Sunshine 3020 Shopping Centre - circa 1975
Go back in time and revisit the Sunshine shopping Centre from 1975. This film was taken by my father in 1975 using a Super 8 film camera.
Film Highlights:
0:01 - video starts with the CLARKE STREET shops. We can see TARGET, COLES and SAFEWAY. My father would have been standing close to Withers St when filming.
0:19 - closeup of TARGET and shoppers.
0:27 - HAMPSHIRE ROAD - north end showing AGC Finance, AUTO shop, CHEMIST SHOP, RULES WOOL shop, CLIFTONS SHOEMART
0:44 - John Kontek Real Estate agency on the corner of Hampshire & Devonshire Roads.
0:50 - HAMPSHIRE ROAD (the other side) showing NEW WORLD SUPERMARKET (Dickens), FOSSEYS, MAPLES and WOOLWORTHS.
1:28 - The STATE BANK OF VICTORIA building on the corner of Hampshire & Devonshire Roads. Later became the Commonwealth Bank when the State Bank went broke!
1:40 - the top end of Hampshire Road facing North.
2:01 - Tuckers Quality Meats
2:02 - a red bus (Sitches ??) passes by.
2:05 - ANZ Bank
2:07 - DICKSON ST - a bank sign can be seen (not sure which bank), SUNSHINE MOWER SHOP can just be seen on the very right.
2:09 - back to Hampshire Road - COLES can be seen.
2:11 - a bottle shop can be see with a VICKERS GIN sign and COURAGE DRAUGHT sign below.
2:18 - COMMONWEALTH BANKING CORPORATION - the original CommBANK!
Produced with CyberLink PowerDirector 10

One time when I wasn't 10 years old yet, we shopped there in Fosseys. My mother bought me a light blue quilted parka jacket. I still remember it. Later on, we passed it on to my cousin in NSW. I am 60 now. How the years fly. It seems like yesterday to me. Life was so simple then. We lived in Seddon back then.

Attended sunshine tech back in the late 60's, lived in Devonshire road. So many memories. Moved away in 72 but all the stores and the, at the time, not so old cars. Wonder why all the old clips of Melbourne are showing up in my feed. Better and safer times. We never locked our house, Never locked the car. Literally, just drop the keys on the car floor and go about our business. Times really have changed. The house is locked up like fort Knox, alarm, cctv everything and people are still invaded and robbed.

Yes a lot safer back then in the big scheme of things, however domestic violence was rampant and worse per capita than today strangely enough and child abuse was rife both physical and sexual, and many kids of the time did not make to adults due to taking their own lives. But leaving that to one side, like you say, better and safer times in general, no argument there. CCTV today needed in many places to record anything that may happen. It is not a huge deterrent, except to "amateur" crims, although with instant recording and live feeds from many of them, it does deter the more "professional " crook at times. I recall dropping car keys on floor many times and your car would always be there when you came back. Mobile phones and social media have arguably ruined society. I know we are better off with the phones, and indeed social media, if used properly, but all social media has done to many people is actually make them "anti social".

Also a Sunshine Tech student! Left in 1975. Lived in Braybrook, South Road. Funnily enough though, my mum never shopped in Sunshine, she always went into Footscray to shop at Boluch's Polish butcher and deli. My greatest memories were Sunshine Swimming Pool and the library which was excellent.

I remember Sunshine was very multicultural back in those days. It was very safe walking through these streets. The small shops and Supermarkets thrived on business from the locals. Mostly Vietnamese Shops, a few Afghani & African shops nowadays. So different. Life is revolving more changes to come especially with the new Airport Train Line from Sunshine T.S. 😉

Appreciate your comments. This film sat in a dusty cupboard for 35 years before I got off my bum and had it convereted to digital. You can imagine that after 35 years I didn't have a clue what was on the movie. Can you imagine my surprise and delight when I saw film of the old Sunshine Shopping centre and the Sunshine Pool? Then it took another 5 years before I put it on KZbin!

A time that we will never ever get back sadly. Now you will see people from all corners of the earth there and rarely an Aussie. Put a handful of ingredients into making a soup and it tastes great, put many and it tastes like crap. Watching this video I again see my old mate called Australia who I haven't seen for a very long time and never will again. This was a time when you could actually buy something in Sunshine apart from Noodles and Curry. I walk through Sunshine now and sometimes for a split second I forget where I am, like most of Australia Sunshine has lost it's soul, we once stood for something, I'm not sure what we stand for today.

Ha! One of the most heavily trod paths of my life: in those doors at Coles from the car park, turn right - B-line straight for the toy aisles! I think by '75 Coles had just gotten rid of the long service counters running the length of the store, although maybe not - I worked at the Footscray Coles in about '75 or '76 and that store had them then.
@SebCam33
@SebCam33 9 жыл бұрын
I did the same thing back then. I would always go to the toys section and I remember those long flat service counters and all the goods for sale were placed on them - like a table-top.

Judging by the number of people it is the 60-70's ritual of Saturday morning shopping. With no late opening supermarkets Saturday was often chaos. I worked after school and Saturdays in Woolies, and remember just how busy it was. Then came Thursday nights, until 8.00 pm.

How I wish I could go back in time to those days life was simpler and better and the cars were absolutely magnificent. All the old ford's and holden if people knew how much they would be worth today they would hang on to them like crazy. I haven't been to sunshine in years now but the street set up is still the same just different demographics now. ☺

I remember 1973 and my mother peering through the curtains at the new neighbours moving into the block of flats next door... she was terrified, they were Vietnamese! She was complaining about outsiders coming into our area. I had to remind her that when we moved to Braybrook she didn't speak English either. All it took was a few neighbours that called her 'Stella' instead of Stanislawa and she felt like a local. The immigrant experience is a complicated road.

Great footage - It would be mid 70's as Lindsays was renamed Lindsays-Target then Target (acquiring the rights from the American chain of the same name) by new owners Myer in the early 70's after which they built larger stores like the one seen here.

l know Benny's pizza. It's located as the last shop down Durham rd from the Derrimut pub. Benny himself threw me out, which made me not liking the idiot anymore. He only thinks about money & if you hang around watching your friends playing pinball/ nintendo in his games room & you're not buying a pizza, he'll throw you out. Me & my mates ditched Benny's because of it & opted to play electronics games at Charlie's Pinball parlor across the road from the Derri pub instead & from then on.

Wow thanks for all this info and for taking us for a trip down memory lane. Not sure if you remember, but back in the 1970s, Benny's Pizza was owned by a tall skinny Italian man called Rudy. He had a bit of a "reputation" with the ladies - apparently he would always "chat up" the good looking ones. He left his pizza shop suddenly and - I think - under mysterious circumstances - but not sure. I wonder if anyone has any more information?
