So back in '92 my late father insisted we get a Sega Megadrive for Christmas, I personally wanted a Super Nintendo. The reason why he wanted to get a Sega Megadrive was Dad loved Super Hang On so it was one of the games I got with my Sega Megadrive for Christmas '92. At the time I hated it and thought it was boring. I now played this game regularly and appreciate it and has probably become one of my favourite, most played games. It is nostalgia or fond Christmas memories when my Dad was alive and watching my dad play it, I don't know. Miss you Dad 😥

My father also insisted we get a Mega Drive, while I preferred a SNES. However I pretty much loved Super Hang-On and I loved to see him play it as well. When playing the Original mode I imagined him being my mechanic. Meanwhile he also passed away. A couple of years ago I started developing my own game, based on Turbo Outrun with a bit of Super Hang-On in it. You can repair and upgrade your car in between the races, just like in Super Hang-On. And guess what? My father is the mechanic.

@@Sk1ds87 How cool is that. Thats awesome. I did something similar. When I was waiting for Christmas 92 to hurry up so I could get my hands on my MD I remember telling my dad of a track I heard from a band called After The Fire called Joy and I said to him how cool it would be if that song was in Super Hang On and he just laughed and said it would be cool. Well thanks to something called MSU-MD I requested Super Hang On be converted so I could manually add this track to the game and so I have version of the game called Super Hang On Dad edition.

@@NB-1 Thankyou very much for that breakdown. That helps explain much about how the SNK devs were still able to wring some impressive scenes out of NG a decade after its release, I always suspected that the x68000 was superior in hardware but never really knew the differences. Seems like the NG is more of a brute force approach. I remember having a discussion with a developer who ported his games to systems like the amiga and genesis. And I asked him if the access to larger video ram of the amiga gave it any advantage, and he basically said it really didn't since data needed to be preloaded from disks. But it was simply different, in that yeah he could have more complex dynamic scenes but lacked the space of having a rom. And he lamented that even the 2 mb of the A1200 and the AGA was still no match for the Genesis or SNES rom a standpoint what could be done in a purely subjective graphical impression point of view. Since the consoles actually did have horsepower that the Amiga simply lacked where it needed it. Even though he said the amiga arc was very elegant and effecient, it took a lot of effort to get it to compete.

I was stationed in Okinawa in 1990 and flew over to the mainland to visit my mom, who was visiting with her mom, my grandma, and family. My uncle bought me a Mega Drive and I went to the BX at the airbase nearby and bought a Genesis Super Hang On. The damn Mega Drive translated the game into Japanese! I had to have my mom translate what was shown on the screen in order to choose options. Wasn't easy as I have an old school mom. She was old back then, and even older today (92 y.o.). But I have fond memories of my one and only time I got to visit my mom's side of the family in Japan, and playing this game with my cousin at Obachan's house.

The 3DS is my favorite port here, with X68000 coming in close second. X68000 loses a little graphically but it still has that sensation of speed from the arcade. Amiga's isn't too bad either. While Mega Drive's version looks OK, it feels a bit slow compared to the arcade... unless you're playing it on a 10 MHz overclocked system.

The Mega Drive version is amazing when you consider that: 1) It's basically a cut down System 16 arcade board (the original arcade version being on one of Sega's Super Scaler boards) and... 2) ...It's a very early game on the system. The speed of the Sharp version is impressive, though it should be remembered that even the base versions of the Sharp were significantly more powerful than the Mega Drive.

Objectively, I'd say that the best ones here (besides the arcade version) are Amiga, Atari ST, and Sega Genesis, but I find myself most liking the DOS and Mac versions because of their art styles that made the most of those machines' more limited graphics capabilities at the time. And I spent tons of time on those old Macs that had just b/w graphics (not even grayscale, they had to use dithering to simulate grays), so that Mac version pulls on my heart strings I think. lol

Why is the turning so slow? It made it nearly unplayable for me. Once I played the GBA version, I was HOOKED. It was easily my fave on the collection next to Outrun. The GBA version controlled like a dream, and was super fast! ALSO! GP Rider on Game Gear is a damn good port of Super Hang-On, and better than the Genesis port by far. Bit sad that the Amstrad version is just a lazy Speccy port, but shocked at how well the Speccy can pull the game off. The Amiga version seems like it plays better than the later Genesis version too.

OMG! I just wanted to know how they managed to make such a horribly poorly made, ugly and totally unplayable version as the C64? And how did they manage to put the main elements and almost all of the existing arcade gameplay on Speccy's modest hardware??!!

Also the ZX spectrum and Mac ports are shit how do did people enjoy playing games the graphics are shit on the zzz spectrum it’s like they used a highlighter for the colors and did a shitty job of highlighting the right spots also on Mac how do you play games in B/W I mean it was the 80s and 90s why didn’t it have color it’s not like it’s cheap like the game boy
@paulspencer64773 жыл бұрын
They made a decent version on the ZX Spectrum within the limitations of the hardware. The colours were what was available so if you take all that into consideration, it's a good conversion!
