Dad was in the USAF and we were stationed in England from 69-72. I was homesick for West Texas, and decided to follow the Cowboys in '71. We didn't get the scores for the Sunday games until the Monday morning Stars N Stripes newspaper was delivered. I saved all Cowboys related clippings and avidly followed the Staubach-Morton rivalry, and the Duane Thomas drama. Only got to see the Cowboys in action in weeks-old NFL films in PE class every Friday. I had to listen to the '72 Super Bowl on Armed Forces Radio Network, and it was thrilling. About a month later, English television carried highlights of the game. It was a magical era.

Craig Morton had been 16-41 for 166 yards, 1 TD, 7 INTs, 4 sacks for a loss of 34 yards, and ratings of 34.1 and 0.0 in Super Bowls V and XII losses. Meanwhile, Staubach was 61-98 for 734 yards, 8 TDs, 4 INTs, 1 fumble lost, 19 sacks for a loss of 148 yards, and ratings of 115.9 (win), 77.8 (loss), 102.6 (win), and 100.4 (loss). Staubach always felt he should have started SB V. He was probably the difference if he would have played in SB V.

Morton had a much better arm and was more Mature. Landry made the right call
@sportshistorybuff3199 ай бұрын
To be completely fair, Morton's arm was in intense pain for the last month of the 1970 season, and in Super Bowl XII, the Bronco offensive line was in way over their heads against the Cowboy defensive line. The Doomsday Defense peaked during the playoffs and would have been a nightmare for Stabler, Bradshaw, Griese, Fouts, Anderson, etc. They were spilling into Morton's lap from the very first series of the game, just like the Steelers were chasing Tarkenton all over the field in Super Bowl IX. Staubach even admitted the two teams could have switched quarterbacks and Dallas would still have won, given how ferocious the Cowboys were on the defensive side of the ball.

I was a senior in H.S. in ‘72, I remember thinking back then how Dallas was going to win easily. Miami was a good, up-and-coming team, but they were considered lucky to be there. Dallas was on a roll and their defense was just dominating. I was rooting for Miami and was disappointed they got beaten so badly. Little did I realize then that this was not an ending - this was the beginning of their dynasty. It was awesome, I was living in Miami in those days.

13:39 great music starts. Don't know the name of the piece. But it fits in very well as Dallas seizes full control of the game with an overpowering running game coming from unexpected directions and multiple sources. Miami is overwhelmed on that first drive of the second half, and that uplifting music just keeps playing right along. And of course, Facenda: "The second half opened with tactical maneuvers on both sides. Shula and Buoniconti discussed means to seal the middle............. while Landry planned counter-action. Miami sensed the importance of this first series: Hold or be swallowed up. Buoniconti rooted in.....and tackle Manny Fernandez stacked over center. .....The shocked Dolphins watched Dallas fly OUTSIDE" (great music continues) Facenda: "Seventy one yards in eight plays. Seven of them sweeps. And the stunned Dolphins were suddenly down 17-3." 14:49 The once proud No Name Defense in full bedraggled retreat, dazed and confused.

When I was a kid in Dallas back in 1971 my mom got a very nice set of Dallas Cowboy Super Bowl Champion drinking glasses for free at the FINA gas station after so many fill ups in her green Volkswagen Bug. A few years ago we were talking about those drinking glasses and I said, “Wouldn’t it be something if we still had that set of glasses?” “I bet they would be worth something.” My mom said, “Let me show you something.” She walked over to her dining room cabinet and opened one of the doors and there they were. Still in mint condition. These things are so nice. Not like the cheap crap they make today. They are short glasses like you would have a glass of whiskey on the rocks in. They are thick and heavy and look like they are made of crystal with a smoked emblem of a Dallas Cowboy helmet on them. You would never get something like these for free today, much less at a gas station. This was back when the guy at the service station came out to the car and pumped the gas for you, cleaned your windshield, checked the oil, checked the tires, and gave us kids bubble gum.

Dallas a then Super Bowl record 252 yards rushing. Dominating. This is still fourth best ALL TIME to this day for a Super Bowl. 22:09 Even Mike Ditka 89 got to carry the ball once. '... every time he goes up in the air, he loses the ball!! Stay on your feet Calvin!' Yes, Calvin Hill needed to stay on his feet. If he had, the game would have been 31 to 3. He has lived that one over in his head innumerable times. Ditka could have scored two touchdowns if he had leapt forward in the air an pushed the ball forward to break the plane.

In that same game in the 4th quarter, what if the Cowboys didn't get that controversial pass interence call or Randy White didn't fumble the kickoff? In Super Bowl 7, what if Sonny Jurgensen wasn't hurt and started instead of starting rag tag erratic Billy Kilmer? It is what it is. Football isn't like the other major team sports.
