I am an extreme minimalist that is currently living with under 80 possessions. The only reason I know this is because I have been downsizing to fit all my possessions in my 28 litre backpack. I do not think minimalism is about the counting of items. However, I think there is a fun spectacle element to it. That I personally enjoy doing as a Video Maker. I also practice mindfulness & slow living.
In recent years I have come across several larger minimalist channels that have counted their items for fun. Such as Matt D’Avella & Samurai Matcha. Furthermore, I have also seen some smaller channels actually live with what I would call a ‘super’ extreme amount of belongings. Such as Craig and his 10 litre life channel. There are of course other extreme minimalists out there like, Robin Greenfield with 47 items. Youheum Son, whom at one point had about 82 possessions I believe.
The truth is I find it fascinating what some people can comfortably live with and without. I like to learn about the simplicity of not owning or having many things. But also the trials that can also accompany these low amounts of possessions. As obviously there is then also a lack of convenience. That sometimes arises with owning less. I like to do these trials to learn about my own comfort levels and how to balance my having of possessions with the energy taken to take care of belongings.
I am also intrigued with the idea of traveling very minimally, even if it isn’t a realistic endeavour for day to day life. The bum bag travel challenge for an extended period of time, not just 7 days, is my objective. Which is why I would like to trial it at home first…
I have now completed the 30 days living with only 14 items as a ‘super’ extreme minimalist. Here are my final thoughts…

As I always say, "minimalism isn't about what you get rid of - it's about what you keep." Having a clear 'why' you are keeping an item is the most important thing, and doing this 30-day challenge has given you a clear 'why' to keep or re-introduce items that make your life work for you. I am really tempted to give the 30-day challenge a go myself, to reconfirm my WHY and help me declutter the unnecessary (which I have done many times, but stuff keeps creeping back in😱😱😱). There is absolutely no shame in bringing back items to help in your day-to-day life as we all have to live and work in this world, and minimalism looks different for everyone. Keep up the great work. ❤❤❤

I highly recommend reading the book about Peace Pilgrim. She had less than 15 items. Only the clothes and shoes she could wear, and an apron over the clothes to hold her toothbrush, a comb, and a pen. No money. When things wore out she replaced them… gifted from others. That was it from what I remember reading the book about 20 years ago.

This was such an interesting video for me, I too have realized when trying to minimize my belongings, that much of what I have is to please or to appear respectable to others. We are social creatures and need allies, need to be at peace with our neighbors, and need a certain degree of acceptance from others in order to feel comfortable and secure. I also do not want to worry or hurt others, for conscience's sake. I will keep something so as not to hurt the one who gave it to me, or I will wear stylish clothes so someone won't feel sorry for me and give me half their wardrobe, (it happened when I was a child). People will treat or trust me differently depending upon how I dress and groom. Thank you for your honesty.

One of my favorite deodorants isn't actually made as a deodorant. Here in the USA it's called Milk of Magnesia, not sure if it's called something else in the UK. It's traditionally used as a stomach medicine, but works absolutely amazing as a deodorant. You can put it anywhere where your body sweats. And the bonus factor is that it's super cost effective.
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 27 күн бұрын
Wow that’s an amazing tip 🤩 They stopped selling the brand milk of magnesia in as many places for some reason here but I’m sure there is something similar. So basically it’s the chalk (magnesium hydroxide) that’s stopping the sweat? 😥 That’s really interesting. 😊
@jenniferwood307
@jenniferwood307 27 күн бұрын
The magnesium hydroxide doesn't completely stop the natural sweating process. What makes it effective is it's odor neutralizing effects by destroying bad bacteria. Similar to sodium bicarbonate in that way, but way gentler on the skin.

How did you come across that? haha....Awesome. Reminds me of an elderly lady whom I cared for and upon seeing her putting some Preparation H on her eyelids and questioning her about it, she said....They put all the same ingredients in everything, so she found it worked just fine for what she was wanting. (She did have dementia though!)

Haha, that's funny! I wonder if she had allergies. I imagine the Preperation H would help with eye itching and swelling. I came across the idea of using Milk of Magnesia for deodorant from an allergy support group many years ago. I'm allergic to nearly all deodorants, so this was super helpful to know. I love telling people this tip because I know how hard it can be to find a solution. Especially a budget friendly and readily available solution.

