like H&M, Zara, etc. It's basically like groceries - same thing, different packaging and price due to longer logistic chain, marketing and profit margin. The difference is that H&M, Zara, etc have distributors and physical stores in countries with service-based economy (aka the rich countries) and possibly equity quotas, which is what increases their score compared to Temu, Wish, etc where that portion of the logistic chain doesn't exist.

It doesn’t turn red immediately but it definitely shows what sun exposure does to my body. So people, especially those who are prone to sensitivity due to their medication, should start taking it seriously! P.S. Sorry, English isn’t my native language((

I have a family history of melanoma, it killed my maternal uncle and grandfather as well as my now 3.5 yr old nephew having it at just 2.5 yrs old. Nope, I don't mess around with it. On the topic of "sunxiety" I can just bring my own experience - which I briefly mentioned on IG in a post's comments. I'm prone to getting melanomas and for a few years I observed this pattern in their devolepment: I used to spend the summer going to the beach (I live by the sea, pretty normal) then in Autumn I did my regular moles' check up and one (or two) turned out to be a melanomas, I had them removed during the Winter holidays and restart the cycle the following year... it happened for 4 years, after that I decided to avoid going to the beach altogheter, wearing sunscreen even in Winter and all over the body, reapplying it multiple times a day, and guess what? I haven't got any new melanoma since! I know my case is not really common but people should simply be more aware of how their body could potentially react and get damaged

Last Saturday I went to a thrift store and grabbed a hoodie. I couldn't find the label that fast and decided to just "wing it". At the register the woman said "would you be ok with 8 nzd?" Which I don't mind. The thrift shop profit goes to ambulance support here in NZ. But when she found the label on the side and saw "Shein" she reduced it herself to 6 nzd 😂 I didn't hear it properly so had to check the label when leaving the shop, and then the light bulb in my head turned on and I had to laugh so much. Clearly she is not impressed by Shein. I'm going to wear it in a packing shed at the farm so I don't mind. That's the first Shein item I now own, and it's going to be worn and covered in dust anyway. I have literally had someone call me a 'white-guilt sympathizer' because i don't like that sweatshops use child labor of children who are more than likely from 3rd world countries. people like cheap clothes so much they'd rather insult and degrade someone for being uncomfortable with racism and child abuse just so they don't run the risk of losing their ability to buy 40 shirts for 100 dollars. we genuinely need to reevaluate our values as a society because it's getting absolutely mental out here.

I'd be interested to know how age range changes feelings of "sunxiety." I'm 62, which means when I was a teenager, summertime in Midwest USA meant taking my radio, big towel, sunglasses and a good book and lying out in the back yard. The goal at that time was to be as tan and dark as possible. I don't know if sunscreen even existed at that time, but if it did, my friends and I certainly didn't use it. We put lemon juice and/or hydrogen peroxide (or Sun-In, if you were bougie) in our hair to give it lighter streaks. And we wore suntan lotion to encourage the sun to make us as dark as possible. Hawaiian Tropic, Coppertone or straight up slathered ourselves in pure baby oil. We laid there, in full sun, in our bathing suits, checking for tan lines every 15-20 minutes. We were completely relaxed and sought the sun like sunflowers do. Do I have sun damage now? Yes, of course I do. I'm the age of an ignorant generation of sun worshippers. We simply didn't really know. But while you won't catch me outside in the summer now, it's mostly because the average temperature in my area during the summer is "gates of hell" hot. So I don't have sunxiety in the same way, I just hate being hot. I'd be interested to know if other people in my demographic became afraid of the sun or kept up their complete relaxation in it. And why they feel the way they do.

It's also interesting to note that UV radiation levels have increased, so it's easier to burn more intensely now compared with 50 years ago. In Australia "over the last twenty years, there has been an overall annual increase in UV levels across the country from to 2% to 6% above the 1970-1980 levels, corresponding to ozone depletion... Overall skin cancer rates have increased over the past 20 years, despite reductions in melanoma incidence rates for younger generations who grew up with the SunSmart messages. The impact of the current higher UV levels on skin cancer rates will take 20-25 years to become apparent, given the time lag that exists for skin cancer to develop, however our message is that prevention is better than cure".

