I don't mind this movie. Not great, but it has a spot in my heart. I saw it in the theatre for a friend's 7th birthday party. All everyone was excited for was seeing Yoshi, and I ended up falling asleep during that part. I remember leaving the theatre thinking the fungus turning out to be the transformed king was really clever, and I still do actually. It was a nice use of material from Mario 3, and it upped the threat, made it a "mystery", and adapted it well to live action. Also, I think the dinosaur theme was in there because they were pushing Super Mario World so hard at the time. But you didn't mention the other cliff hanger: Where Nintendo CEOs come to offer two of the characters their very own movie....

If I had directed Super Mario Brothers, aside from making it, you know actually more like the game, I would have had to have this scene: Mario, Luigi, and Daisy together at a restaurant having dinner: Daisy: "So, Mario, do you have anyone special in your life, well besides Luigi." Mario: "Nah, not really" Luigi: "What about Pauline?" Mario: "You know we're not together anymore." Luigi: "But you really liked her!" Mario: "I don't want to talk about it, we're through." I really want to address this: I downright DESPISE when they call him King Koopa. It's not as memorable a name nor as frightening as Bowser. That's a fitting name for an imposing villain. I know in Japan he's King Koopa, but I grew up hearing his name be Bowser, so that's what stuck to me.

The best Mario Bros. movie was a Japanime where Mario wants to rescue Toadstool from a forceful marriage to Bowser. Luigi just wants gold. What's funny is watching Bowser being in denial that Toadstool doesn't reciprocate his feelings. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't remember what it was called. The ending is typical of how Toadstool treats Mario.

I love this movie. So good. Definitely not a faithful adaptation, but extremely enjoyable. Plus, it just becomes fun to look for all of the references. The characters are hilarious, and who could forget the elevator scene? I'm sure there's a nostalgia bias here. I saw the movie in theaters, around the time I was in kindergarten. So the fact that it didn't follow the games that well didn't really bug me at the time.
@hotbeerjosh90198 жыл бұрын
I could see this being entertaining to a 5 or 6 year old boy at that time. I was 14 when it came out and it was a disappointment. I think they should have went a totally different route. Re watching it for me just reminds of how bad it was. Nintendo has had a lot of success with doing things wrong.
@Lone4323458 жыл бұрын
Frankly i don't know who you would make a faithful live action adaptation in the 90's. Doing whole CGI environment just wasn't possible yet. Even then the Mario Games have mostly been light on Story. Especially back then. So i don't know where else they could have gone with it in Live Action. Even then Animation seems more like fit for Mario. I mean i think theirs a reason nobody attempted a Live Action Sonic movie. Just think of the poor bastard that would have to wear a Hedgehog outfit.

The plot follows "Mario Bros." far more faithfully than the more popular NES sequel that actually lent the film it's name. "Mario and Luigi are two Italian American plumber brothers from Brooklyn who notice strange creatures, Koopas, crabs and other such lifeforms are infesting the sewers of New York and messing with the plumbing, they proceed below to clean the sewers up".... Main setup of this Movie, and also the Synopsis of the early 80's Arcade Game.

Wasn't the weird clash because the directors basically filled their own movie (a blade runner ripoff), ignoring anything Mario brothers, and the producers, with no budget left had to cut together something with what was already there?
@colliric8 жыл бұрын
No, it's because the screenplay was in fact based on the 1983 arcade game which was vastly different to it's "Super" sequel. The screenwriter for whatever reason(mostly because Supershow adapted it too) felt that the original Mario game's canon needed to be adapted as officially a storyline part of the series. That's why we ended up with a film set in the sewer system of New York, about Mario and Luigi descending into the sewers of NYC to fight Koopas and finding an alternate dimension called the Mushroom Kingdom in the sewers of NYC. Plus "Mario Mario" and "Luigi Mario".... Let's face it, Nintendo should have told the film-makers "You know you should do it purely as an adaptation of the sequel, and the sequel's sequels. Don't fret too much about the original original game and it's story. 'Super Mario Bros.' was a reboot anyway in hindsight".... but they didn't.

Jurassic Park is definitely the answer here. I saw Mario Brothers in the theater when I was younger and I really did like it. Unfortunately, I later watched Jurassic Park and almost forgot about the Mario Brothers movie until many years later as people started bringing it up online. Jurassic Park just blew everything else that year out of the water. 1993 was a great year for movies, too. Some instant classics came out that year, and Mario Brothers just didn't have a chance other than being remembered for its inability to live up to the video game. Hell, just look up "1993 movies". Groundhog Day (yes it's that new, I forgot!), Schindler's List, A Nightmare Before Christmas, The Fugitive, the underrated "Falling Down", and one of my personal favorites, Demolition Man all came out the same year as Mario Brothers.

For me the disappointment was the other way around. I saw the film back in the day (thoroughly enjoyed it then) before I had even played a Mario game. We had Sega and Amiga systems. When I finally did get a chance to play Super Mario World on a friends SNES, I was like WTF is this? I found it slow, cartoony and graphically bland compared to the gritty style of the film (and what I was playing on my Mega Drive and A500). Only in recent years have I given Mario another chance and appreciated the series more and how far off the film was. Anyway, great review and a film I really must revisit.
