This is perfect!! I was looking for an authentic recipe and I've found it here! I'm a strict Hindu vegetarian and we don't eat alliums as well for the same reason as Buddhists, but it's so hard to explain it to people ugh. This looks so scrumptious. Thank you for your recipe. I have tried this tonight, it is lovely! I added a little bit of ginger. I used white fermented beancurd, 1&a half, as I found that the taste is not as strong as usual red beancurd. We finished the whole dish and looking for more! Thank you. :)

Chinese buddha bowls are so nice healthy pureveg for monks, nuns and ordinary people. Tibetan cultural monks n nuns should eat this kind of foods. buddha said if you don't have any food to eat then you can eat meat. This comment is from the land of buddha lumbini Nepal south Asia.

Hi Will. If you don’t mind this dish not being a vegetarian dish, you can add oyster sauce. If you mind, then you can substitute oyster sauce with mushroom sauce. Hope this helps. Happy cooking!

Hi Angeline. The main flavour of luohan zhai comes from the fermented bean curd. You can substitute it with substitute fermented soy beans but the taste won’t be the same. Hope this helps. Happy cooking!

I also wondering.. but somehow I knew an uncle who practise Hinduism, he woke up 5 am, then meditate, then go temple everyday ( 365 days ).. he told me when he eat strong food like garlic and onion, he could not focus or not much connected during meditation. I think depend on personal preferences. Some of us maybe just starting, some really into vegetarian for decades, extreme bland and clean eat.
