After defeating the Dolphins the year before, the Redskins were hoping for back-to-back Super Bowls victories. The Raiders had other ideas, John Madden's squad was not intimidated by the then-record setting Washington offense, as they shut them down and dominated the game.

Raider fan here. I also heard great stories about the Redskins in the 80s. The redskins were definitely favored to win this SB. They had a young Darrell Green, Russ Grim, Art Monk and Riggo. That team was stacked! But we also had a stacked team in a young Marcus Allen, Cliff Branch, Howie Long, Ray Guy, Jim Plunkett, Todd Christenson, Lester Hayes, Lyle Alzado, Haynes, and Ted Hendricks. Of course, coached by the should-be HOFer Tom Flores (How can you be the first Mexican American to win a super bowl and a player, assistant coach, and 2x SB winning head coach and not be in the hall of fame?)

Sitizen Kane Tom Flores was one of the best head coaches of his Era the fact that he's not in the hall of fame is a slap to the face.. goes to show that getting into the hall of fame is like getting chosen to be prom queen based on votes not stats

Till this day it was one of the more stunning losses I remember witnessing from me being a Skins fan. I as 9 years old and considering how we played I felt we were going to win again. I forgot, however that the first game we played against the Raiders doing the regular season we were down by 17 and the only way we came back was that the Raiders turned over the ball and Marcus Allen wasn't playing. Raiders that year was just clicking towards the end of the season. Skins struggled from the 2nd half of that NFC championship game against the 49ers and it bleed into the Super Bowl. I don't think they took the game as seriously like the should because a few mentioned they stayed out late that night. All in all Raiders remembered that first game they had against us and wanted payback.
