if I'm not mistaken, Fokker's custom pattern/emblem are a reference to the real VFA-103 Squadron aka Jolly Roger. It's even more on the nose since the aircraft in Macross are obviously based on the F-14, which the Jolly Rogers flew.

The evolution of the Variable Fighter line and its mechanical technology is frankly half the appeal of Macross as a franchise. The creators _really care_ about making these mecha look and feel interesting and they're... basically just military planes but wackier. It's impressive.

VFA-84 F-14 Tomcat squadron was the one that inspired Fokker's (yes I use the german name of plane manufacturers not Focker that I think is anime accurate, but I think that is the name that inspired the writers) livery. I also think that Tomcats heavily inspired the Valkyries. They (VFA-84) were disbanded in 1995 and then the VFA-103, a F-18 Hornet squadron took their insignia. If you want more of Roy, Macross Zero is where you want to go and it has connections to Frontier. If you want the rogue sequel that became an alternate timeline, check out Macross 2. If you want the very best of the 90s, watch Macross Plus. Here's a timeline for your reference: Macross Zero > SDF Macross > Macross Plus > Macross 7 > Macross Frontier > Macross 30 (this is a video game btw) > Macross Delta *(Most of the shows are sequels of each other save for Zero which is a prequel and Plus which is a side story.) So, you said you wouldn't read a comment defending the whole "marry your cousin thing", I'm not defending it (I'm guessing lots of folks have done that already based on what you've said; I'm not too keen on it either but it's worth knowing about) but informing you that it is legal in japan (among other places). It's allowed in a "literally no other choice to keep the bloodline alive" context. Also, scientifically, such a thing happening only once in a long while won't wreck your gene pool. You'd have to do it as frequently as the hapsburgs to really do damage which is exactly the situation everyone wants to avoid in the first place.

Re: the people building everything on the ship and the two sea vessels easily attaching - so everything was built on the alien technology, which was perfectly designed to modify and reconfigure based on need. The idea that the two vessels could be used as 'arms' was as easy to introduce as the entire transformation of the SDF-1 itself: the technology is completely transformative, and thus it simply needed to 'integrate' with itself. Same thing with the interior - the entire vessel can reconfigure on a whim, so constructing an entire city was really a minor change.

The novelization makes much more sense. The animations are great to inform your imagination but the novelization explains everything so much Better. Rick and Lisa have kids and it’s only then Minnie realizes what she missed out on by turning Rick away, cause she did have feelings for him but just assumed he would always be there waiting when the fame died. Protoculture is a power source but the Zentradi are confused by emotions and think emotions and magic from movies are extensions of the protoculture power source because the protoculture has been kept a mystery to them to keep them slaves, and they need it to get their freedom from the Masters. It’s a great bit of science fiction. Minmei is still annoying but her song serve as a stand in for the feelings of the average citizen caught in the conflict. Love it! Love the animations too!

This is true, but the novels change a few things that aren't really that way in the anime. I'm not suggesting it wasn't good storytelling by Jack McKinney, but it's Robotech (which I fell in love with as a child) not SDF Macross. The definition of Protoculture. The "thinking caps". The little "Men and the Mecha" excerpts. Those were actually very good ways of dealing with the deficiencies of the anime. I think the issue is that in the US, we much prefer/need stories completely told and nicely packaged. Any anime fan knows this just isn't a reality in anime. There are fantastic animes that never get completed. Even great OVAs that really could use a couple of additional installments, but they'll never happen. Kinda unfortunate.

Orguss just would not have fit. All of these things need to finally get the love they haven't had all these years … true classics! That said … my advice is DON'T try to compare Robotech to Macross too much. Not because rabid fanboyism but because it can't be fairly done. Robotech had to basically nerf the bits of Macross that were a problem and make a few changes to stitch Southern Cross in. And what followed likewise had to be edited for cohesion and BS&P. My advice is to enjoy Robotech for what it is, not for the source material it never could've been. It's still a good show, just aimed at a younger audience in a slightly simpler time.

