Crusty as they may have been, they’re leaps and bounds more robust and developed than any game you’d see released as-is nowadays. But that point aside, they were truly revolutionary. The first forays into their respective 3D space. And I honestly think they’re among the best of their series. Mario 64 nails the HUB and wonder of the castle, its paintings and their worlds. And the snadbox-esque nature of the stars that isn’t as big and loose as Odyssey. But also not as strict as Sunshine. Also Mario’s moveset in 64 is among my favorites. Sonic Adventure was imo way ahead of anything at the time. And I don’t think a single 3D Sonic game after really nails the controls as well for Sonic and friends. The music is really diverse, and the Adventure fields are such a nice way to play around with character moves and understanding how to execute with the controls. In both cases, I can definitely see that a lot of care went into crafting the experience. From how the character should control, to the world they should interact with. It just feels so natural.

Imo, Adventure holds up better than 64, but 64 is still more important for being so revolutionary and working with worse hardware. Adventure is still a landmark title; coming out the same year as OOT while nailing a formula Sega still has trouble with to this is nothing short of amazing. But I do think coming out three years after 64 and on better hardware gives it an inherent edge that makes 64 more impressive

Here is the thing. Sonic Adventure's problems are due to it being rushed. Even in 1999 it was painfully obvious how little time Sega spent making Sonic Adventure. Sega games in general seem like great ideas the company just decided to rush. Sonic R could of been better than Mario Kart if Sega didnt do their typical 8 months of development rubbish

The problem with comparing Sonic Adventure to Mario 64 is that Sonic Adventure came out when *superior* 3D games were already out on N64. In September 1999, Zelda Ocarina was out for over a year and Sonic Adventure is laughable compared to that game. *Sega chose to rush Sonic Adventure and every Sonic game*

Instead, Sonic Team switched to Dreamcast hardware in March 1998 and scrapped almost everything they did on Saturn. Basically starting from scratch. In the end, Sega was selling a big 3D Sonic game made in 10 months. Rushed. Not because its,1998/1999. Because Sega rushed Sonic Adventure like every other Sonic game. Stick with N64 or wait for Playstation 2 was what gamers did. And Sega kept putting more rushed games on Dreamcast

In September 1999, we were used to getting platformers with decent controls. Sonic Adventure was just another rushed Sonic game. There is NO EXCUSE for Sonic Adventure's mediocre state so late in 1999 when Nintendo had been getting so many good 3D games. And thats the problem with Sega Dreamcast. Other than graphics, the general public considered these games unimpressive. And yet Playstation 2 amazed gamers before it even released
