Thanks Jeremy... I thought the "Johnny" comment would be funny.. The esc, it will work but it's far behind the 880, with no lipo anything, no motors under 25 turns.... However, if running kit motors and a Nimh or Life pack, your good. My thoughts are, most people (at least here in the States), use at least a 2S lipo and I see a lot of people swapping this kit ESC for a HobbyWing QR 880.

Hey Uncle Bob, nice unboxing. I bought the "normal" (blue) version but painted it black (because I'm lazy and that's the easied color to lay on... 😅). That's really a nice Monster Truck and I was impressed with the handling even paired with a badly tuned radio at the time. Hopefully I will play in the snow with it 😅 Yeah these Tamiya ESC are really a let down 😢 Especially no LIPO cutoff 🥴 But it's a nice package 👍

Hi Gabe, thanks for the words mate. I also have "The Blue One" and it did go blue last summer, did the back, lower part in black, and I bought it in 2016... I played in the snow with Clods back in the 80's & 90's but we didn't have waterproof stuff back then and had a few run-a-ways, after those years and me getting older, I don't run in the elements anymore but someday, I just might do something crazy....

Thanks Mate... They could have done the esc better I think... 880 specs, Tamiya switch and still call it the TEU-201 BK and keep the badging. Most will swap it for the 880 anyway.

I bought one of these 4 years ago when they first came out and never opened it thinking it was going to be a limited run model. I see they are still for sale and I'm debating opening it up and building it since it's my only Clod buster and have always wanted one since I was a kid in the '80s. Maybe I'll just buy another one to build.

Yeah, Tamiya re-re'd the Black Clod... I don't know if there is anything different from the one years ago... I'm only missing the Chrome Edition Clod.. I say get a "normal" Super Clod Buster, the blue one, built that and run the hell out of it... Just get yourself a bearing set and I highly recommend steel pinions (Robinson Racing) and never use Loctite blue thread locker on Tamiya plastics.. Get hobby safe grade thread lock like Tamiya or Kyosho types... You'll be good to go.

@UncleBobsRC well after watching your video my curiosity got the best of me and I found one difference, my kit has the 106BK ESC. So I may buy the Re-re black edition and build that one then. I like the black and red color better. Reminds me of my super Blackfoot before I modified it back in the early 90s to look like Grave Digger. One last question, did you ever try a 3s battery on that new Tamiya ESC that came in your black edition?

Hey Bob, nice Super Clod! It’s a model on my wish list! The TEU-201BK does seem to be inferior to the HobbyWing 880. Loved the humour in the video (it’s still a windscreen for us UK guys! 😂😂) a shield is what you use to protect yourself from being made dead in a video game 😂😂😊😊. Still looking forward to seeing how the Super Clod looks, I’m interested in how you paint the body and how you get rid of those moulding lines. Awesome update Bob, lovely to see you. Thanks John... Ah yes, the screen vs shield dilemma or debate... You are right a shield protects you, even while driving, a screen lets air/water/cold and so on in. I get it, we don't say TV shield, we say TV screen or at the movies, the movie is shown on a screen not a shield... Laptops, Computers and the like... All have a screen... But you cant see through the screens I mentioned here.. LOL. Yes, the ESC is decades behind the 880 and I see a lot of people swapping them out for the 880. As for the body, Mark did his by sanding them down a bit then painted and it looks great. On my Gray Clod, I scoffed the area with 120 grit paper, use Tamiya putty, sanded, filled, sanded, filled, sanded.... Every time I sanded, the grit count went up, in the end, I used 1200 grit Tamiya sand paper, then I washed the body (after letting the putty cure for a week), then when fully dry, I primed it with Tamiya primer, 2 coats of that then 4 coats of paint...ATB to you & your family also my friend.

A French Letter Mark, something we know nothing about....LOL. Funny thing, I built the truck mostly without the manual.. LOL I needed the manual for screw sizes cause I cant remember them all. The ESC I got excited about till I read the specs, total let down. As I said to Addam, they could have kept the 880 specs but add a Tamiya switch and keep their branding and its title. Most people run at least a 2S lipo and I see people swapping out the kit ESC for an 880. ATB Mate..

Thank you for sharing Uncle B! I almost picked up one of these Black Editions, but I still have the 3 Clod projects that I'm working on and have to finish. And I still have to put the Juggernaut back together. Been busy with work, having to travel almost 6 month already and the year's not even done. Interesting ESC it came with, but like you said, HW 880 would have been better. Is the quality of Tamiya going down? Strange that you had to trim the tires to fit over the wheels. Hope to see a running video soon.

Thanks Man, Glad to see on... It won't get a run till late spring or so, Bob don't run in the elements. I still need to paint the body and the wife says "NO" to painting in the house, No garage.. I hear from a viewer that Tamiya told him via an email, that the esc is basically an 880 and the specs on the box is wrong. Yeah man, the flashing on the tires was a real bummer too, as I said, "Made in China", LOL..

@@galkawarrior I have JConcepts for my Gray Clod (wheels and Tires), The truck now has a wobble when I run them, bunched foam insert I hope. I do like I can change the offset with the wheels but I don't like having to use just their tires on the wheels without major cutting to fit other tires on.

