I was a little kid when this hit the charts and I *loved* it, it was so catchy. They were one of my favorite bands. I also still remember asking my Dad what a "centerfold" was, too. :) To his credit, he managed to keep a straight face and explain "When making magazines, they fold the paper, so that the center of the magazine is the centerfold... and... uh... well... some grown-up magazines have pictures of women in that centerfold." Miss you, Dad!! ❤

Gold star to Jay! Yep, this is about a man who, as a teenager, had a massive crush on a girl in his homeroom, a girl who was so perfect, sweet, and pure, he thought of her as angelic, and he felt he couldn't touch such a wholesome, innocent girl. She stayed that way in his head...until he saw her in that girly magazine. At first he's upset and confused, then comes the lyric, "Oh no, I can't deny it, oh yeah, I guess I gotta buy it (the magazine)". Now he's going to track her down, admit his crush, and take a shot with her.

@@pauld6967 Someday I'll tell you guys about the day my mom suddenly decided we needed to flip the mattress on my bed. Unfortunately, I had 3 Playboy Magazines stuffed between the mattress and the box spring, and there was no time to transfer them somewhere else in my room, so with her on one side of the bed, and me on the other, I preemptively flipped my end up first, so that her edge of my mattress slid along the top of the box spring towards me. So then I grabbed hold of the magazines & carefully maneuvered them across the top of the box spring, making sure the tilted mattress blocked her view. I'm telling you, that was a close one !! It was a maneuver you'd think you would only see in a movie.

This is one of four standout songs by JGB. The other three are "Love Stinks" (funny but kind of not, especially viewed through the lens of adolescence), "Freeze Frame" (a banger with a hook every bit as big as the "na na's" in this one), and "Piss On The Wall" (angry and sullen, again made more poignant through the lens of adolescence). JGB's entire catalog is criminally underrated, though, imho.

Don't worry Amber, We love you anyway...Sometimes you just gotta have fun with a song and just vibe. It doesn't matter what it's about when the beat is that fun.

Glad you guys found out about this band. They were always fun to listen to back in the day. I didn't know one HS or college party in the late 70s & early 80s that were not spinning a record from this band. They were a blues/rock band through the 70s with a lot of soulful covers they did until they hit it big with their last two albums. Then the lead vocalist, Peter Wolf, went solo after that. His solo stuff is pretty good too.

My step brother Roy had somewhat the experience related in this song. Before he went to Vietnam in 1970,he was dating a young lady who had a tween-age sister who he never really thought much of.But in the summer of 1978 he opened up the latest Playboy magazine, turned to the centerfold and THERE SHE WAS (Janet Quist)!

I know people will want you to listen to Freeze Frame and Love Stinks, but the live version of Musta Got Lost w/intro is worth it for the intro alone. The song is also pretty good. 👍

I loved playing this in my bands because people immediately started dancing, J Geils is the Guitar player an lived a couple towns over from me here in Massachusettes and met him on a few occasions, The Lead singer is Peter Wolf. After the band broke up J Geils and the Horn Player Magic Dick, I swear that is his stage name, had a band called Blues Time. Oh and he comes right out and sings the Lyrics "One day I'm looking thru a GIRLY Magazine and there's my homeroom angle on the pages inbetween". They are also the Band playing in Adam Sandlers Back Yard party in Grown Ups 2

I came of age during the late 60's & early 70's. As such I got to see live some of the greatest bands of that era. J Geils was one of the two best bands to see in concert (circa '72 - at their peak). They absolutely tore the place down. They were a WILD bar band like the Doobie Brothers, just off the dial. You can't image what a Hammond driving Leslie cabs sounds like live. You have to listen to "Whammer Jammer" (a killer blues harp song). See if there's a live performance of it somewhere on the interwebz.

Floyd's Motel, First I Look At the Purse, Whammer Jammer. I saw these guys live twice and I can tell you the show was electric. They always had the audience going. I regret you won't have that opportunity since J. Geils died recently.

You've got to do their song off their Live album, "Musta Got Lost"! "Hold on this song has a little introduction to it It ain't supposed to be sad though you might feel it that way It's a song about desperation, Every now and then we do get desperate This is a song about L-O-V-E, And if you abuse it you're gonna lose it And if you lose it..."

Great reaction. I was eleven when this song came out so just starting to get my first crushes and forming my own ideas about music outside of that from my parents. Loved this song back then and always reminds me of that time.

This song got played so much on radio back in the day we began to hate that little hook. J Geils has some great stuff. FYI: The lead singer, Peter Wolf, was married to actress Faye Dunaway in the 70s.
