Fun Fact: Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn't a Mario game. In Japan, it was called Doki Doki Panic which was the same as SMB 2 just with different main character sprites and some of the power ups and different textures. Other than that, it was pretty much the exact same game. The original Super Mario Bros. 2 was released only in Japan. Since Nintendo thought the game was "too hard for Americans", we instead got a re-skin of Doki Doki Panic. Us 'Muricans know Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japenese version) as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.

Eh, I'll take Doki Doki panic over the "real" Super Mario Bros. 2, anyway. The Lost Levels feels more like a rom-hack than a sequel, and it feels like the developers built the game to be punishing rather than challenging. A lot of the flow from the original game's superb level design is gone because of this, too. Also, the funny thing about Doki Doki panic was that the game began development as a Super Mario Bros. sequel with an emphasis on vertical platforming, but Nintendo eventually changed the project into Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic when they got the rights to use the Dream Factory characters.

Though I agree, this game wasn't really a risk...this game is a clone of 'Doki Doki Panic!' used as a replacement for the real "Super Mario Bros 2.", which Nintendo felt was too difficult of a game for gamer's outside of Japan to grasp. Zelda 2 is a different story, even then I wouldn't call it a "risk" as the series hadn't really had set 'rules' that it needed to follow. like they feel it does today.

It captures the essence and atmosphere of the Mario games. The in-game versions are more instrumental and electronic, but this cover gives a larger-than-life, orchestral, even tropical vibe to the song which more reflects the aesthetic of the game.