So many things to say! 1. @13:00 Minmay was suggesting committing joint suicide with Hikaru, probably to show that Hikaru was growing up enough to realize that joint suicide was more messed up than romantic, and Minmay was still a long way off from growing up herself. The only upside to that weird after-war epilogue was seeing Minmay finally start to grow up, and have both Hikaru and Minmay realize that they both ended up changing too much as people to get back together, and that's actually okay. That bleeds into... 2. The Misa/Hikaru relationship: Misa looks and acts noticeably older than Hikaru, and a younger guy actually having a canon older wife in anime is pretty rare, even today, and I think that's a case of subverting people's expectations that actually works really well. Macross did kinda screw that up by making her only two whole two years older than him, despite how she seems more like five, (and they also made her a singer herself, I think? Despite that defying the whole point,) but still. 3. 'Culture as War' is one of the more interesting things from the Cold War: the USSR had a severely difficult time dealing with people smuggling in western rock music and movies, and some Russians would spend years looking for a song they only heard once even as late as the 80s. Sending people to the gulag for smuggling things like Elvis in was so blatantly absurd that it undermined the whole state ideology, and seeing the world in American movies made it more and more difficult to lie about how backwards the USSR actually was. 4. I'm old enough to remember when Battletech decided that Macross was a good match, and the subsequent lawsuit that ended that. Pretty funny, considering that Battletech is usually way more grounded than transforming mech planes.

Robotech kind of fixed the age gap so that with Lisa being born in 1985 while Rick is born in 1990 though it's funny to note Hikaru and I share our birthday though not year of birth. I have so much antipathy towards HG because thanks to that we lost our LAMs for good, but somehow Exosquad never suffered at all despite having some definite asset theft from FASA.

This video was very enjoyable! Seeing the original Macross was a long wait for many of us that watched Robotech originally, though fansubs were around if you knew where to find them. Although many of the sequels would get the "Macross formula" right...that didn't necessarily make them better. Plus is a legendary production, one of the greatest anime ever made...but it doesn't have the unforgettable tones of Roys death or Hikaru and Misa's best moments (before he screws up again). Even the excellent Frontier feels like a slick wish fulfillment with... (spoilers) no more zentradi to murder, certain characters making it to the end and the triangle being less of a heart break. (End spoilers) Thanks for this, your delivery really brings the laughs. You're a little short on the near legendary production details...the crew who made this were the legends of the anime industry...but the animation goes from incredible (the first episode and the earth assault are very memorable) to absolutely awful. But that's all right, you came at it from a "fresh watcher" approach and it really made me feel good having you have similar reactions to mine...but mine were more than 30 years ago. Thanks again!

SDF Macross is a show I need to watch, be it in the uncut state or as Robotech season 1. The core themes of "Mechs and Love songs" sounds bizarrely endearing, and the fact that it also introduced many to Japanese animation when it was aired AS Robotech season 1 in the US just makes it a must for me. Also, To R_404: I'm actually someone who doesn't mind dubbed animation, as actors are voicing over a drawn picture rather than an actual person who is emoting physically. If it's good, I'd happily watch a show with an English audio track, ditto if the Japanese audio track is all I have and/or the EN track stinks. So I'd like to share the funny piece of trivia with you: There are actually TWO English localisations of SDF Macross! One being Robotech, the other being a more faithful translation starring Vic Mignogna as Hikaru and Mari Ijima reprising her role as Lynn in a rare case of pulling double duty. It also starred a pre-insanity Monica Rial, but Rial's downfall is a story that's best left to someone more qualified. It will probably be the latter localisation I watch, especially considering that the Harmony Gold lawsuits are over (thank god), but I WILL still watch the Robotech version down the road.

That was a refreshing watch and it was nice to see an intelligent person's introduction to the franchise! Kawamori didn't like the impracticality of many transforming robots of the time such as the Diaclone line used for Transformers where an engine couldn't exist because it turns into arms or even the driver/pilot couldn't sit because the space was occupied by hands. Thus the VF-1 came into existence. There also needed to be a reason to have giant robots so the enemy were large humanoids. It's a stretch of a reason but hey, it's a reason. And of course, the Macross needed to transform in order to fire the main gun so every transformation happens for a reason, not just "robots in disguise". The Prometheus and Daedalus attach to the Macross on the docking ports. In the third episode, the ARMD ships were going to dock there but they got destroyed. In DYRL, the ARMD ships are attached. Thank you for recognizing Hikaru's jerkwadiness and utterly ridiculous obsession with Minmay. At no time did Minmay lead him on and neither she nor Misa deserves someone like him. Kaifun is not a first cousin but a cousin by marriage. Hikaru at first refers to Kaifun as Minmay's cousin but corrects himself and says Kaifun is her uncle's son.

