“As you can see we have five mics on the snare. We have a MD 441 on the top of the snare facing the center, a Coles 4037 Ribbon microphone on the side, and an SM57 on the bottom. We actually put a Neuman u47 inside the shell to simultaneously capture the low-end and transiences as well. You can also see here we have a piezo pickup taped to the side of the shell for... tone. Now if you walk with me, you’ll see we have two room mics, Neuman u67’s to be exact. Keep walking into the hallway, we’ve also got ourselves some unnamed and rare Japanese stereoscopic cardioid condensers to enhance the natural reverb of the kit. That’s right, keep walking! Outside of the studio we have an AKG D12 resting on the ground, really capturing the mellowness of the toms and kick that resonate even beyond the confined walls of the studio.” jokes aside, this was really informative lol

Great to see such a detailed walk-through. I especially appreciate some of those little insights and techniques that you've picked up along the way; avoiding the "basketball kick" sound, floor and wall reflection mics, and eq preferences. That scenario looks like quite the perfect storm for great drum tracks!

Produce Like A Pro Warren hope you are having a marvelous day. No one is teaching tracking on youtube we are over saturated with mixing tutorials but no one is teaching the tracking side of things in such a professional manner. I think showing how you go about tracking is great and as we all know tracking is the the most important part of the recording process because if you screw that up there no way to fix bad tracking in the mix. So Great job and can't wait to see more.

Such a great video. Disheartening for those of us trying to start a budget studio. Wonder how close of a sound could be achieved with similar style but lower priced mics. You can easily see why studios can charge what they do. The equipment on top of the construction technology that goes into a professional recording studio is astounding. So thankful for Warren and these videos.

I've watch all of your videos thank you for your time and effort. My favorite videos are your drum set up videos where you show the mic'ing then go down the console sharing your eq/signal chains. I've watched/listened to 3 drum set up videos back to back. Sunset Sound Studio- United Studio- Hybrid Studio- I know there are many factors that come into play for the difference in sound, the drummer, room, drums, mics, pre's, eq's, comps, monitors, monitors, etc... The Sunset Sound Studio Drums are amazing and my personal favorite. They all sound great but those Sunset Drums are something really special. That sunset console with that room is really unbelievable. The 414 talkback mic could be used alone with the right song and it would be perfect. Thanks Warren!

Looks like a great place to work! Brilliant use of their console and mics, Warren! The "low" mono was great! I also thought the Coles kick added a lot of pillow and smack that was lacking in the other two mics. I think it would've sounded a little too thin and not puffy enough without it. The final mix sounded great! I love the way the API EQ both enriches the signal as you sculp out the tone AND adds a subtle transient compression/snap that gives it a spanky sound that will really require minimal processing in the mix.

This is incredible work Warren and thank's for sharing. I see mic's there I own that you use. AKG D112 I have difficult to get any good sound from, but I will certenly try some more now.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter Martinsson thanks for the great question. Yes I have found the D112 sounds best inside the kick, also with the kick deadened a little and the low miss taken out, 60Hz boosted and a little top end boost for attack. The D112 to me is not a mic I use to create a natural sounding kick, but more of a Rock, aggressive kick sound, I typically blend it with the other kick mics. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren.

A very instructive and valuable video, Warren. Thank you for sharing this. I do not agree on everything, tend to remove the SM57s out of any recording equation, but in the end the dry sound going to and straight coming of these tracks is amazing! And that is all what counts in the end. Thanks again and looking forward to see more microphone placement videos!

I just do not like their distortion and coloratiin and lack of definition and tend to do everything with condensers and/or ribbons, but if that is just what you are looking for, why not go ahead with these old school dynamics.

@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 9 жыл бұрын
Hi gospodruma thanks for the great question! I like to use a great combination of mics when in a room as fantastic as Sunset Sound. In the mix (depending on the song) I might use a pair of room mics then add just the kick and snare or for drier tones no room mics at all. I love having choices when mixing. I hope that helps. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren.