We had sunscreenin the 70's. i grew up in CA and depending where i was tanning, swimming, biking, determined how fast my skin would tan or possibly burn. Lived in a county that was sea level never had sunburn, Moved to a mountain county w/ freshwater lake level at 6000 ft, first sunburn at this location.. Since my teens 1974 I used a facial moisturizer estee lauder or Lancome daily as a late teen till now w/ a spf 15 or 30. I used to use for body/outdoor sports Bain de Soleil sp4 orange gel or their oil which was a spf 6 when it was no longer available in USA Hawaiian tropic dark tanning oil with the lowest spf I can get. My dermatologist told me years ago your DNA / Genetics plays a huge role in skin cancer along with diet and enviorment. If you have a very pale snow white complexion you are just more prone to skin cancer and should be applying and reapplying SPF. As far as aging your skin changes look again at your genetics it really plays a major role and vices like drugs and alcohol do as well.

Same (Florida 100 degrees atm). And whenever I see people working primarily outdoors in 100 degree heat for hours at a time (such as landscapers or construction workers), I wonder if they’re super human. I legit can’t do that without fainting and burning, yes even with reapplying high of sunscreen every hour. I attempted to go to the zoo yesterday because my kid wanted to go, and must’ve spent about $50 alone trying to keep cool with things like snow cones until I gave up and left early. I actually did end up only the ER in the past from fainting from heat exhaustion just walking to class between buildings on my college campus. I’m seriously making plans to move up north because I can’t take it anymore. I’m not ginger, but I am a “Snow White” with black hair and literal snow white transparent skin. I wish some of that melanin in my hair would’ve made itself to my skin instead so that I can handle the summer.

My colleagues wanted to buy a dress from Shein for the prom in the school we work in. I had my doubts. When I found out about the price of the dress and the fabric (expensive price for a piece of crap) I said no. Everyone else bought it. I got a very nice dress twice the price that was very similar to the other dress, much better and softer fabric (cotton and also a lining layer), buttons, elastic and flowy sleeves. I have actually worn that dress again just this past week. The dress they bought was made of a stiff polyester fabric, the skirt had no shape and the top crushed their chest in an uncomfortable way, the sleeves were gigantic and just didn't look like a dress you could wear again for a formal event, not even a casual one. One of my colleagues said that she would not wear that dress again, and another one sold it even before the prom. I hate Shein.

My main issue with being insane over SPF, and limiting outdoor time is health related. My depression goes through the roof when I'm outside during peak sun times. Even with SPF50 PA++++ slathered until it feels like mud, I have patches of rashing that happens. I used this "clean" bath and body care set including sanitiser for a few months(it was a gift, and I don't think they knew either), and didn't know that the amount of extracts and fragrance listed was enough to trigger issues later. The allergy specialist said that it raised my mild photosensitivity levels to a mild sun allergy, and it will probably take a year or two IF I limit myself, and if I do things like UV nails, cover up my skin or make press-ons, and limit sun exposure to the minimum time my SPF can function without reapplying. So when I take walks or walk a family friends doggo, it's early morning or late evening when it is not super sunny. Regarding that perfume subscription place, I lost interest when they changed over to those stupid leaky cases, so hearing this, I'm definitely not going back. I have been supporting small indie perfumers, and wear handmade scent jewellery, or non-reactive metal lockets.

My favorite activity is upcycling. I'll go to a thrift store and find clothes, jewelry and plushies that I can then take home and either restore them, modify them, or take them apart for new projects. I'll pull apart a necklace and re-use the materials to make new jewelry, or I'll take a T-shirt and sew it into a tank top. My favorite projects are the plushies though. I like finding the ones that are really down on their luck, missing eyes, ears, fur that just needs a thorough cleaning, and I'll restore them to the best of my ability and give them to kids. It's a hobby, but one that I enjoy doing, knowing that the efforts I put toward them are giving them a second life and reducing the landfill in some small part.

I think it's really interesting how I see both sides of the Shein/Temu/Fast Fashion argument. Some countries don't have thrift shops or second hand shops and people can't afford clothes or other home items because the economy is fucked. I've bought from Shein before and I haven't had bad experiences with it especially when I didn't have any clothes cause they were all old and had holes in them. But I've known people personally that have had bad experiences with it too. I've only ever bought things I need and all the clothes I've bought I've worn for years and it hasn't broken. I think that in the end of the day these companies need to be held accountable instead of the people participating in buying their products. Because even high quality luxury brands are even worse than Shein or other fast fashion brand. Many luxury items are one use items to then be thrown in a landfill by designs despite the luxurious good quality materials used or the way the people that made it were paid. The exact electronic device you're watching this video on was probably made by slave and children labor from Congo where most of the world get the ingredients for companies that make batteries and cellphones such as brands like iPhone. It's not us the consumers most of the time but these corporations. So I will never judge someone buying from them cause I don't know their situation or livelihood status.