I'm just up to the point in this video where Roy dies and so far I have to say that the first series of Robotech matches the story beats perfectly. Yes Robotech was a bit dumbed down and censored, but it's largely the same story. I also need to say that, watching Robotech in 1985 as a 10 year old, it was the first kids show in the US to ever show character death (as far as I am aware) and I do not recall anyone who watched the show then freaking out or being scarred for life by it. Other shows (Voltron comes to mind) censored the death and claimed all the bad guys were robots because of a belief that kids could not handle death.

Heavy fan here and yes they do end up eventually rebuilding the city in a way that stops it being destroyed whenever the ship transforms and yes it is shown. At first it's shown that they just take the buildings whole sale from the city and lay them out in as close to an identical way as possible to how they were on the island. This is an unmitigated disaster during the first transformation. In the Mars episode they clearly say that one of the main reasons they don't want to transform the ship is because of renovations to the city and that construction supplies is one of the targets of visiting the Mars facility. By the point of the Miss Macross pageant most of the buildings are now integrated with internal structures and the roads and buildings are no longer built on the plates and the seams of other moving mechanisms or even in areas that get exposed to space and crush zones. When the Spies infiltrate even in the clip you showed you can see that the city is now using other cavernous compartments as part of the city, elevators are more the norm for moving around and most of the buildings are no longer just things imported from the island the city has a completely different lay out the buildings are designed differently and many of them are no longer just built in big open artifacts but are instead integrated into the structure. During the episode Hikaru and Misa get trapped during a transformation it's shown that the destruction is mostly just garbage being blown around and a few cars tipped over the buildings are just fine. By the time Miriya joins in the only things that happens is a few things get shaken around by the fighting, some garbage gets spilled again mostly from shaking, and that's about it. So yes it gets fixed but rather than tell you they show you.

I vehemently disagree. I think it is a very bad rewrite and dearly wish that the series would be the canon, rather than the rewrites the movie does. No longer are Zentradi fascinated by culture, but they are literally shut-down by songs because that's how they've been programmed. But at the same time they try to push the message that love is greater than hate... while undermining that very message by making the Zentradi only respond to the songs due to being literally programmed to do so. I'm also not a fan of completely writing the mysterious enemies out of the story and have Zentradi male and female fight each other instead of that enemy. Not to mention the origins of the Macross itself. In the series it makes sense. It's an enemy ship that was damaged, veered off course and crashed on Earth. In the movie it just comes out of nowhere with no explanation of where it comes from, who built it or why it automatically fired on the Zentradi ship. Apart from the visuals it is in every way inferior to the series in my opinion. Every single change to the story is one for the worse.
@IsaacKuo2 жыл бұрын
@@Norbert_Sattler IIRC, the original series is officially considered the canon timeline, while the DYRL movie is officially considered an in-universe movie adaption of the "historical" events. However, there are still inconsistencies, as the "future" shows retain the DYRL design for the SDF Macross, I think.
@Norbert_Sattler2 жыл бұрын
@@IsaacKuo In Macross Frontier Clan Clan had a talk with someone (don't remember who) about how the Zentradi male and female factions were constantly at war with each other until the Humans came long. That is quite clearly the movie continuity. There's also what the villain says about how ironic it is that during the climax "Ai oboete imasuka" of all songs is used, which is no outright proof, but very strongly hints at what the song was in the movie. But to me the biggest give-away to me is that this mysterious enemy that was able to fight the Zentradi to a stand-still for millenia in the original series is just completely absent from every other Macross content outside the OG series. Though I think that is precisely the reason why they made that rewrite in the first place. By having the conflict a pure Zentradi civil war, the movie itself can resolve the issue in a neat bow, while the series would require some follow-up about what happened to that species, be it a peace-treaty, cold-war, outright war with the species or some cataclysmic event that eliminates it. If they were able to resist the Zentradi war-machine for millenia, they must have considerable territory and power... too much to become a non-factor without any explanation. It's like they written themselves in a corner with this massive, mysterious threat and rather than dealing with it in the story, they just retconned the threat out of existence with the movie since it's so much easier. Somewhat understandable, but still rather infuriating. The Macross II movie, where some of the protoculture turn up is surely non-canon spinn-off, with that I agree.

