I also still remember asking my Dad what a "centerfold" was, too. :) To his credit, he managed to keep a straight face and explain "When making magazines, they fold the paper, so that the center of the magazine is the centerfold... and... uh... well... some grown-up magazines have pictures of women in that centerfold." Miss you, Dad!! ❤

Gold star to Jay! Yep, this is about a man who, as a teenager, had a massive crush on a girl in his homeroom, a girl who was so perfect, sweet, and pure, he thought of her as angelic, and he felt he couldn't touch such a wholesome, innocent girl. She stayed that way in his head...until he saw her in that girly magazine. At first he's upset and confused, then comes the lyric, "Oh no, I can't deny it, oh yeah, I guess I gotta buy it (the magazine)". Now he's going to track her down, admit his crush, and take a shot with her.

So then I grabbed hold of the magazines & carefully maneuvered them across the top of the box spring, making sure the tilted mattress blocked her view. I'm telling you, that was a close one !! This is one of four standout songs by JGB. The other three are "Love Stinks" (funny but kind of not, especially viewed through the lens of adolescence), "Freeze Frame" (a banger with a hook every bit as big as the "na na's" in this one), and "Piss On The Wall" (angry and sullen, again made more poignant through the lens of adolescence). JGB's entire catalog is criminally underrated, though, imho.

Great reaction. I was eleven when this song came out so just starting to get my first crushes and forming my own ideas about music outside of that from my parents. Loved this song back then and always reminds me of that time.

This song got played so much on radio back in the day we began to hate that little hook. J Geils has some great stuff. FYI: The lead singer, Peter Wolf, was married to actress Faye Dunaway in the 70s.