@@bisexualantigone Mmh! It's important to see the economical status of most of the people participating in fast fashion. In my country most of the population is under the poverty line. I'm right above the line barely hanging in there. I can't move out of my childhood home because I cannot even afford a studio apartment. Much less can I afford clothes so I use my clothes until they're old, wrinkly and have holes. I recently bought from Shein because it's affordable and I cannot afford anything else. I went to Walmart and one dress was $30. I do not have thrift stores or second hand stores in my country. I did what I could with the resources I'm granted. People criticize Shein and Temu but if you look at popular brands like Nike, Gucci, H&M, etc. They also use sweatshops. Where can I buy ethical and morally correct clothes at that point? And that it doesn't cost me $60-80 one shirt.

I think that's part of the reason they feel more accessible to a lot of people. I do have sun anxiety. I agree with it feeling like someone touching you without permission. I call it a “loud” feeling. Like when your socks are messed up or you have a bug bite. But in terms of skincare for me the fear comes from the fact that I wear makeup and I know 100% I will not be reapplying sunscreen on a daily basis. I wear sunscreen everyday and have since I was 18. My skin is in good condition. But because I wear makeup almost every day…I do not reapply. There’s not a good way to do so without starting all the way over and I’m definitely not doing that. So I wear hats and stay in the shade and do not go in the sun. If I’m doing outdoor activities then I don’t wear makeup other than maybe mascara and cream blush so I can reapply sunscreen.

So far it’s worked in my favour: ppl tell me I look younger than my actual age, but I also understand that you DO still need to live life, so I try.

Thank you for addressing the racist pay gap for content creators, unsurprising but good at least to have stats to back it up. Worrying that the pay gap between black and white creators is increasing, and really quickly at that! Gonna go look up that report to see if they looked into why, but also interested in anyone's input on the topic

Love you talking about the sun anxiety thing I wear sunscreen everyday but I definitely feel worried when I’m out in it

i have a bit of sunxiety mostly because, as someone who doesnt drive, i get a LOT of uv exposure. my commute is a 45 minute walk one direction so a tan is inevitable every summer. i dont even have a locker at work anymore to keep an extra sunscreen there and my purse is not big enough to lug one around along with everything else i need for my day (larger bags are even against company policy) so yes i am anxious walking home from work unprotected in direct sunlight for 45 minutes because city planners forget trees exist. of course a little consideration for pedestrians by like. anyone in charge of anything at all. would solve this problem but i have little doubt i will ever experience that in a meaningful way.

For me, i am personally quite allergic to all chemical sunscreens. I can only wear mineral only and for some reason where i live the only mineral sunscreens i can get are just a thick white paste that never rubs in that costs more than a standard bottle, or for a significantly larger charge you can get some more sheer mineral ones but its so expensive and the bottles are so small its genuinely just not realistic for me to be able to wear spf everyday right now until something changes in the technology we have. It gives me a lot of anxiety going out in the sun for too long because i can't protect myself other than covering up and staying inside

Never purchased from temu, SHEIN or Skims and use sunscreen but lack reapplication throughout the day

As an Aussie, please caveat statements about not needing to wear sunscreen daily. It is an ABSOLUTE necessity here given our exposure to the ozone layer hole. Like, just remember not everywhere is the U.K re: sun safety.

I watched just yesterday a video about that crazy, scammy Scentbird CEO. I was speechless! I hope people are not going to fall for that sh*t.

I have commented on Hannah Alonzo’s videos about her sponsorships with them and she has never once replied. That was kind of disappointing.

@@christinescott5002 For what it's worth, a lot of content creators are locked into contracts with these companies, so it might not be as simple as just "stopping" without causing a major legal issue for themselves.

Doctor’s advice for me was to get sunscreen with the highest fps. 20 to 30% is too low and you’ll get sunburnt anyway. Just general high numbers rub it in where you can. After every couple of hours reapply as directed. Etc.

i don't have sunxiety as much as i have heatxiety lol. my problem with any sunscreen is that i soon as i step out in the summer heat (i live in NYC and it's muggy as hell) i perspire so so much that it immediately all comes off. but i still put in on... i just go from shady spot to shady spot and try to come back indoors asap. // i signed up with scentbird, trying to find a new perfume. after learning about their founders, I WILL be canceling!

On the topic of suncream. I lost my mum to eye melanoma. The year we found out she had eye cancer it was the year she went on holiday to Spain in August and didn’t wear her sunglasses. So it’s not just suncream that is important to wear but sunglasses to. Keep yourself safe guys ❤
