An area halfway between the coast and the mountains, Arroyo de la Miel is one of the three towns in the Benalmádena municipality, together with the town centre, Benalmádena Pueblo, in the mountains, and the part of the town on the coast, Benalmádena Costa.
Although the towns have grown so much that it is hard to see where one finishes and where the next one begins, they still have specific features that identify them.
The name Arroyo de la Miel ("Honey Stream") is due to the fact that many honeycombs used to exist there during the time of the Christian Reconquest, in an area that is characterized by its hills and where the torrents and streams flow.
The main urban development took place in the beginning of the 20th century, after the coast railway from Fuengirola to Málaga was built.
And thanks to the tourism boom in the 1960s, the population in the area increased and this transformed the cluster of farmhouses of Arroyo de la Miel into one of the largest towns in the area.
