Super Adventure - Ducati Multistrada V4s VS KTM 1290 Super Adventure S | Knox Armour
It’s fair to say that Adventure can be had on any motorcycle. All you need is 1 engine, 2 wheels, a tank of petrol, and a dream of where you want your adventure to take you.
But this test isn’t about roughing it on cheap bikes and bunking in hostels. This is a clash of titan’s test between the two most advanced Adventure motorcycles that have ever been made.

Like the naked bike and sports bike sector, the adventure bike category has different tiers, from lightweight low powered bikes, through to middleweights, through to large capacity adventure bikes like the BMW GS and the Honda Africa Twin. There is no doubt however, these two are in a different class, it’s just that no one has put a name to it yet. I’m calling it a Super Adventure.
Why? Both of these machines have engines derived from either a full-blown Superbike or in the KTM’s case, from a Super-naked and both machines have in excess of 160hp. That differentiates them. They also have more tech than the Starship enterprise, electronic suspension and even radar enabled cruise control. Think I’ve made my point. These aren’t normal adventure bikes, these are something special.
For 2022, The Ducati Multistrada V4s is in its 4th generation, designed to be simultaneously more sporty and more capable off road; all in the mission to “Rule all Roads”.
For us, the Multistrada’s claim to rule all roads meant more than just asphalt and set the tone for our Super Adventure test that would see us tackling some of the Lake Districts very best mountain passes, roads, beaches and trails.

@@mantan_rtw friction from 4 cylinders. Anything that needs to rev high to make power will guzzle fuel accordingly. Motorcycles with high compression use fuel to cool the engine. Also heavy. PS: I’d still take the multistrada for commuting.

I’d love to know how they got those numbers. It’s a thirsty bike for sure but I routinely get 210-220 miles out of a full tank on the highway. The claimed 106 miles on the low end doesn’t match my experience either. Riding mode matters but I wonder if their test environment may have impacted the results.

@@lilreddevil600 I have the 1290s and my friend has the multi. last summer we did just a fun ride together and - always had a pause at a gas station. Was not extreme - but my average ended up @ 4,8l/100 km and multi was 6,4l/100km. On that occasion we were taking it smooth and such. But I hear from him, that if any "fun" is had on the bike and the nr is close to 10l/100km. And that I find way too much. Especially if we compare to older V2 multi.

@@red.riot.2280 Yeah they're overblown , I'm not saying all is perfect but neither are the BMW. I rode Ducati enduro 1260 for 2years before ktm that too was a great bike but like the BMW became ridiculously over priced when the v4 came out . At 16.5k fully loaded the KTM was a bargain !!! The main reason though is the grin factor , it's never ending 👍👍👍 also this model of the 1290 is far superior in my opinion to the previous model.

Very fair, balanced review! Really enjoyed that. I ended up going KTM because that ASBO factor cannot be beaten for me. You're also very right... the KTM with knobblies makes for an incredibly capable off road lump! Add the crash bars and Barkbusters, it looks an absolute beast too!

I can only confirm this review. Nice to see riding both bikes to have them side by side. I did test ride Ducati and bought the KTM, the price difference was 6.000 € with Akrapovic. I like the sound of KTM more since it is Vtwin. Suspension for me as Iam only 74 kg can be on a bit bumpy road riding fast a bit jumpy in the back (I havent yet upgraded to suspension pack). That is my only downside, bike is so fun to ride, comfortable, quickshifter first for me is a must on this bike is amazing when pushing it. I love to go 1 day 400 kilometer to the Alps and only have smile on my face. Good job KTM, after 5.000 kilometres I only wish reliability long term will make me love this bike for years to come.

@@skyworks1621 I'm still procrastinating (mind you I do that with everything). The things that concern me are, when you watch videos of owners doing maintenance like getting to the air filter and how much plastic stuff you have to remove and some of it breaks easily, and then there are the reports of electrical failures and quite a few reports of catastrophic engine failures at low mileage, poor ktm warranty and support and the time it takes to get parts, that combined with living in Australia where you hardly see any of these on the road. Such an exciting bike to ride through, loved everything except the seat felt like you're sitting on bricks.

An excellent comparative review! I tested both these bikes and the GS 1250 before making my purchase. All great bikes. Last September I went for the Ducati Multistrada V4S FULL - what a bike!! I absolutely luv it. The Ducati is the most expensive by quite a margin but for me it has a far more premium feel than the KTM. In the end though it was the magnificent V4 engine that won me over - you can plod, you can thrash, its just sooooo smooth, quick and engaging!! Thirsty yes (150 miles to light on) but I luv it!!

Yet another fantastic Knox video. Always testing the limits of how to convey the passion of riding to their viewers. We absolutely love this channel and your work. In terms of what bike? KTM hands down. Mainly because of the harm Ducati is doing to MotoGP by fielding 8-9 bikes against the weakened Japanese manufacturers, as well as their participation in the Climate Cult. For now our choice is the KTM, hoping that it doesn’t get infected with the climate cancer. If that time sadly comes, we’ll just stop buy either brand.

