Sunset Serving Tray from Scrap Wood -- Woodworking

I finally made a set of plans for this project!! www.almfab.com/store/p/sunset...
In this video, I go through my scrap bin and make a serving tray.
With the variety of wood scraps I had on hand, I was able to create this sunset design going from dark earthy tones of walnut, rosewood, wenge, and padauk to bright golden tones of oak, poplar and maple.
DIY TIP: the more exotic woods were pulled from free bins outside of carpentry shops in my neighborhood.
I decided to make the various woods continue across the full length of tray and up the sides. Having this continuous grain through the handles, weakens them a bit, but trust me after hours of sanding this piece, it's plenty strong, and I think worth it for the sake of design.
This tray was made for my mom for her birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM! Your the best mom I could ask for!

I first watched this in 2018 and before I had ever made a tray. After watching 3 times and seeing the wonderful reaction from his mother, I made one as a test unit, gave it to a dear friend as a gift and she loved it. Then made a tray with all the different colors as a memorial to our daughter who we lost to cancer. Since that time I have made many trays in this style and different styles. Some were gifts, some sold, but it was this video that taught me and pushed me on to make them and increase my woodworking abilities. Thank you so much Michael.

Awesome colours - Love it! Just a tip - when making the handle - drill the 2 far sides with the forstner bits then use a jigsaw and finish up with some sanding - will be much faster!

What did you use for a finish?

@@donmolinari7476 because there’s a chance of it being around food, I typically use a cutting board oil and finish with a coat of wax. But pretty much once any finish cures, it’s food safe.