Homesewn garments last longer too because you can use better fabrics, line or underline the garment, etc. You can get creative with seam finishes which contributes to durability. But you will likely need to own a sewing machine and some gear to sew, not many want to sew garments by hand.

you also have to remember that in the Victorian days, pale skin was apparently a sign of being rich as you didn't need to work in the sun all day. The same with being overweight in the 1700's as it meant you could afford more food.

When you were talking about clothes, it reminded me of the problem in the book The Paradox of Choice, by Barry Schwartz. In a situation where we have too many choices, it can lead to indecision and fatigue. In the opposite situation, no choice will probably make you feel restricted and lacking freedom. Then there is the concept of enough choice, where you have enough options to feel free, while not having so many that will suffocate you. A lesson to be learned is that pushing your boundaries to either one of the extremes may suffocate you. And, as one of the whole points of minimalism brings to light, it is not about the items, but about the purpose. Personally, I have experimented with very extreme levels of minimalism, especially in clothing. In the present, I just wear black jeans or shorts, black socks, black boots, black t-shirts, and a belt. The most common jacket I wear out of my three tops is my leather jacket, but I also have a hoodie and a sweater. Being able to combine these few things, and layer them when the cold comes, is enough for me to have variety without any fatigue. A quick tip for people towards the more extreme side of minimalism is that, when you want variety, you can incorporate different accessories to create a different visual identity for that moment. My examples are my glasses, digital watch, scarf, gloves, and beanie. Thanks for the amazing video. Keep up the good work!

Thank you yes this is exactly the point I was trying to get across. That the lack of choice felt monotonous for me. 😊 in my regular wardrobe with abit more choice, I have 2 large pashmina style scarves that are organic cotton, that I love to use to accessorise. 😊

I wore the same dress every day for a year. 😂 i got the idea from the One Year One dress video. She used a knit dress and i made a linen dress lined with Bemberg in a neutral color. I had to hand wash it a lot since we're minimalist anyway and do laundry only about once a week. I started getting bored about 9 months in and i didnt wear it for parts of our trips to Tahoe and Yosemite where we were hiking in the mountains. I thought i might try it again with a different dress and go for 18 months next time. 😅

I have one pair of clothes. The trick is wash and dry the internal layer - socks, t-shirt and underwear while wearing the shell layer - shoes, shorts, and jacket. That way you’re not walking around naked for an hour waiting for them to dry. Also, pick an outfit you enjoy wearing that is active, and makes you look hot. I hope this helps.
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 5 күн бұрын
The t shirt and shorts/ jeans layer. were what I was wearing but it’s because I only had one. They needed washing every day as I was trying to only have one set of clothes really. I had a bikini to use in place of underwear. Also the weather went against me so I had to have something warmer really. Meaning my shorts could only be worn as loungewear. I had to live in my thick jeans. Which only got washed a few times in 30 days. The t shirt took a while to wash & dry. Active wear wouldn’t have been warm enough. Also in some areas in the uk activewear is seen as not very tidy. With only one set of clothes I had to pick an outfit that would be comfortable but ok in most circumstances and weather. Really I think one change of clothes is needed especially in an unpredictable climate😊
@selfhelp9175
@selfhelp9175 5 күн бұрын
@@SagelifeMinimalism yes I think it is country dependent. It warmer climates it’s much easier to wear less clothes. I only wash my one outfit 3 times a week either hand wash the internal layer or put it into a fast spin cycle for 15 mins and into the dryer 45 mins. Monday, Wednesday, Friday also go to the gym in them 5 times a week.

It’s so true about the societal pressures and also regular day to day life compared to hiking, or travelling around. I think female presenting minimalists have a much harder time being extreme - it is incredibly easy for men to “get away with” wearing same pants and shirt every day and never worry about being under dressed for any kind of event, especially if they are wearing a black or navy. My hair has a wave and also cowlicks around my fringe area, so I use bobby pins to hold it in place while it dries, and also to keep it off my face normally - I like how small and minimal they are. I found Dr Bronners too drying for my hair, and made the texture straw like. When I use something more moisturising I have less annoyances with it. 😊

The thing is that none of them is self-dependent. They borrow / share items all the time. Or they just use disposable items where this really would not be necessary (e.g. period products, towels, plastic cutlery, paper cups, etc). It it more appearance than reality. Number of items would rise quite a bit when they could not push ownership of the items they use to other people or buy and throw stuff all the time.
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 22 күн бұрын
I absolutely agree. When it’s super extreme it definitely relies on borrowing, renting things. Paying for services. Hand outs. Being given things. Constantly swapping rather than keeping things. That is, 1 in 1 out in a thrift shop perhaps as clothing wears out. Or when traveling to colder climates. I did a video a while back comparing my personal items as an extreme minimalist. Versus the items I share in a shared apartment. Which literally doubles the amount. It’s an interesting thing to discover 😊