@ I bought the Proline Brawler wheels when they first came out, I went for the wider wheel offset, but they’re too wide for my liking. I was then going to put them on my Juggernaut, but that meant buying Clod wheel spindles, cause the Juggernaut’s slightly longer. I also got the JConcept’s tribute wheels when they first came out, but never really fitted the Clod tires on. Found out from one of your previous videos that they don’t really fit. Hence why I need their tires, going for the medium wheel offset.

@@galkawarrior I have a set of those Pro-Line wheels with Pro-Line Destroyer tires, I don't like the look of the tires and not a fan of the wheels but they do help a truck handle a bit better. Right now, they are on my 2nd TXT-2 build as I went with the Clod stub axles (TXT stub axles are too long). Other than JConcepts being biased, I do like the wheels and their tires even though its @ $130 to outfit a truck with their products.

Thanks RC So and So... I've not said much in a while however, I am always watching & liking videos.. Going through "Life Shit" as of late. Let the Chief know, I here from a viewer that it is basically a Hobbywing 880, he heard this via an email from Tamiya, He said that Tamiya says, The info on the box is wrong... I did a few tests and my HW EZRUN Max Program Card does indeed work. Is it like the 880 and preset to lipo cut-off, that I do not know, only time will tell. BTW, I did go back and re-watch your video.. LOL.

Thanks man.... dude, I'm not sure, they don't look "Black Chrome" like a normal black chrome wheel does but they look more regular chrome in person... think if they were really black chrome, they would be darker. I think black chrome would have really set this kit off... As well as dropping in the the Gray Edition Clod Black & Gray grills & parts. The Gray Edition Clod comes with Black and Gray grills, bumpers, roll bars and other parts.

@@UncleBobsRC yes it does, I have a black edition that I painted matte black, I ordered the gray edition grill, painted it matte black, and the gray edition black bumpers & roll bar, I like the look, also my buddy brought a gray edition, and his came with the HW880, even says it on the box, but the black and the blue edition does not say that

Hey bob ,I emailed tamiya usa and was told through an email that the teu-201 esc is identical to the Hobbywing 880 esc except for longer cables and they added a fan,I have the email saved from Tamiya.Anywyas I plugged my Hobbywing program card and it is identical programming to the Hobbywing 880 esc.Also when you open the box the casing says 880 on it ,it’s basically same as the Hobbywing internals.Tamiya told me to ignore the Japanese specs written on the box lol

James, See the comments between John (JF RC) & I.. Nah, never tired of Brits, after all, My family (part of it ) is from the UK, Grandpa from Holland, Grandmother from Sheffield area... My dad was born over there, My siblings & I are my family's first born here in the States, on my Dad's side. Spit or swallow, I don't care as long as she su*** D&*@.... LOL. Been many videos where my coffee went flying and I found out the hard way to hit the head (take a piss) before watching any of Mark or Robs videos.. My thoughts on Clod grills are what I hear a lot about them.. Tamiya didn't have to be so 80's with the new design and left the with just straight '"bars". I seen a guy on a Clod Facebook group who cut down the 4x4x4 and shaped it to the slats in the grill, Looked tits man. As for a run video, next spring or so, I still need to paint the body and Bob don't run in the elements... Take care my friend!!

Kind of seems like they picked up some low spec 880s and rebranded them. I have seen similar stuff before where the they replace a few bits for less expensive components to save a lot of money and stick in a fancy box to make it look like you got something. I am sure it is the same overall thing as the 880 but with cheaper mosfets or other chips in there. I mean you are still getting a free ESC so not a huge deal but I am with you, would rather have the 880 in there!!

Thanks Addam... The ESC I think fails the RC enthusiast, as most people I think will swap it for the 880. This ESC will get you up and running and as you said, at least it comes with one.. However, most people use 2S lipos, and the kit ESC has no lipo anything, only 25 turn motor limit (again, ok for kit motors) but I seen that fancy looking box and I was like "YES" they spec'd a new dual motor ESC, them I read it, total let down... They could have used the 880 specs (or transplant the boards into the newer case) Put on a Tamiya switch and still call it the TEU-201BK, I mean, the Tamiya ESC came in an 880 plastic inner sleeve but with a Tamiya name on it...

Truth is, They are all called "Super Clod Buster", the Blue, the Gray & the Black, only the OG & 2nd Gen were Clod Busters.. But as for the colors, man its a toss between the Gray & Black.. The Blue Super Clod Buster kit is the one to get if you wanna "mod" it out as its not a Limited kit.

@@madmustangrc214 Ture, Tamiya did use a few different speed controllers in Clod Buster's (Super Clod Busters). I think the first was Teu-106Bk, Not sure what one I gave you, the HobbyWing 880 & now this Teu-201 BK. The difference between the Clod Buster, Gen 1 & Gen 2, these had MSC and the Super Clod Buster's had ESC's, metal chassis braces, gay 4x4x4 grill and some funky stickers.. the chassis & gear boxes, wheel size & tires are all the same, they even build the same other than adding in the braces and mounting the ESC.
