I would love to see a technical breakdown of what's being done behind the scenes here, what sprites can be changed and which can't. Because if I'm right, physics for Lakitu and the Hammer Bros. are stored and managed differently than Goombas, Koopas, Buzzy Beetles, etc. Any chance we might be able to get a vid like that, really drilling deep into how this works on an ASM level?

Hey Endy. It's actually quite simple in the way it works (if you know much about hacking binary files). All it does is write new values to specific offsets in the rom, which causes the game to glitch out and behave differently to how it normally would. For example, changing 0x04910 to the value 0xED would cause every enemy to throw hammers just like the hammer bros. It can't just write any old value though, because that can cause the game to become unplayable, so there's a set list of valid values and it just picks them out by random. But yeah, there's no black magic or anything here. It's just "Take me to this part of the rom and set this value". You're actually right about the Lakitu, Bowser, and Hammer Bros physics in a way. Only ground sprites that have a constant x velocity are affected by the changes unfortunately, which is why the mushrooms behaviour changes also. There are probably ways to modify the behaviour of others, but I haven't quite worked that part out yet.

The Goombas Are Doing A a little jig! the ones that turn into koopas are actually koopas going to a costume party, and the crushed ones are ducking! the changing color koopa's are two koopas, getting infront of each other, trying to protect eachother. the glitching flying koopas...are zombies in disguise. the mushrooms are tired of mario, trying to move away, and the fireballs are like that, because -mario- Darby has gained the power to control fire...AND MAKE IT RAIN FLAMES!!!