If I remember right, the fight against Bodolza was going to be the show's ending at first, but then the studio got an extension which is how we got the epilogue arc. Speaking of, while I do agree the Hikaru, Misa and Minmei love triangle went too long, there are some parts of said arc I do like: 1. The revelation that the Protoculture/precursors who created the Zentradi also created humanity and potentially other species. 2. Humanity and their Zentradi allies colonizing planets on the off chance Earth can't be repaired. 3. Quamijjn more or less becoming the new Zentradi emperor.

How every time the day was saved by the power of music and love is very tiring. The Mecha's are top notch (Kawamori knows his job very well, the even designed some Diaclone/Transformers, what else could you expect from him?) but the soap opera thing is more tiring than the Peace-War/Earth-Space conflict from Gundam. Of course, that's a subjective opinion. Thanks for the review!

Robotech was my very first anime ever (around age 10 or 11), so you can imagine that it had a huge influence on my tastes in anime and media in general. I love the sci-fi elements: the colossal space ships, the fascinating and unique maneuvers (sending your giant ship boring into the innards of a moon-sized space station and detonating a first-world nation's entire nuclear stockpile inside it is absolutely primo), swarms of streaking missiles and of course, transforming robots. I'll have to part opinions on you with the VF-1 Valkyrie: I think it's THE most elegantly designed transformable mecha of all time, beating out every Zeta transformer, imho. It's easily one of the most iconic mecha designs ever. As a kid, I was okay with the love triangle elements, but the Minmay pop star subplot bored me. Especially since Robotech's localizations of Minmay's songs are... not the best. Loved the video! Interested to see your opinions on SEED. That was quite the controversial entry, back in the day.