Ridden them as well. I ended up loving the Ducati most. It's slightly more sophisticated then the KTM. Love how it's less snappy in the slower technical stuff off road then the KTM is. Basically those Italian thoroughbred race horses have been given some proper training while the wild stubborn mountain horses of the KTM would like to do nothing more but to bite and kick you down a mountain. But the moment I got back on my warmblood sane sportshorse of an Africa Twin I knew that he would always bring me safely home without drama and with a smile on my face. Don't need a 160/170 bhp to get that smile.

Africa twin is way behind these in most areas and is not much cheaper than the KTM, perhaps the reliability of the Honda is a bonus but the switch gear and electrics seriously lacking

@@mktm1290 maybe. But the DCT is absolutely amazing. A quickshifter cannot tip the DCT and the Africa Twin gives so much confidence in tackling harder terrain. You don't always need a lot of power. Sometimes less is more. I never switch settings. I have it on user mode. And the one controlling the amount of power is me. Not the bike. Only thing I change is something shutting down the ABS.

As a Multi V4S owner and owner of 5+ Ducati's I've never had ANY reliability issues, proper common sense preventative maintenance helps any bike, but the V4S is the best one I've had, love being able to do it all, done Forest Service roads, trails & cut back on the hard ball road and carve the corners, keeps me smiling. Just enjoy what you ride, that's what makes it so fun 🤘

I’ve had the V4S now for about 4 months and it consistently gets 42 miles per gallon and I’ve put several thousand miles on it. With a nearly six gallon tank that’s plenty of range for me. You guys must have been riding it hard to get that poor of mileage. As a note, the Ducati only requires 90 RON fuel (85 octane) vs the KTM which requires 95 RON (91 Octane). Ducati has also stretched the Desmo service to 36k miles with an oil service of 9k or 24 months. KTM is 9k for the oil service and 18k for the major valve clearance check. It’s not enough to offset the higher cost of entry to the Ducati but it’s something to consider.

Yes seems to be a fair bit of deviation in mpg, some owners have more mpg, some have similar to what we had. We did about 700 miles and averaged 31mpg. The service schedule is incredible and we'll highlight that in our stand alone review that is coming soon. Thanks, Aaron KNOX

Best ADV review I have seen yet....Love that you took them to the limit on the off-road section. I am a novice off-road, but have some 1250GSA miles on the Colorado BDR and I don't think my V4S is any less capable (in more experienced hands....). I have the Desertx and just came off a 4 day tour and put it in to get an alarm fitted. I got a loaner … My experience was very different. The 4s felt significantly more clunky than the x going through the gears and going on/off the throttle. Maybe this is different at 7-9k revs … but around urban environments … the x was way more enjoyable to ride. Also with cruise control on … the 4s surges slightly back and forwards… it’s noticeable and off putting. On the x the cruise control was smooth. The tyres on the 4s are road tyres and no way designed for any off-road .. this bike on stock tyres is only for the road … where it excels over the x. But the x is pretty decent… I’d say closer to a true adventure super bike. The only noticeable benefit I saw in the 4s is that it’s weight feels much lower than the x and the smaller tyres and fork angle makes it much easier to move around when stopped … at lights … backing up etc. in short I don’t think it’s worth the extra nz$15k over the $28k Desertx. I’d recommend you test the Desertx as well as the 4s before you purchase :)

But having the money available, better to go voor the absolute best and accept the fuel consumption of the Ducati four-cylinder. I love my 1290 KTM. One of the first things I had to do though was change the seat. KTMs, every single one of them has a horrible seat. Like sitting on two by fours. I have two other KTMs, a 300 EXC, and a 500excf. All three of my KTMs have seat concepts on them now and what a great difference that made. I agree with the negative take on the tires on the KTM. The Continentals that came with mine are pretty good on the street, but not so good off road. You simply can't go wrong with the KTM. But that Ducati looks awful nice as well. This was a great video and a excellent comparison between the two top adventure bikes.

Last weekend I had my sons Pikes Peak Multistrada in the garage and as the owner of a 2022 KTM SAS it was great to appreciate the different aspects between the two. The Ducati is beautifully engineered and put together where the KTM seems more "value engineered" especially simple things like fasteners and panel fit etc. In saying this I prefer the V-twin engine of the KTM, the fuel consumption and the fuel range of the KTM over the Multi'. I can't afford the difference in price or running costs of the Multi but if I could I would still take the KTM but they are both great machines

I just finished making this difficult decision a month ago. I went with the KTM mainly due to price and I thought that things would also be cheaper to replace if I did break something while entertaining myself with the super adventure. The way the V4S drinks fuel was also a deciding factor. I felt like all I was thinking about where do I get gas next. You always sort of have to plan ahead if you plan off road adventures with the Ducati. Both bikes are super fun to ride. If they would have been the same price I would have gone with the Ducati.