I saw a video where someone in Japan brought one item back into his life each day for 30 days, so he had to be very strategic about what he picked. It was pretty extreme because at first he had no bedding. Pretty sure he had an outfit, but maybe I'm remembering wrong. It's another angle to start from 😂 really shows you what you need (and want) and why

Yes I think I saw that video. 😊 I did a slightly similar video but where I started with the 30 things that I thought were absolutely mandatory to save time in the process. It only took a matter of days to learn there were a few other items that absolutely made my life abit simpler. But yes starting without any bedding is rather extreme but very illustrative 😊

As for deodorant - I think eating garlic and onion really affects it. So you could test no deodorant while you don't eat those things. I've also seen some people say nightshades affected their body odour. So if you really want to ditch deodorant and be near people, there are ways 😂 My fave is my Esca, but it contains beef tallow, which some may not like. My second favourite is by Chapel, but it's not as smooth. Both work though! And don't stain my clothes like the ones with sodium bicarbonate do. I feel your pain on the hard water, too! I do no shampoo in nice water and my hair is perfect, but here in the UK with the hard water all the no shampoo options I've tried haven't worked well.

I always eat it in the summer too as I heard it stops mosquitos 🦟 wanting a bite 😂. I'm intrigued by your talk about paleness and beauty. As a fellow very pale person from the Netherlands I totally understand where you're coming from!! However I can't help but think there is an ethereal kind of beauty in paleness too, think about angels or elves, often depicted as pale with a glow. I do use makeup too however, and henna as well (both in my brows and hair). But I never try to get tan or use contour or bronzer or anything, rather just evening out my complexion and making my skin glow 'healthily'. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to beautify yourself. People have the ability to appreciate beauty, and it inspires us and can make us happy to perceive beauty as well as feel beautiful or special. Some people might say it's not necessary, but I would argue that having beauty in your life is in some way necessary for our wellbeing! This could be art, music, fabric, makeup, connections... but beauty and creativity in some way or another!

Me too, I don’t use the bronzer etc it’s a glowy tinted cc type spf moisturiser I use. To even out my skin tone, moisturise and protect from the sun ☀️ and even though it is the fairest I can get hold of I think it does make my face one shade darker 🤦‍♀️ 😂 so I have to blend it down my neck. It gets rid of shadows on my face and just makes my skin look less ‘dull’ you could say. Anyway you could say it stops people commenting I look sick. Would you consider the bangs/fringe to be a vanity thing? My hair is just straight but I had bangs when I was a kid and sometimes I just get annoyed by it touching me and my solution was to grow it out and tie it in a ponytail. Are you attached to keeping the short fringe or is it more like “if I had to do this tomorrow and had no time to grow the fringe to ponytail length”?
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 27 күн бұрын
Wellllllll 😂 I’ve had a fringe all my life (perhaps an option picked for me by my mother at the hairdresser 🤷‍♀️when I was younger) Anyway, it stuck. Then ironically in covid I let it grow out. At first I felt weird without it, like somehow naked 😂 but I did get use to it eventually. That is, use to not having a fringe. Then for some unknown reason when I was at the hairdressers about 6 months ago. She said to me ‘what would you like to do with the front?’ ‘Would you like to try anything new?’ 😂 So it was a pure experimental thing. I regret it. So I’ll be growing it out. This is one instance where I really did get use to not having a fringe. So much so, that now I have it - it irritates the hell out of me 😂 weirdly I never really noticed it bothering me before I’d tried not having one 😂

Do you straighten your hair every day? How often do you wash you hair? What do you do for heat protection for your hair? Do you only use Dr bronner on your hair?
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 27 күн бұрын
I wash my hair about every 5 days because it’s naturally quite a dry hair type regardless of whether I straighten it or not. I don’t ever get greasy roots for instance. I deal with my hair on a case by case basis, that is seasonally. For instance in winter it doesn’t really seem to need anything extra. If it does I’ll make homemade hair masks. I also wear a hat a lot in winter so it gets straightened less and less sun obviously 😊 I never blow dry my hair. However in the summer, with the added sun, then the lack of hat wearing, to cover from the rain 🌧️ it seems to make me want tidier hair 😂 ( I can’t hide it under a hat as easily in the summer). As I get too hot. 🥵 I straighten my hair the following morning after washing it but then I do not straighten again until I wash it again. In general in summer I go for a multipurpose product that is like a leave in conditioner, sun protectant & heat protectant. I just purchased the nuxe sun milky oil. That protects against all environmental factors we may come into more contact with in the summer. That is, it even protects against salt water & chlorine from the sea and swimming pool 🏊 🌊. 😊I’ll link my current product. I believe it’s available other places but this is where I buy it. www.marksandspencer.com/sun-moisturising-protective-milky-oil-for-hair-100ml/p/hbp60560643?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share

