This is a way to add a few more vital DBs to your music without comprising the dynamics.
Add a clipper before the limiter and with some of the peaks out of the way, you'll be able to add a few more DBs of level.
My favourite way to do this is with the Ozone Maximiser as it has a clipper built in.
Check the link in my bio if you want to know how to master using Ozone 10.

Oh i didnt know the clipper was before the limiter. I really wish the clipper module was positioned on the left on the limiter so it visually looks like it’s before it, might help others understand signal better🙂

These days I use a clipper, not only for this, but for alot of the bus track or even individual track dynamics control that alot of people would tell you to use a compressor for. Clippers are the best.

A very important tip to get at loudnesses like -5 like carpenter brut, if you're into that lol, is to mimic the loudness changes by using filters. This means for example, high transient has more highs shortly and then not anymore. If you compress and they get lengthened, shorten them up to be able to go louder. Or if you want to do a part that "seems" quieter, do that by using a highpass and a lowpass (emulating if you were lowering the volume on a speaker).

I like to use master plan and get real close to where I'm alst finished then shape it a bit and get a little more loudness using fab filter limiter with the delta setting on and checking the best settings for it. Depending on the song/genre I'll get louder or more dynamic

I'm making Psytrance and the kick and bass are always flat and the loudest part of the track. I can clip a few transients but if I hit the kick then it distorts terribly, so it's really difficult to master and make louder. The solution is to clip everything in the mix, group things and limit them, then you can EQ and add you mastering magic but no compression and only one limiter to bring the volume up. I set my kick to -6 and mix into a limiter at -6. So I can tell if something is too loud

Honestly what I found works just fine is not trying to push for maximum loudness anyway, most of the peaks are from the kick drum anyway, and doesn’t have much to do with perceived loudness. Getting your song sounding good just by messing with gain/compression with a little makeup gain and saturation is plenty if you can do it right I think

I’d like to know if sound engineers are able to not make every track as loud as possible these days? Music used to have a more ‘natural’ quality where different tracks sat at different levels instead of being boosted to their maximum before interfering with something else. It’s almost like engineers look more at the graphical output of their daws than listen to the sound

Tell me about it! The answer is the producer and musicians have the final say. Or rather whoever is cutting the checks... could be the record label that wants loudness.

I'm finishing my own EP (hip hop genre), I could go super loud, but I chose to master softer. Max LUFS I got was -11.8, the quiter one is mastered at -13.2, just above the -14 requested by the majority of the platforms. I don't ger mastering higher, I mean if I want the sound of a specific limiter that makes more sense, but at the cost of the dynamics...

There are few certainly sounds that handle clipping better than others and mixes that allow more or less clipping. A good starting point is Baphometrix’s clip to zero method, where you do the clippign from the individual tracks allowing you to decide how much clipping each track can take, that way you have a more controlled and consistent crest factor on the master bus, allowing you to have the final clipper only have to deal with the tiniest amount of peaks, because the rest is already taken care of

Oh the irony. Many tell people to "control peaks with compression" which of course does not really clips them - and you look confused and you think you are a bad engineer. So to clip peaks you need a clipper. BTW, some other mastering engineer uses some tape plugin to achieve this peak clipping before limiting.

@@123ATank Yeah, naturally good or naturally bad... Slight difference. Definitively a deal breaker in music biz. Singing classes and ear trainings are used to be the only recipe for singer wannabes.... Before autotune and "modern" music producers made good looking or rich bad singers famous. It's your choice of course but naturally bad results are no excuse for not cheating. My 2 cents.... Wish you well!