@@gcosmos960 It is indeed better bang for your buck. Honestly after watching this video a second time these guys really have a very good review here. They pretty much hit all of the key points. The second ride I took the KTM out after buying it I was just in amazement with how effortless it was to toss around. I felt like a kid again, even doing 2 small jumps with it. Slow speed handling I give the edge to the KTM. It just feels so much lighter while screwing at slower speeds. I agree with the reviewers as well with what they comment about the Midas tires letting the bike down. The Ducati fells better on the twisties and I think it boils down to the tires.

Fantastic review. I really want the Ducati, but I just can’t get over the drastically reduced fuel range. I spend a lot of time on desolate 2 lane highways and 200 miles between gas stops is sometimes pushing it. I’m afraid I would have to stop with 3/4 tank left to make it to the next station.

My super duke gt managed 267 miles on a tank and took 21.4 litres on refill on a recent tour of Scotland. Admittedly mostly steady riding and with an unexpected detour meaning some very economical riding in order to reach our destination. Even with a mixture of fast, normal and steady riding a range of 230-250 miles was easily possible. It was as fast or faster than any of the other bikes including a couple of v4 Ducatis. 1250 gs and a mapped and decatted MT10 to name a few. The Ducati is lovely and in many ways and very desirable but with it’s price and fuel range I could definitely not live with it. The KTM has had a few minor issues most recently a faulty rear suspension electronic adjuster which if not fixable could cost up to £600 to replace but as I only paid 13K for it new in 2019 it with still be worth getting it done and keeping it.

I have had the 1290 Adventure. But am over the 19" wheel bike for anything we do (My wife will be onboard 85% ALL roadways). Now I am on the same SD GT as you. Yet--I ordered a Pikes Peak because....nobody knows.... Maybe I turned age 63 and: Oh hell with it--you only live once. It will have to be good, which by all reports is and delivers maybe a more SD GT sporting road experience. The GT does get really good fuel mileage (240 is a easy)which didn't matter too much as we "tour" less than 200 miles a day normally. If the the fuel mileage gets me down I see revised "test mule" spy photos of a more recent V.3 GT, which would incorporate many of the motor/frame/swingarm improvements of the newest SDR. That should be pretty sweet and I could likely get into one of those if KTM decided to issue it USA. Could likely step into the a new GT for about what 2-year old Pikes Peak could trade in for.

I love my 1290 SAS. The windscreen is rubbish, though. The best and most flexible configuration so far with the least amount of noise is the low R model screen plus the MRA Xcreen spoiler. To my surprise this lowered the fuel consumption even more from 5.1L/100km down to 4.7L/100km. That's absolutely fantastic for such a big engine! And of course, the Mitas tyres are mediocre. I've ordered Dunlop Meridians for next week, can't wait.

I’d reckon the TC on the KTM would feel much closer to the Ducati’s if it were shod with Pirellis or another type that is not at a disadvantage (in the wet, as stated in your test) like the stock ones. Electronics can only compensate up to a certain point after all. Both are excellent bikes, and it’s nice to finally see a comparison between them. I own the previous generation 1290 SA-S by the way. Great review!

Most detailed review ever made on the top of the line adventure bikes ❤👌.If that ktm 1290 had more off road focused knobby tyres things would have been different I guess due to it's marvelous off-road capability. For the price ktm offers & low maintenance cost I am sold to that. Unfortunately here in India Ktm adventure 1290 is not available 🥲 & hope it enters the Indian market soon. I own 390 adventure 😅. My rynox tornado pro 4 jacket has got knox protection guards. Now I know this company is much bigger & better 😊.

They do an R version of the KTM but is somehow a £1000 more yet loses the electronic suspension but that being said the off road forks are very very good

Great review, and fair comparisons all round. Like a boxing match, I appreciated each motorcycle's strengths, and alternately rooted for each bike , but it came down to KTM as the winner to me for the reasons given, and for a bit of my own growing loyalty. When my 2014 1190 ADV has lost it's thrill, I'll happily, eagerly, be putting my money down on the next 1290 iteration. But, I'll get rid of that huge ugly can first!

I don't see the super low mpg, as a Multi V4S owner I'm getting over 250mi and that's cruising and slightly throttle happy, the range is great, yea maybe not a GS1250 or similar but still reasonable

Reviving 9 months on, I swapped from a 1260 pikes peak multi 6 months ago to a SD GT Gen 2, the multi had fuel range sensor issues, was all over the place, and I was filling up with every ride I did, in contrast the LC8 on the KTM holds 3 litres more, but I only fill up every other ride now, so it shows how much more economical design the LC8 is compared to either ducatis twin or fours, I'll never buy another ducati. Also not to mention how bad the suspension is on ducati's, whether it was the manual ohlins on my Pikes peak or the skyhook in comparison to the WP setup.

I bought a GS1250R and a 1290 SAS. Kept the GS for about 4 weeks sold it. The SAS was so much better to ride. I've ridden the Multi as well. The electronics are better on the Multi, but I tend to set it the way I like it and leave it alone, so all the adjustments weren't worth the premium price.
