Hi Rebecca, Since you have made stays before, I think you will find it easier the second time around. The more you do it the easier it will become. I love the quilted petticoat!! I used to stay away from "cheater" fabric, but now I don't have any aversion to it at all. I love the color. (A quaker ancestor of my husband made and wore a red petticoat to church service and was brought up on charges for wearing it. She was excommunicated and shunned. 😏 She left her family went to Indiana with a man who was also excommunicated and they got married.

Sounds like it could be a new trend - quilted pants. I recall the sweater pants that were such a hit years ago; people were taking their old ugly holiday sweaters and turning them into pants everywhere.

I always prefer gridded-on-the-back gift wrap for a similar reason - no measuring needed, and guaranteed straight cut edges.

You can find matelasse at the thrift shop in the bedding department! It’s a common bedspread material that was super popular about 10 years ago - so it’s all over the thrift world now! Imagine what you could do with a king size coverlet 🤩 Yes, you said it right :)

I picked up a twin size that should work well enough for a under petticoat. Planning to level it for history bounding since it should work well enough as an underlayer with a wonky hem. (Alas it is a poly blend)

I'd probably "shop" in my overflowing linen closet. Every time a family member cleans out theirs I end up taking items that I could "make a petticoat or new pillow cases" out of lol. Vintage lace tablecloths, floor length queen size bedspreads, etc. that all need to be repurposed because of stains or threadbare sections that could be worked around during cutting pattern pieces. One day I'll get around to using them all...

I love the idea of a quilted petticoat for two reasons. One is because it's a way to keep warm in cool seasons and also you could use it as a super comfy blanket you could bring on a camping trip!

Thanks for this. I'm at the stays part of my 18th century wardrobe. I've got one size nearly binding off need the other one lol. I've got part of my under petticoat done. I need to add ruffles to it and get bias tape for the top. I am no were near the petticoat. I had wanted brown wool and the only kind I can find is either 3 yards or over $45 a yard. So decisions are being made. Looking forward to seeing this play out.

I've never tried sewing stays before but from what I can tell from watching sooo many youtubers do it the best advice I have is don't rush just to get a video out. If you have a video that's just about mockups & fitting we'll definitely still watch 😁

I kind of just made the jacket for that for my mother it turned out okay I did not do the rest of it and I knew that she would not be wearing the proper undergarments and so I did a mock-up to her body and did my best I look forward to seeing how yours turns out hopefully a whole lot better than mine

This was so much fun to watch. I just got my own copy of Patterns of Fashion (revamped/new version). It's as beautiful and useful/inspiring as I expected! I also got Patterns of Fashion 5 (undergarments!), and figured out that my sticking point for fashions past about 1450 is the stays/corsets. Everything else feels "doable" but shaping and boning. Still, dreaming of fun projects when I am finally up to speed (or have the money to just buy the right stays/corset). There is a pattern in book 5 for 1780s 'half-boned' riding stays that might be a good starting point...

You can actually find pre-quilted fabric in different materials, too. Like, I know I've seen it with cotton fabric before also. And Dora is well - Lion's leg is hurting him today for some reason. 😔

@@maryball4651 The SHD is re-publishing all of the Patterns of Fashion books, since they were out of print. It was/is very difficult to find second-hand copies and they're often REALLY expensive. It's taking time for the re-published ones to come out though, because they're updating them.

It's a hooded jacket, that is sometimes quilted, so yep, a lot of the petticoat will show, both in front and in back.

Out of curiosity, is there a benefit to zigzagging over the top of the bais versus hand sewing it or as I have done it... where I stitch it on the wrong side first and use an edge foot with a straight stitch?

A zigzag stitch will allow it to stretch more than a straight stitch would, which might be more desirable for a waistband like this

@@LadyRebeccaFashions hand sewing does take a lot longer. I learned in grad school a way to do it by machine so it has a pretty finish. We were never allowed to zigzag items like that so I had to ask! Thank you for responding!

I just ordered some yardage of quilted silk taffeta to make a petticoat, but just realised that if I use it on the straight of the grain I'll get squares instead of diamonds. I can cut it on the bias, and piece the bits left over, but that seems like a LOT of work (I should just handquilt some silk, if I'm going to do that much piecing). Do you have links to the one or two examples you said you found of quilted petticoats with squares instead of diamonds?

I was so bad in geometry in school and I just couldn't figure out how to cut this without having 6 large triangles that would need to be pieced, just to eek out the hem to 100" (if I was lucky)! Thank goodness for people who can do this kind of maths and share it with those of us who can't! 💜💜💜

@@feezlfuzzl564 Quilting is used to affix upto 3 layers together. The outermost layer (usually silk), some wool batting in the middle, and a linen backing. Quilting the layers makes a very solid skirt and very warm.
