lazy_texture_replace isn't the devs saying that the method was lazy as you described it. 'lazy loading' is a common development term used when assets are loaded only when they are requested. Because they haven't altered the ROMs the emulator is 'lazily' swapping out the textures when they are requested by the game. It's still pretty funny considering the half arsed job they did.

making sunshine run at 60 fps instead of 30 isn't that easy. assuming that the game's speed is tied to the framerate, a common practice for older games back then (and uh Bethesda today lol) upping it to 60 would likely cause the game logic that's tied to the framerate to play out twice as fast/twice as soon. working around this requires a bit more code than just "replacing a few lines of code". the decompilation project of super mario 64 for an example went through a bit of a hurdle to support 60 fps, and even then it's all interpolated (game logic is still running at 30 fps) which is in my opinion a lazy implementation. there's no improvement to the controller input delay this way.

In regards to the SMSunshine only being 30fps, I feel like "flipping the switch" between 30 and 60 frames isnt the quick solution everyone thinks it is: when Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 released for PS4 boasting the new 60fps framerate, it became apparent all Square Eniix did was just "flip the switch" and the 60fps came with a lovely set of new problems; a number of things ended up functioning FAR TOO FAST to be reasonable, and players had to discover these problems during their initial playthroughs for it to reach Square Enix' attention, and a patch had to be made to ACTUALLY ACCOMMODATE THE CHANGE OF FRAMERATES. there is some misinformation in this, when you boot up PAL super mario sunshine, it asks if you want to run it at 60HZ, if you chose yes, it runs at 30fps. Many games from that era did that too. Also sunshine is straight up emulated so its more demanding than galaxy, which runs in weird half-emulation half-native way. galaxy, unlike sunshine in this collection, run with variable resolution so its not 1080p all the time and lowers resolution when the system cant keep up.

Seing how finicky sunshine emulation, especially polution maps etc is, and how messy the games code is, it make a lot of sence that they where both being cautious about changing it or massively making changes and debugging the framerate. These are really great for VR, they replicate the charm of looking at a model train set, and since you're so far away, the assets can be much lower-fidelity, so it help with lightening up the processing load. It's immensely disappointing. All 3 games suffer from issues with the controls. The uninverted camera in 64 and Sunshine as he and his french buddy mentioned, but also completely and unnecessarily reconfiguring Sunshine's control scheme outside of what was necessary to get FLUDD working properly. Sunshine also lacks GameCube controller support despite the switch having an adapter allowing them to do that. They also removed left handed pointer options from Galaxy. (the Wiimote and Nunchuk weren't designed for any specific hand to hold so lefties could use the pointer with their dominant hand just as easily as righties could, but now the pointer is mapped exclusively to the right joy-con's gyro and the pro controller's gyro despite the left joy-con also having gyro.) As they pointed out, it's just standard roms with some upscaled textures. 3D All Stars has inferior versions of each game in the collection and is overall an incredibly disappointing product. Not sure if you're joking, but "lazy" actually refers to replacing the textures at runtime. "Lazy" is often used in programming to refer to things that are loaded only when asked for by whatever workflow requires them.

The issue with unlocking sunshine is that frame timers will be off. Some objects in the game use the framerate for timing, you can even see this effect when you emulate sunshine in 60 fps. Some things will be 2x faster than they should be in terms of executing code

Wow, this game is underrated. A. It's actually decently priced, in my opinion. B. It's accessible. C. It's a way to have a new generation access to the classics, like myself. It may be a little more expensive in America or outside my area, but it is way too overhated. I wish YT Comments showed dislikes.

@christopherl.10724 жыл бұрын
Nevermind, i think i found it: lazy loading: is a design pattern commonly used in computer programming to defer initialization of an object until the point at which it is needed. (source wikipedia)
@BlueSparxLPs4 жыл бұрын
@@christopherl.1072 More specifically, it's short for "Lazy Loading." Here's an excerpt from TechTerms that might help: "Lazy loading is a programming technique that delays loading resources until they are needed. A common example is a webpage that defers loading images until the user scrolls to their location within the page. Lazy loading is used on the web and in software programs, such as mobile and desktop applications ... While lazy loading has become increasingly popular on the web, it has been used in software development for a long time. For example, an operating system may only display thumbnail images for the visible icons in a folder. Similarly, an image viewing program may only load the visible images in a photo library. This uses less memory and improves application performance because the program does not load unnecessary data." Tl;dr: it's a memory saving technique that provides a performance boost.

They probably WERENT confident they could run Sunshine on the switch at 60fps. The reason why Galaxy runs as well as it does is because it's not emulated. Even I have my doubts the Switch version would be able to run GameCube games at 60fps without troubles.

I do wish Nintendo would've put more effort into making the Graphics better, and the inverted camera controls was just dumb. But, I eventually got used to the camera controls after about 2 days, and it's still really fun to be able to play all three of these games on the Switch. And I can't really play Sunshine otherwise, since my computer is kinda slow and I couldn't get Dolphin to work properly.

@kirbythekirb594 жыл бұрын
Fan of 8 bites Fan of 8 bites team kirby is based on the star allies engine, so it's not a port, same thing with kirby fighter 2. Shantae was not made by nintendo. Mario maker was a wii u game and 2 is most likely based on that, same thing with hyrule warriors, even if that wasn't made by nintendo too. Don't get what you mean with the mario kart series, cause wile there was a title for 3ds, 8 isn't a port of it

0:35 You were asking why? Well, because it was Nintendo who first invented a so-wrongly-called "Skyrim re-resell scheme" - they were selling their games again and again and again for each new platform. But! As they are making Switch into a line of future consoles they need another way to re-sell their old games - thus "limited time offer". I bet it will be selling again in the future.

FPS can sometimes be tied to physics engines so it's possible they only bumped the frame rate up to 30fps so the physics engine of the game didn't have any issues.

I hope we get a reimagining of Zelda 1 and 2 at some point. 2 is criminally underrated due to fans of the series thinking of it as "bad" just because it doesn't follow the Zelda formula, even though it was only the second in the series so there wasn't a formula yet. And people didn't like formulaic sequels in the 80's, so it wouldn't have sold as well as it did if it was just more of Zelda 1. Plus it actually was pretty well received at the time, with most of the dislike coming from younger fans who were introduced to the series through A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time.

While I would've loved that Super Mario Sunshine ran at 60FPS, I believe the Switch wouldn't really handle it smoothly. The game already suffers from random hiccups in Delfino Plaza and sometimes in other places too. I guess it has to do with the game being emulated instead of being half-native, half-emulated like in Galaxy. Anyway, really informative video, dude! I really like the way you speak and how you give your opinions on them as well.