Really interesting to see those Room Mics you placed, particularly the floor and wall facing ones. I've never seen or used that technique before, probably because I've never used a truly great sounding studio to record in, but it was an amazing effect when you played them in the mix.. It made the drums so much more natural and present sounding. Fantastic tips as always.. Cheers Warren!

Hi ibanezman04 thanks ever so much! Yes agreed these techniques obviously work best in a larger room and I don't employ them at my own studio. If you watch my video with Greg D'Angelo kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3TKcqKfpNGVitk you can see how I record drums here at my own Studio. Thanks very much for watching, have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren

This video is gold, great content Warren. Quick question: the 2 mics that you use for the hihats, do you use a special double mic clip or are they joined together with only rubber bands?

Amazing video, and an equally amazing sound. Warren, I would love if you would do a video around tracking a band LIVE in the studio, and ways you deal with bleed, how your micing arrangements may change, and tips and tricks for getting clean, yet vibey recordings! I, along with many others are trying to do more and more WHOLE BAND recording sessions and would love to hear your tips surrounding the subject... for instance, interested to hear how you would deal with drums in that scenario.

This is a great video. I've watched it at least 4 times. I have a question. Are you doing any kind of low cut directly on your OH mics?

This is one of the more unique videos about recording drums. This was quite eye opening. obviously I wish I had all those mics but I am thinking of some other ways to do this when I have the time and the artist who has the budget for all day drums. I would love to see what you would make out of the live room I use. Thanks for the video, Really incredible.

Hi Bscaggs13 thanks very much! Agreed even if we don;t have all of these mics we can still apply the techniques! My own studio has quite a small live drum tracking room! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Watching this again. The three soloed up room mics could be the drum sound.

Warren, this is great! Thanks for the lesson, I’ll be rethinking the use of ribbon mics on the kick in the future. I’ll be recording a rock/ punk rock band soon & using pencil mics for overheads. Any thoughts on placement? Narrow/wide? Aimed at toms? Distance from snare etc. TIA. Also the room mics were phenomenal in this video- definitely be using this thought process.

Hi Warren... Thank you for sharing your technics on recording drums. Not every one shows this amount of detail. Is there a way we can get that drum session to tweak it ourselves for educational purposes? I think i know the answer but it is worth the try.

After watching this, definitely going to experiment with "low overhead" mics pointing to the floor. Such a full and lovely sound.

Hi , hope you're doing marvellously well , stuck down in the man cave during lock down with a bunch of drums collected over the years and a selection of microphones , and bingeing on your videos . I am getting great top end sounds but I am not getting the kick sounding the way I hear it when I am sitting in the driver's seat giving it some . Recently I have been getting back into playing with the Reso head on and no hole , loving the ' air ' . At the moment I am using a 20 in 60s Japanese Gretsch rip called DIA Deluxe , and I love the sound , very Al Jackson , rather than John Bonham , but I'm just not getting the biff to tape . I have a couple of 1960s 22 in Ludwigs , so I am going to try them next . Love yer vids , the DIA kit is very much like your home studio Ludwigs , 20 in kick , 12 x 8 rack and 14 x 14 floor . I use my 70s Luddie Supraphonic for everything . Btw . The massive kick has a Tama logo on the front, but the nicely patina'd white marine pearl wrap , the fittings and the keystone badge scream ' Ludwig ' , what gives ?

Hi great information on mic placement, and which mic are best suited. Its nice to get this hands on view of things. Thanks for these vidios.. I have a question on bedroom home recording for guitar. I built myself a sound isolation cabinet to house my 50 watt 2x12 cabinet, as the volume levels are just to loud to play a cranked marshall amp for my van halen tone. What is the best way to mic a 2x12? Do I use one mic or 2? Also lastly is what would you recommend for a home use mixer console, so I can pan all my channels and listen to my performance through head phones? I want to play at 12:00 at night, and not wake my famly.
