Agreed. Hopefully she just didn't listen to it enough to pick up on how great nearly every track is, because otherwise I cannot fathom her musical taste... CVIV has always been one of the truly great and timeless game soundtracks to me. Besides the ending theme of course, I really love the 2nd stage music, and the music in the Slogra and Gaibon area.. with the deep sunset at the end of your journey... It reminds me a lot of Vagrant Story that way.... it's so beautiful when a work takes place over a single day, finishing at sunset or twilight.... and yet it is so rare to see actually done as well as those two games do it.

One of my favorite games of all-time. One of my 1st games that i ever owned in 1992. As a very young child my mother owned an Atari 2600. So my first experience with a home console was the Atari 2600. Games like Berzerk, Ms Pacman, River Raid, Frogs vs Flies, Galaxian, boxing, asteroids, Spider, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros etc.... Those games where my literal first introduction into gaming as a very small child in the late 80's early 90's. So i went from gaming on my mothers Atari 2600 straight to a Super Nintendo skipping The Original NES entirely. I still vividly remember the day my dad purchased my SNES at Walmart on my 5th birthday June 19th 1992. To start off i had 2 games Super Mario World, and Super Mario Kart. Not long after i eventually received My All-time favorite SNES game Super Castlevania IV. I played this game so much i loved it, and still love it.

@Mr. NoName You would be amazed at how many annoying Sega fanboys are still around constantly defending the Genesis. Even its notoriously awful audio. Bloodlines does better than most Genesis games but it still sounds like a huge step back from the audio in Castlevania 4 and even the three NES installments. Slamming that like button SO hard. The heart thing is actually a common occurrence in the series. Regarding the stairs, you have to make sure to hold the direction you want to go in, as well as the diagonal direction of the stairs. Yeah, Death is definitely the hardest boss in the game. Though Gaibon and Slogra (those were the two prior to Death) also give people a run for their money. This game is a masterpiece, in my opinion...it's an example of how video games can be a proper form of art. The slowdown, while noted, almost makes the game feel more cinematic to me. Nice to see you tackle this one.
@Cannotbetamed17 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) Slogra gave me some issues - it was often tough to outrange his attacks on every jump. I didn't have too much trouble with Gaibon though. I really wish I hadn't wasted all my boomarangs on Death... I think I had maybe 12 charges going into the Dracula fight which made it very long.
@Dongled7 жыл бұрын
Gaibon is actually the easiest of the three IMO. Just a tip: the platform just before climbing the stairs to get to Dracula...if you jump into that pit directly in the middle, it's a set of invisible stairs. climb down to the left and stand all the way to the left. In a second, you'll get a full replenishment of hearts, health and a fully powered up boomerang. #thanksNintendoPower

The main character in all the Castlevania games is always a little clunky and heavy and I don't suppose the sound effect when he falls from a high platform helps that perception. And stairs are horrible in all the Castlevania games. I was thrilled when they added the ability to jump onto stairs in the third game (by holding up before you passed through them). Having played the first three and the two Game Boy titles, this felt like a ridiculous amount of control. I never considered that the manual wasn't really helpful in explaining all the features. Since this was the first game in the series where you do more than whip horizontally in the direction you were facing, I spent the first half of the game just experimenting with what else I could with the whip. It's always fascinating to see what happens when someone comes into a game or series from a fresh perspective. It's funny; while we have similar critiques of the game our experiences varied so that while it might be an average or even above average game for you, the changes it made to the series made it one of my all time favorites.
@Cannotbetamed17 жыл бұрын
I think it's a pretty good game. Some of the things felt a bit awkward - like I'm used to being able to land on stairs/other platforms automatically and having to press down (or something) in order to drop through it. That one treasury bit when I didn't realise I could extend the whip did have me swearing though. I'm surprised it wasn't needed until that point.

Great review, Pam! Your editing keeps getting better! I'd hafta say that this game is the easiest in the series simply because you can swing the whip in so many different directions. One of the reasons the NES ones are so difficult is because you can only whip straight ahead. And the controls on those earlier games are a lot more stiff than on the SNES. Since you liked this one, I'd recommend Bloodlines on the Genesis next. You even included a password screenshot from the game here! :P

It’s always interesting when someone comes into this series the back way in - and especially from SotN at that! Pretty hard to be impressed, I’m sure, after THAT game 🤣 But as someone who had been playing Castlevania since 10 years old when the first one came out on the NES…. lemme just say that Super CV-IV *felt* like a MASTERPIECE at the time of its release. I received it for Xmas while in high school, and it blew me away! Stunning atmosphere and graphics for a Castlevania game. It looked totally revamped from the NES games - and that left quite an impression on any gamer *at the time* And still to this day, I listen to that soundtrack at least once every few months 😄 Thanks for the memories! ✌️

I gotta agree with the challenge factor. You should review Castlevania: SOTN at some point.

It's been so long since I played SotN. I mostly remember a lot of backtracking and never knowing where I was supposed to go.

@Cannot be Tamed Do you know, In the Japanese version of Super Castlevania IV, These was a Cross on a tombstone that was omitted from the US version, and there's blood.

This was the game that taught me that I hate cheese. I used to beat the Grim Reaper the cheesy way for the longest time, then one day got a thorn in the butt and decided to try fight him without hiding behind the block, in which case he becomes Ninja Gaiden level of difficulty. It took a few tries, but when I finally got him it was far more gratifying. After that, I vowed not to use cheese methods to beat games again.

Okay since I just commented on your bloodlines games, I HAD to come and check this one out. This one is my all time favorite game for a lot of the same reasons you described in the review. The game was there at the launch of the SNES platform and really did a good job showcasing what the SNES could do over its predecessor. Great review Pam...sorry my view is three years late 😋

Great soundtrack that I still listen to on occasion.... but damn was this game difficult! I can get through the first stage or two and then that's about it. Amazingly, I fair much better with Symphony of the Night (another great game soundtrack).

Too F...... good! For a title released just after the console had been. Visually and aurally stunning, virtually flawless.

Great review. The Japanese version has a lot of religious artifacts taken out of the western release and blood was converted to green acid. So I went with the cheaper Japanese version for authenticity.