if messy hair was in, would u still straighten ur hair? if pale eyelashes and eyebrows were in, would u still tint them? two v important questions to ask for urself. my hair I would. the rest of it no.

The hair yes, because when it’s not been straightened the physical texture of the curls itch my forehead and I can’t stop rubbing it. The other is tricky to answer, as ultimately I think regardless of whether there are certain ‘beauty’ trends that are in. It would be whether it suited our complexion. Not so long ago people were bleaching their brows blonde. But because their natural complexion wasn’t extremely fair. They didn’t look washed out. For me it’s about personal peace…Because of my complexion, When I don’t in some way add colour or contrast to my face. Whether that’s via henna brows, lashes, lip balm or tinted moisturiser. My peace is constantly disturbed, by people I know saying ‘oh you’re a funny colour’. ‘You don’t look well’. I think it’s because in our culture now, we’re so used to seeing people with make up on - that adds colour. People have forgotten the array of different coloured skin tones out there. And that pale doesn’t always mean unwell. People will even use terminology for when people are sick like ‘the colour drained from their face’. So it’s the association and connotation of pale meaning unwell. So if people would stop telling me I look unwell, when I don’t do these things, I would stop feeling I had to do them. I tried for a long time to tell people close to me, how unhelpful it was. Especially as someone who had, had skin issues. (Pre cancerous skin removed) But they continued to do it. It annoyed me so much that I did choose the easy way out for my mental peace. Continuing to tint brows & lashes & wear tinted moisturiser & lip balm. They continue to tell me how ‘well’ I look when I wear it 🙄 as opposed to when I don’t. If people did stop mentioning it. I would still wear an spf moisturiser each day for sun protection & dry skin but nothing with a tint anymore. 😮‍💨 Long answer 😂

I mentioned at the beginning of the video that this had been a series & said to understand more clearly many people may wish to go back to the first video. Which I will link below ⬇️ Where I outlined why I would like to do this. But also what the items were. Which included a set of clothes. Obviously I was wearing the clothes when I took the thumbnail so they couldn’t be pictured. 😊 EXTREME MINIMALIST 3L Life | Living w/ Just a BUM BAG! kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6HHk3xoqZhop7M

I dropped my extreme minimalist channel because I got tired of people getting nasty. Maybe I'll start again, but not for now.

I hypotheses that it might be the reason many people drop an extreme minimalist channel.( Nasty, hate comments). It’s odd that it sparks some kind of competitive mindset in many viewers. Or that they think the video creator is doing it to be competitive. When often many extreme minimalists are very mindful. They just simply have an ‘extreme’ low amount of possessions because they don’t care about stuff. But others seem to think it’s an ostentatious show don’t they? When you’re just simply showing your life and lifestyle or saying how it’s helped you. The commenters don’t have to be all defensive and think it’s about them? Or that all extreme minimalists are judging others who aren’t minimalists or as extreme as them. The human mind is a strange place at times 😂 🧘

@@SagelifeMinimalism I had a similar reaction to people in my life finding out I was vegan (am not currently). Usually they'd find out when we went out to eat, as I never told anyone unprompted/unasked. They'd start in a position of bafflement (like many people I see in your comments) and then turn nasty and defensive, as if through my life choices I was condemning theirs. They would demand to know my reasons, seemingly just so they could argue them with me. But I just didn't care to fight about my private choice. So I think you're really right in your point here.

It’s bewildering isn’t it 😊 Like ‘I haven’t questioned you about your life choices’ 🤷‍♀️ 😂 It sort of proves it’s a defensive strategy really doesn’t it 😊 You know what they say - attack is the best form of defence 🤦‍♀️

Good point. I’m unsure of your angle though 🤔 as many people wear uniforms for work that are required because of the line of work. Therefore it’s sort of decided for them by their job role.