I got to disagree with the belief that when the Macross transformed more than once it kept destroying the city inside of the main ship. From what I remember, from both the American dubbed version Robotech and Macross. It was right after the first battle with the Zentradi in space when the ships were all combined into the Macross aka the SDF-1, that the rebuilt city was destroyed. But it took them about a few weeks while Hikaru/Rick was trapped after a battle with the Zentradi and his aerial acrobat plane was stuck in a portion of the SDF-1 with Min-Mei/Minmay whom he saved. While they were trapped together, they went through some stuff and grew closer romantically speaking until they were eventually rescued. By the time they got back out, the city had already been rebuilt it and done so in a way that would protect the citizens from further transformations and possible exposure to vacuum with blast door shutters during a battle until they could figure out how to activate the shield system. And that's when they created the pinpoint barriers using those rolling computer mouse things to quickly move the tiny every shields around to block incoming missiles. Although I have to say one of the biggest issues I have with these shows isn't so much just the fact that humanities often up against the wall. A lot of sci-fi series do that. One of the big problems was that the main good guy/the protagonist was usually a bad fighter. Not a bad pilot but a bad physical fighter. And there's always some other person who can generally kick their ass easily in 1 on 1 outside of the cockpit. And in this series that would be Min-may's (distant) cousin (or she just called him her “cousin” as a nickname since they grew up in the same neighborhood, A lot of people do that). I mostly remember that he played that Kung Fu fighter Shao Pai Long - that Min-May actually sang song for as she became the new diva for the Earth forces - The primary songstress that everybody focused on for a long time. While I don't remember his name I do recall that he pretty much becoming a modern day Bruce Lee/Jet Li/Jackie Chan kind of character for them But then also became drunken and verbally abusive to Minmay in their relationship before it finally hit rock bottom and he split. And whenever Rick/Hikaru and him got into an argument, the dude straight laid the boy out like 4 or 5 times. And that's not counting when he got bodied by the bad guy - Kamjen who eventually became a friend/ally in his mecha, Because it was his fleet that was mainly chasing after the Macross/SDF-1 for like 2 years through space after the initial Space Fold incident which standard these (I'm guessing like 30,000 remaining) citizens and soldiers. Which really makes me wonder how good Rick/Hikaru really is since Roy Folker, who was like a big brother to him really wanted him to join their military. At best I would say he was a good balanced pilot, but not one of their best by far. Especially when his co-pilot/subordinate Max was so good he actually attracted the eye of the zentradi Ace pilot from the segregated female fleet (since male and female Zentradi were bio-enginerred for war, and often fought and killed each other when together) and fell in love with her. Even marrying and having a child with her before he became the Captain/Admiral of the 7th fleet that left Earth to go explore and/or colonized the galaxy after the 2nd Human and Zentradi war when a lot of their people living on Earth amongst humans couldn't hack it living peacefully. (Back to my point) Max being such a good pilot and marrying the ace pilot of the enemy at the time, gave Humanity two incredible pilots that could probably take on half a fleet of like 1000 (or more like 750) vs maybe 500 or so ships on humanity's side along with the allied Zentradi by themselves. The guy who became the secondary antagonist later on though, did in fact destroy both the SDF-2 and SDF-3 I think, right when the later was out of mothballs and barely functional. I think they said in a series that Rick/Hikaru, when he became the Supreme Commander of Earth's forces (in Macross I think they're called UN Spacey) he was secretly working on the SDF-4 by the time everything was over and by the time he died. I don't know if they ever confirmed if he married Minmay or Lisa/Misa though, Because over time he became a lot closer with the ladder due to Minmay kind of becoming a forgotten songstress by the time they were all in there like early 30s to mid-30s. And one of the main things that really brought me into the series was actually the music as well as the sci-fi action, the transforming robots and the drama. Even though my favorite one was actually the short-lived sequel Macross 2: Lovers Again. And I kind of liked it but I simultaneously hated that other series of Robotech Southern Cross - where the characters we're from my an 90s or late 80s looking generation and flew in ships designed to resemble helicopters and some tanks. And Sentinels - which was mostly humans and power armor fighting aliens that were largely comprised of energy that put themselves in like insectoid robot forms. Another one of the things that I'll never really forget the series for but it did ultimately kind of push certain developments forward, was the death of Roy Folker. Just going to his girlfriend's house and bleeding out on her couch while she makes dinner when he could have gone to the hospital. He could have just retired and become a captain or something. But no instead they killed him off and the weirdest most subtly overdramatic way way. Also from the fact that along with a lot of anime Claudia Grant/Claudia LaSalle, was probably one of the few Black characters back then. Also from the fact that they couldn't confirm if Captain Gloval was White with a weird reddish coloring or East Indian/Asian. I personally think that he was East Indian. Which is not bad if he was or wasn't, I just wanted to know for sure. And between the earlier parts of the series and when the first initial Robotech/Macross series ended most of the people on earth died and were struggling to put things back together. So it was incredibly surprising to me that they decided to assemble like 10,000 fleets of ships (each one with probably like 2000 frigates in about 10,000 fighters each, Most of whom were cannon fodder for the bad guys to blow up until the music starts playing and the more prominent figures come in to save the day somehow. Like Basara and his band Fire Bomber, Sheryl Nome and Ranka Ran Lee from Macross Frontier, and the group Walkuré from Macross Delta) and send them offer to the wide galaxy to get into God knows what else kinds of trouble especially when encountering technology and information related to the “Robotech Masters” or whomever else created the Zentradi, originally designed the SDF-1 and visited Earth like millions of years ago. With the common denominator is that they all or the one culture used music/rhythmic based sounds and energy patterns to communicate, like that weird alien structure from Macross Zero that the local island people built their little society based on just as the 3rd World War was ending, and that series too had a very ambiguous conclusion. Of which to control their own regiments of Zentradi groups like the Marduk Empire also used music through their Emulators like (the not so cleverly/uncleverly named) Ishtar. My one problem with that series too is that they never explained if the Alus that Ishtar heard of actually existed. I still love the music from the short series though, and the fact that the main protagonist wasn't even a fighter, he was a pilot for sure. But he was a reporter, And now that I think about it they probably should have given his ship that he was flying a lot of flares and some sort of smoke screen to get out of the battlefield quickly since it was essentially just a transforming jetplane mixed with a camera. Also from the fact that they gave a lot of attention to government suppression as well as propaganda style news reporting. On one side it was the government struggling to fight an enemy that they were unfamiliar with and to keep the public calm. While on the other side it was a young and somewhat ignorant bit growing reporter whom went from Just chasing a big story to wanting to report the truth no matter what happened afterwards even if it caused a panic and made friends with the enemy since Ishtar was saved by the old war reporter/camera man - Denis).
